Contemp Review: The Wanderer (Thunder Point) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "The Wanderer" the 1st book in her Thunder Point series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

From Robyn Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Virgin River novels, comes Thunder Point — the highly anticipated new series that will make you laugh, make you sigh, and make you fall in love with a small town filled with people you'll never forget.

Nestled on the Oregon coast is a small town of rocky beaches and rugged charm. Locals love the land's unspoiled beauty. Developers see it as a potential gold mine. When newcomer Hank Cooper learns he's been left an old friend's entire beachfront property, he finds himself with a community's destiny in his hands.

Cooper has never been a man to settle in one place, and Thunder Point was supposed to be just another quick stop. But Cooper finds himself getting involved with the town. And with Sarah Dupre, a woman as complicated as she is beautiful.

With the whole town watching for his next move, Cooper has to choose between his old life and a place full of new possibilities. A place that just might be home.

My Review:

Hank Cooper has rolled into the quiet town of Thunder Point with his fifth wheel toy hauler after getting a phone call about his buddy Ben has died.  He wants to get to the bottom of the mystery after hearing Ben has died mysteriously.  He is informed that Ben has left him his bar/bait shop which is in bad shape and 200 acres of prime beachfront property.

Sarah Dupre is a U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter pilot who has raised her younger brother since her early twenties.  She has recently been through a nasty divorce which has strongly affected her and her brother.

Every character is fully developed and well written.  Real life issues are addressed (teen-age romance, drug use, bullying, being a single parent raising children/teen-agers).

Contemp Review: The Wedding Party [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "The Wedding Party" by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

After her divorce, Charlene Dugan vowed never to get married again — a promise she has kept for twenty-five years. Until the fateful day she finds herself uttering the well-known phrase — "Let's get married!"

Almost immediately, Charlene's seemingly perfect life begins unraveling at the seams. Daughter Stephanie's own relationship is about to disintegrate, and she might be just a teensy-weensy bit jealous of her mom. And Charlene seems to be spending more time with her ex-husband than with her fiancé, Dennis. What's more confusing is that Dennis doesn't seem to mind too much. In fact, he sees the wedding consultant more often than Charlene does.

The wedding party is now officially out of control. They're calling for rain and the bride has cold feet. This isn't exactly what Charlene had in mind. But maybe it's not too late to finally decide on who and what she really wants.

My Review:

Charlene Dugan is determined never to get married again after her disastrous marriage/divorce which she has kept for twenty-five years.  Then she utters the words "let's get married" to her new boyfriend Dennis.

Her daughter Stephanie's relationship with her boyfriend Grant seems to be on the verge of disintegration and she is jealous of her mom.  She wants to move back home which Charlie isn't too keen about.  Charlie is spending more time with her ex-husband Jake then Dennis her fiancee.  Dennis sees the wedding consultant more than her.

I didn't really like this cheating thing - Dennis didn't break up with Charlie before getting involved with the wedding consultant (Charlie caught them) and Charlie didn't break up with Dennis before falling into bed again with Jake.

My Review:

Nikki Burgess was in a horrible marriage and an even worst divorce.  She's just about to give up on finding happiness when he ex-husband suddenly dies and she gets custody of her kids.  She gets a chance to start over again.

Dixie McPherson has known a lot of love and she has the mementos to back it up - eleven tennis bracelets, tons of trinkets, piles of sexy lingerie and a bad reputation.  All she wanted was to find true love, get married and have a family.

Carlisle Bartlett is a very likeable, kindhearted, loyal and funny loving guy that makes drinks at the back of an airplane.  He is hiding a terrible secret and the only relationship/love he finds is ones that leave him battered and bruised.

Then Nikki, Dixie and Carlisle are given a chance to start over at a new airline in Las Vegas and they don't hesitate to join.

This was an interesting read because of three different story lines and how they are intertwined with each other.  You really feel for Dixie and Carlisle because of the abuse and stuff both had to put up with.  You feel very sorry for Nikki with her situation her ex-husband put her in.

My Review:

Katie Malone is a single mother of twin 5 year old sons Andy and Mitch.  She quit her job after she was rejected by her boss who she found out is gay.  She decides to drive to Virgin River from Vermont to spend the summer with her brother Connor and Leslie the woman who fell in love with in Hidden Point.

Along the way her van has a flat when Dylan Childress and his biker buddies help her.  They part ways and figure out they are both headed out to Virgin River and Dylan stills longer.  She recognizes Dylan has a former child star who she had a giant crush on but doesn't let on she knows who he is.

Dylan Childress is a former child star who disappeared from TV land when Adele his grandmother took him away from Hollywood to live with her.  He was a wild and troubled child whose best friend died at 15 from a drug overdose and this opened his eyes to what could happen when you party too much.  He learned that he could be a normal person away from his mother and step siblings.  He now owns an air transport business in Montana but is living in an RV for the summer.

Katie and Dylan are attracted to one another but are afraid to have a deeper relationship because Katie's sons are her first priority and Dylan believes he's not relationship worthy because of his childhood and family.  They decide to have a summer fling but along the way they both fall in love with one another.  Dylan leaves to go back to his business in Montana but realizes that he can't leave Katie and her sons who adore him.  Katie meanwhile finds out she is pregnant and decides to keep the baby.

This book had some great characters with an interesting romance and was nicely paced.  Glad to see that Katie and Dylan got to know each other before falling into bed and that her sons were her number one priority.

Contemp Review: Hidden Summit (Virgin River) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Hidden Summit" the 14th book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

Sick of running into her cheery ex-husband and his new wife, Leslie Petruso accepts a job at the Virgin River branch of Haggerty Construction and takes the high road right out of town. Now she's got Paul Haggerty's business running like a well-oiled machine. In fact, things are so busy Paul jumps at the chance to hire an extra set of hands.

Just like Leslie, Conner Danson has been burned by love. But if Leslie was disappointed by her relationship going bad, Conner was decimated. He's got no time for women … although he spends an awful lot of time pretending not to notice Leslie. And she's pretty busy "ignoring" the chemistry between them.

According to Conner and Leslie, they have only one thing in common — they're done with love. But everyone in Virgin River can see that things are heating up at Haggerty Construction. And as far as Paul Haggerty can tell, the best thing he can do is hang on to his hard hat and watch the sparks fly!

My Review:

Leslie Petruso has moved to Virgin River to get away from her cheating ex-husband and his new pregnant wife.  His happiness at having a child with his new wife gets to her because he never wanted one with her.  He has changed and wants to be friends and still take care of her but she's had enough of his stalking and accepts a job at Haggerty Construction as an office manager.

Connor Danson (aka Danson Connor) has had a horrible marriage but has a bigger problem.  He's the only witness of a murder in Sacramento and his hardware store is burnt to the ground.  He's gone into witness protection and they have sent him to Virgin River to work at Haggerty Construction.

The chemistry between Leslie and Connor was hot and I really enjoyed the dialogue between them - it was hilarious and fun.

It was great to visit old friends and it was a delight to see Brie taking a more active role in this book.

My Review:

Becky Timm needs to get over her old boyfriend Denny before she can decide to marry her current one.  Three years ago Denny broke her heart when he broke up with her before heading off to war.  She tells herself she's over him but deep inside herself she's not so sure.

So to make sure she arrives at her younger brother's house with a suitcase determined to tag along at his men only weekend getaway.  When she arrives it doesn't go as expected Denny isn't happy to see her and starts ripping at her.  Now she believes she has made a terrible mistake.

Life hasn't been that good for Denny the last three years but he has finally found a place he loves with a great job at Jilly Farms and has made some good friends.  He never expected his ex-girlfriend Becky to come when he invited his friends to a men only fishing weekend.  He knew letting go of Becky was the worst thing he has ever done.  Now he's determined to win her back at no cost!

Then an accident happens that forces Becky to stay in town longer and she learns Denny isn't the boy she used to know but a good man.

I was really glad when Becky and Denny were able to resolve their issues to get together once again and that Becky finally grew up and started to love the town and it's inhabitants.  Loved how she interacted with the young children and really bonded with one of them.

Harvest Moon (Virgin River) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Harvest Moon" the 14th book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

Rising sous-chef Kelly Matlock's sudden collapse at work is a wake-up call. Disillusioned and burned out, she's retreated to her sister Jillian's house in Virgin River to rest and reevaluate.

Puttering in Jill's garden and cooking with her heirloom vegetables is wonderful, but Virgin River is a far cry from San Francisco. Kelly's starting to feel a little too unmotivated … until she meets Lief Holbrook. The handsome widower looks more like a lumberjack than a sophisticated screenwriter — a combination Kelly finds irresistible. But less appealing is Lief's rebellious stepdaughter, Courtney. She's the reason they moved from L.A., but Courtney's finding plenty of trouble even in Virgin River.

Kelly's never fallen for a guy with such serious baggage, but some things are worth fighting for. Besides, a bratty teenager can't be any worse than a histrionic chef … right?

My Review:

Kelley is an up-coming chef in San Francisco when the wife of her boss falsely and publicly accuses her of having an affair with her husband.  Kelley collapses in the middle of the kitchen and the paramedics are horrified that people are stepping over her instead of helping her.  When her health is revealed to be in serious condition no one is concerned to what happened to her.  The man she considered her idol cuts off complete contact with her.

She retreats to Virgin River where her sister Julian has settled down and made a life with Colin Riordan.    She meets Lief (his wife is dead) who has rescued his step-daughter Courtney from her unconcerned family from L.A. and moved to Virgin River for a better life.

Julian has converted her house into an organic garden which she shares with Colin.  Both are very happy to have her there besides they love her cooking.

Kelley takes over Jillian's kitchen and soon soups, sauces, cakes, pies, etc. are pouring out of her kitchen.  She feels like she needs to find a job but really loves using her sister's kitchen for her cooking.  She decides to offer her cooking to the local people in the community.  Jillian encourages her and suggests they have a start a joint business together.

Lief is really interested in Kelley and the feelings are mutual.  The only problem in their relationship is Courtney who continues to act unfriendly towards Kelley but she's friendly with everyone else.  Lief introduces her to a psychologist and to horseback riding with Lilly and Blue.  She slowly changes her attitude and finally she resolves her problem with Kelley which was a hoot!

Lief and Kelley were great together because they both had major tragedies in their life and they understood how each of them felt.  They really supported each other and I'm really surprised that Kelley was quite patient with Courtney who was a great pain.

This book made me hungry every time Kelley cooked something and it made me want to cook too!  I'm not much of a cook more of a baker!  I love to bake and special occasions I'm always making something.

Promise Canyon (Virgin River) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Promise Canyon" the 13th book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

After years spent on ranches around Los Angeles, Clay Tahoma is delighted to be Virgin River's new veterinary assistant. The secluded community's wild beauty tugs at his Navajo roots, and he's been welcomed with open arms by everyone in town — everyone except Lilly Yazhi.
Lilly has encountered her share of strong, silent, traditional men within her own aboriginal community, and she's not interested in coming back for more. In her eyes, Clay's earthy, sexy appeal is just an act used to charm wealthy women like his ex-wife. She can't deny his gift for gentling horses, but she's not about to let him control her. There's just one small problem — she can't control her attraction to Clay.

But in Virgin River, faith in new beginnings and the power of love has doors opening everywhere.…

My Review:

This book is about Clay and Lilly who have a love of horses.  He's Navajo Indian and he's the new vet technician for Nate Jensen.  He's originally from Flagstaff and the Navajo Nation.  He's recently divorced, left Los Angeles and his beautiful ex-wife and wanted to a fresh start on life so he moved to Virgin River.  He wants to keep a long distance away from her and have a stable place for him to live with his son Gabe who is seventeen (he lives with his grandparents).

Lilly is Hopi and trying to run from her traditional native culture.  When she was thirteen she was betrayed and abandoned early which she is trying to forget.  She still hasn't recovered and tries really hard to not get involved with another drop-dead sexy Navajo Native.  But that changes when fate steps in and they find an injured and abandoned horse.  When she sees how gentle, loving and patient he is with horses she changes her mind.

Jack the proprietor of the town's bar and eatery is named the Executor of Hope McCrea's trust (she recently died), which she has left to the whole community.  As people come out and voice their opinions on what Jack should use the money for he becomes unpopular with them.  He's only trying to do what he thinks is best for the community.

Colin Riordan is involved in a helicopter crash which results in terrible news.  He becomes addicted to Oxycontin.  His family tries to help him overcome this and to rebuild his life over again.

I really enjoyed reading how the Tahoma family is very family oriented and how Clay supports his dad.  He actually got past his own needs to help build a relationship with his dad.

My Review:

Wild Man Creek is the story of two scarred people, software executive Jillian Mattock and former Blackhawk helicopter pilot Colin Riordan who both end up in the tiny Humboldt County town of Virgin River. Jill is escaping a case of shattered trust that cost her her Silicon Valley job and Colin is recovering from a helicopter crash that ended his military career. He has fought painkiller addiction and rehab and is now turning to painting wildlife but still plans to pursue flying. Jill, on the other hand, turns to her childhood love of gardening for therapy. Neither is looking for romance or commitment, so when their initial meeting turns to attraction, they both embark on a relationship they know will be short term. Colin will go to Africa to photograph wildlife and in the hope he can land a bush pilot job that will enable him to resume flying, while Jill gardens furiously, but knows she'll be returning to the corporate world come September. Meanwhile the two find comfort in each other, and for the first time for either of them, they begin to trust, to heal, and to live.

Jill rents an old Victorian on ten acres and begins returning the land to the garden paradise it once was by   growing high end fruits and vegetables used in five-star restaurants with the same vegetables her great-grandmother used to grow when she lived with her. The gardening adventure rolls forward with the addition of greenhouses and a helper and before long, Jill wonders if there's a future in raising organic vegetables for commercial use.

Colin paints and with Jill's encouragement, decides to see if his work can sell.

Both Colin and Jill decide to have a summer romance but without any attachments.  As they spend more time together they both fall in love!

A Summer in Sonoma [Mass Market Paperback]

My Review:

I'm a huge fan of Robyn's Virgin River series so I thought I would try one of her contemporary romances and I'm glad I did!

This book is about four best friends who are the verge of 30 where two are married and the other two aren't.

Cassie is an emergency room nurse with a penchant for picking the wrong guys. Her latest date turns into a disaster bordering on date rape, when an unlikely hero comes to her recue - Walt, a tattooed biker with a taste for the finer things.  She's very hesistant to get involved with Walt because she doesn't think it's appropriate (he's a biker and his job isn't high paying, etc.)  Wait until she finds out his real job is!

Julie can just get pregnant by her husband Billy by a mere look!  She's a stay home mom who takes care of the bills (she's hardly keeping up with them - sometimes she doesn't pay certain ones each month just to have food on the table) and her three children.  Billy works two jobs one as a firefighter and the other as a construction worker) so all he can do is come home, eat and then go to bed!  Julie finds out she is pregnant again and she's having a breakdown!  A tragedy occurs and that wakes up Billy to what's happening to the bills, etc.

Marty and Joe have lost the romance in their marriage.  She yells at him to clean up his mess, take a shower, shave, etc.  He thinks the yard work is the man's territory while the household is the woman's territory so everytime Marty yells at him he works harder on the outside work.

She's very tempted by her ex boyfriend Ryan who cheated on her years ago.  He's says he's broken up with his fiancee and says he misses Marty and how he could have given up what they had!

Beth is a workaholic OB/GYN and cancer survivor who gets some bad news.  She finds out she has breast cancer and doesn't want any of her friends to know.  Cassie finds out by accident when one of her co-workers asks her how her friend is recuperating.  She finds love with another doctor who understands and knows what she is going through.

Angel's Peak (Virgin River) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Angel's Peak" the 10th book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

Four years ago, Air Force sweethearts Franci Duncan and Sean Riordan reached an impasse. She wanted marriage and a family. He didn't. But a chance meeting proves that the bitter breakup hasn't cooled their sizzling chemistry.

Sean has settled down in spite of himself — he's not the cocky young fighter pilot he was when Franci left, and he wants them to try again. After all, they have a history…but that's not all they share.

Franci's secret reason for walking away when Sean refused to commit is now three and a half: a redheaded cherub named Rosie who shares her daddy's emerald-green eyes. Sean is stunned — and furious with Franci for the deception.

News travels fast in Virgin River, and soon the whole town is taking sides. Rebuilding their trust could take a small miracle — and the kind of love that can move mountains.

My Review:

The only thing I didn't like in this book was that Franci didn't tell Sean he had a daughter called Rosie and why didn't she give him a chance when they first met again!

I'm glad that Sean grew up and wasn't that cocky airpilot anymore and took responsibility when he found out about Rosie.

Forbidden Falls (Virgin River)

I've finished reading "Forbidden Falls" a book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

Virgin River is abuzz with the news that a stranger bought the town's abandoned church on eBay. The buyer, a young widowed reverend, is a little like the building itself: in need of some loving care.

Noah Kincaid arrives ready to roll up his sleeves and revitalize his new purchase, but he's going to need some help. An ad in the local paper brings an improbable candidate his way.

"Pastor's assistant" is not a phrase that springs to mind when Noah meets brassy, beautiful Alicia Baldwin. With her colorful clothes and even more colorful past, Alicia needs a respectable job so she can regain custody of her children. Noah can't help but admire her spunk and determination, and she may just be the breath of fresh air he needs.

This unlikely duo may come from two different worlds, but they have more in common than anyone would have expected. And in Virgin River lasting happiness is never out of the question.

My Review:

Noah and Alicia are both great characters and I really enjoyed their love story!

I admire Alicia's spunk and determination to gain custody of her kids by taking a respectable job.  Her previous job was as a stripper which she totally hated.  She is attracted to Noah but believes he is only in lust because it's been awhile since he has had a woman but he reassures her that is part of it and he loves her.  I'm glad that she loves her kids and will do anything for them.

Noah is kind hearted and I'm glad he took a chance on Alicia as his assistant/secretary even though she doesn't really look the part.  I'm glad he fell in love with her because she is just the right women for him (she the total opposite of him).

Her ex-husband on the other hand is a controlling freak!

Moonlight Road (Virgin River) (Mass Market Paperback)

I've finished reading "Moonlight Road" the ____ book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

With her beloved younger siblings settled and happy, Erin Foley has empty nest syndrome. At age thirty-five.

So she's hitting the pause button on her life and holing up in a secluded (but totally upgraded—she's not into roughing it) cabin near Virgin River. Erin is planning on getting to know herself…not the shaggy-haired mountain man she meets.

In fact, beneath his faded fatigues and bushy beard, Aiden Riordan is a doctor, recharging for a summer after leaving the navy. He's intrigued by the pretty, slightly snooty refugee from the rat race—her meditating and journaling are definitely keeping him at arm's length. He'd love to get closer…if his scruffy exterior and crazy ex-wife don't hold him back.

But maybe it's something in the water— unlikely romances seem to take root in Virgin River…helped along by some well-intentioned meddling, of course.

My Review:

I have to admit I didn't really like Erin at first because I though she was rude, stuck up and a sissy!  Then after she got to know Aiden I started liking her!

I really liked Aiden because he's really a great guy who treats woman right, loves his family and supports them, etc.

I'm glad that Erin gave Aiden a chance to get to know her and their romance was not really steamy but sweet!

I also liked seeing former Virgin River heros and their heroines!

But can the passion and commitment of a young woman who has never given up on him mend his broken body and shattered heart?

As the people of Virgin River rally around Rick, another recent arrival tests the tightly knit mountain town's famous welcoming spirit. Dan Brady has a questionable past, and he's looking for a place to start over. He'd like it to be Virgin River…if he can find a way in. But he never expects to find it in the arms of a woman who was as much an outcast as himself.

For a favorite son returned from war and an outsider looking for a home, Virgin River offers them a chance to make peace with the men they once were…and to find the dreams they thought they'd lost.

My review:

I really like this series and I would recommend this one to any book reviewer.

Glad to see there everyone had an HEA and conflicts/problems were resolved, etc.

Heard there are going to be some more books in 2010 and I can't wait.

5/5

Temptation Ridge (Virgin River, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Temptation Ridge" the 6th book in her Virgin River series by Robyn Carr.

Product Description

At twenty-five, after five years as her mother's caregiver, it's time for Shelby to experience freedom and adventure. Time for travel, college and romance. But when she visits Virgin River, she runs into Luke Riordan, decidedly not whom she has in mind.
A handsome Blackhawk pilot, Luke exited the army after twenty years, four wars and having been shot out of the sky three times. At thirty-eight he's tough and jaded. His major was in one-night stands, with a minor in commitment avoidance.

Technically, these two are all wrong for one another. But sometimes what you want and what you need are two different things…two very good things.
