MT Review: Never Die Alone (A Bentz/Montoya Novel)

I've finished "Never Die Alone" the 8tj book in her Bentz and Montoya series by Lisa Jackson.

Product Description

Never Drop Your Guard

It should be the best day of their lives. Too bad they never get to see it. On the cusp of their twenty-first birthday, he strikes. His victims are always twins, their ritualistic murders planned in exquisite detail, down to the moment when they breathe their last together.

Never Close Your Eyes

A possibly innocent man is in prison, and Brianna Hayward needs to convince the New Orleans police. Not just to free her cousin, but to save others who will suffer until the true culprit is found.

Reporter Jase Bridges is intrigued. It’s a story that could make his career — as long as Brianna never guesses the secret in Jase’s past.

Or You’ll Never See Him Coming

Detective Rick Bentz had doubts about the “21” conviction when he worked the case in L.A. Now the real murderer may be loose in Bentz’s backyard. Twin sisters from All Saints College have vanished on the eve of their twenty-first birthday. And as Bentz and his partner, Reuben Montoya, desperately follow the trail, a killer prepares to unite his next victims in death forever.

My Review:

Storyline:  One sultry night in a southern town a killer strikes and the next morning Caitlyn Montgomery Bandeaux wakes up covered in blood.  She doesn't remember what happened the night before when her ex-husband was viciously murdered like others she has known.

Caitlyn turns to Adam Hunt the new psychologist when she is wanted by the police and haunted by terrifying dreams.

Characters:  Caitlyn seems to have trouble dealing with certain situations which makes her very fragile and she needs the help of her twin sister Kelley.

Adam feels very guilty when he instigates himself into Caitlyn's life because he's lying to her and the feelings he is developing for her.

Romance:  Kind of hard to describe a romance based on a man lying and feeling guilty with a deeply troubled woman.

Villain:  Very twisted and sick individual who is a true psycho.

RS Review: Wicked Ways

I've finished "Wicked Ways" the

New York Times bestselling authors Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush join forces to craft this spine-tingling thriller in which one woman's birthright holds the key to a rash of brutal murders.

But for months now, Elizabeth has worried that she's far from normal that she's somehow the cause of a series of brutal, horrible deaths.

Her mean-spirited boss. A bullying traffic cop. Her cheating husband. Elizabeth had reason to be angry with them all. She didn't mean for them to die. No one will take her fears seriously — except the private investigator prying into her past.

The more scared and angry Elizabeth becomes, the higher the death toll grows. But those who wrong her aren't the only ones in danger. Because others have secrets too, and a relentless urge to kill without mercy or remorse.

I've finished "Ready to Die" the book in her Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli series by Lisa Jackson.

Product Description

One by one, he’ll stalk them, then he’ll squeeze the trigger, savoring the way each lifeless body crumples to the reddening snow. One down already. And then there were five. When Detective Regan Pescoli drives to Sheriff Dan Grayson’s house to present her resignation, she’s prepared for an argument. She’s not expecting to find Grayson shot and bleeding out on the frozen ground. The assassination attempt leaves Grayson barely clinging to life and the entire police department of Grizzly Falls, Montana, in shock. Every lawman has enemies, but something about this shooting suggests more than a simple grudge. Now Pescoli feels compelled to stay on the force until the case is solved. She and Detective Selena Alvarez — who is torn between a new relationship and her loyalty to Grayson — work to whittle down the list of suspects. But the deeper they go, the more personal and dangerous the case becomes. Then a prominent judge’s body is found and the killer sends a sinister warning to the press: “Who’s Next?” Headstrong and eager for justice, Pescoli has no intention of waiting around to find out. She’ll track the scant clues on her own if she has to, but she has no idea where her search will lead. Two down, four to go and now Regan and Pescoli are at the top of a killer’s list. And when hunter meets prey, both must be willing to kill — and ready to die.

My Review:

It's Christmas season in Grizzly Falls and Detective Regan Pescoli has just been proposed to by her sexy and handsome cowboy boyfriend Nate Santana. He has also gave her a stipulation that he will give her a week to let him know her answer. He wants to make her his wife and not just a lover. Regan knows she loves Nate but after two divorces and two kids later she is hesitant to make another failed commitment.

As she arrives at her bosses Dan Grayson to settle some choices she witnesses his assassination attempt right in front of her. Now he is in the hospital and then a high profile judge's body is found and both Selena and Regan wonder if the two cases are connected.

During the investigation they find a hit list with 6 names that a killer is determined to kill one by one. Also it leads to someone they both know.

This book had a well written storyline with characters you care about and some you may not, tons of actions that keeps you on your toes.

Interesting drama regarding family members of the Grayson clan and I'm curious what people's reaction is going to be when they find out the truth about the new additions to the family dynamics.

My Review:

In Deception Bay there is a cult with some very deep and dark secrets and a killer is on the loose.

Detective Savannah Dunbar is a surrogate for her sister and brother-in law and is in her last trimester.  She is about to go on maternity leave when people are getting murdered left and right.

I kind of thought it was of weird that she started having an attraction and having sex dreams about her brother-in-law.

It was unbelievable that after giving birth in a car during a blizzard that she is at work the next day in tip top shape.

This series is a little slow moving with interesting story lines and intriguing deep dark secrets the cult wants to keep.

My Review:

Sixteen years ago someone killed Harley Taggert and the perpetrator has never been found.  Dutch Holland bribed local law force because he believed one of his daughters killed Harley though he wasn't sure which one.

The book starts off with Dutch Holland running for Governor and wants all family secrets out in the open.   He calls his three adult daughters DA lawyer Miranda, Claire divorced mother of two and rebellious Tessa back home to ask them who killed Harley Taggert?  Dutch hires private detective Frank Petrillo to investigate the crime just as local bad boy journalist Kane Morgan comes home to write a book about Harley's murder.

Claire was involved with Harley in her teens though he was two-timing her with his ex-girlfriend.  She finally realized she was in love with Kane and after one night of passion he left for the Army. She has her own little dark secret which she has to deal with.  Besides her ex is a pervert and loves young girls (he was sleeping with his step-son's girlfriend which he happened to walk in on them doing the mamba).

Kane fell for Claire hard and it was a case of the bad boy and the princess.  He wants to get back at Dutch for ruining his life by writing a book about Harley's murder but his love for Claire means more to him then his revenge.  He only wants to protect her and her family.

This book is very complex full of lies, backstabbing, etc. with four engaging characters while others will sicken you.  The book jumps back in time to 1980 with a summer full of mysterious deaths to 1996.

My Review:

This book opens a year later after the end of "Born to Die" and we learn the events that has shaped Selena into who she is today.  Regan is still battling and arguing with her two children and parents can relate to her situation.  We also see both their relationships developing and deepening with the men in their lives and the Christmas rituals around the police station.

A serial killer has claimed two women and leaving their naked bodies encased in a block of ice.  He is displaying them in the same manner and seems to be taunting Selena by leaving personal items at the scene of the crimes.  He is leaving a message and is threatening to her since she knew both victims.

We learn a secret about Selena that she doesn't want anyone knowing about - her long lost son she gave up visits her house and old boyfriend and partner Dylan O'Keefe a PI comes back into her life.

This book is another nail biting and thrilling mystery with a gruesome killer.

Tara of Gaelf's birth is shrouded in mystery by 1290 Wales.  Some locals believe she is the daughter of a lost noble man while others believe she is a witch a child of midwife.  The only known fact is that Tara owns a DARK EMERALD which proves she is the rightful heir of Twyll.

Tremaine has exiled his half-brother Rhys who now leads a bunch of thieves. Rhys rescues Tara when Tremaine's men try to abduct her but holds her as his prisoner. He quickly realizes that if she is the Twyll heir than his father was the murderer of her parents. Tara doesn't trust her captor or her heart which announces she loves Rhys.  Rhys surprises himself by falling in love with his prisoner.

The main characters are well written and you can and feel the chemistry between them.  They work well together and the secondary characters help pull off the story.  The villain was truly evil and demented.

RS Review: Born to Die [Hardcover]

I've finished "Born to Die" the 3rd book in her Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli series by Lisa Jackson.

Product Description

Appearances …

A sad, strange coincidence … that's Dr. Kacey Lambert's initial response to the deaths of two women who bear an uncanny resemblance to herself. It's not like there was any real connection between Kacey and the B-movie actress or the elementary school teacher. But Detective Selena Alvarez suspects otherwise.

Can Be …

One of the bodies contained traces of poison at the time of death. Selena and her partner, Detective Regan Pescoli, can find no motive for murder. But Kacey has started to notice ties between the dead women's lives and her own-all close in age, born within miles of each other. And all have links to Trace O'Halleran, the man Kacey just started dating.

Deadly …

The deeper Kacey digs, the more reason she has to fear. More look-alikes are dying, and the killer is getting bolder and more brutal. And Kacey knows it's only a matter of time before hers is the next name on a list of those who were born to die …

My Review

The book opens with the apparent suicide of 35 year old B-movie Actress Shelley Bonaventure but the detective in charge believes otherwise.  A few days later 35 year old Jocelyn Wallis a grade school teacher   falls from a cliff in Grizzly Falls, Montana. She barely survives but dies from internal injuries at the hospital.

Dr. Acacia (Kacey) Lambert has heard rumors of women that look exactly like her.  When a recent patient that looks exactly like her is killed she gets suspicious and starts her own investigation with an old friend helping.  She contacts detective Alvarez and Pesoli who have figured out the dead-ringers aren't suicides but are being killed.  She is also attracted to Trace O'Halleran a sexy rancher with a young son who happens to have been formerly involved with two of the women.

I really did like Kacey and Trace characters because they both are wary of love and very independent.  You can see how much Trace loves his son and would do anything for him.

Hmm I thought there wasn't really a romance between Kacey and Trace (they didn't really go on a date, didn't even kiss, etc. and then at the end they are planning on getting married?)  I thought that was a big HUH?

We also get into the mind and view of the killer (boy were they really messed up and definately didn't feel any remorse or feelings about killing their victims)!

Also the detectives know who set the killer with information at the end but they don't have the evidence yet but they are determined to convict them!

A novice nun named Sister Camille has been found dressed in a yellowed bridal gown and viciously garroted, her body covered with an altar cloth. Valerie Houston is devastated by her sister’s death. For weeks, she’d begged Camille to leave St. Marguerite’s, where she seemed determined to live as some kind of martyr. But Camille had a knack for making bad choices — she joined the convent in part because she’d fallen for Val’s soon-to-be ex-husband, Slade. Convinced the police aren’t doing enough, Val begins to investigate. Slade, on a mission to repair their marriage, is determined to help her. But the deeper Val’s inquiries go, the more twisted the case becomes. St. Marguerite’s is far from the tranquil retreat many believe, and everyone, from handsome Father Frank O’Toole to the mysterious Mother Superior, has their own agenda. Despite their closeness, even Camille had a hidden life Val never suspected. But someone knew about Camille’s past — and Val’s, too. Now she has no choice but to catch a devious, depraved killer intent on purging St. Marguerite’s of all its sins — before she becomes the next victim…

My Review:

Camille Cammie Renard has always been the black sheep of the family.  In high school she was an outrageous flirt, liked to flaunt her sexuality and toeing the line.  After she felt guilty breaking up her older sister Valerie's marriage she joined the St. Marguerite's convent in New Orleans to seek forgiveness and redemption.  She has trouble giving up her old life and reverts back to her old ways.

She becomes pregnant but before she can leave the church she is found dead dressed in a yellowed bridal gown, viciously garroted and her body covered with an altar cloth.  She is found by Sister Lucia who has an unusual power.

Camille's older sister Val was the more serious one of the family and studious and extremely outspoken.  She's an insomniac and has always been protective of her younger sister.  She had a falling out with Camille when she betrayed Val with Slade when she lived with them.  She filed for a divorce and opened up a Bed and Breakfast with one of her closest friends in New Orleans.  Camille reaches out to her to reconcile but before that happens she is murdered.  Meanwhile Slade arrives in New Orleans helping to reconcile and save his marriage.

Val and Detective Rick Bentz's top suspect is Father Frank O'Toole.  Father Frank is handsome, virile, strong and very athletic.  All the young nuns or novices fall for his charm and good lucks while he is a priest at St. Marguerite's.

Detective Reuben Montoya is getting weird vibes while investigating. In his teen years he dated Cammie, was a friend of Frank's and his brother dated Lucia in high school.  Sister Charity, the 60-year-old mother superior at St. Marguerite's withholds evidence and is secretive concerning what she knows about Cammie and the other sisters. The investigation seems to heat up after another nun is found murdered in the same perverted fashion as Camille, two more nuns go missing, and Val's life is threatened.

Also during the investigation the murder of a red-head streetwalker is called in.  The return of Father John (a serial killer who dresses up as a priest  who murders red-head streetwalkers who leaves his calling card of a $100 dollar bill with the defaced eyes of President Lincoln.  While killing them he listens to a certain station who's radio personality was his first victim (she's the only one who lived).

Cruz Montoya is Reuben's younger brother who is the rebellious one in the family.  He's a detective and he inserts himself into the investigation when he finds out Lucia is at St. Marguerite's.  They use to date in high school when he crashed his car one night while driving very fast.  Her dad drove him off and when he went to see Lucia at the hospital she was gone.  He tried finding her but he had no luck.  It's quite obvious both of them still love each other.

I really like the romance between Reuben and Abby because she really understands what his job means to him and how he really cares for the victim's and their families.  They have a son.

I also like Rick and Olivia's romance too for the same reasons.  Rick has a daughter from a previous marriage and he has a daughter with Olivia.

The main killer was very psychotic and had abandonment problems.  They thought they were doing God's Will and had no remorse for their killings.  Had a very bad childhood with a lot of bullying.
