PNR Review: Black and Blue (Otherworld Assassin) Mass Market Paperback

I've finished "Black and Blue" the 2nd book in her Otherworld Assassin series by Gena Showalter.

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter’s pulse-pounding paranormal series continues with an electrifying story about the ultimate warrior and his prize: a beautiful woman he will do anything to possess.

HE IS EVERY WOMAN’S FANTASY

My Review:

Corbin Blue works as a black ops agent and he has a reputation as a playboy. He is one of the most powerful otherworlders, wealthy and a famous football player.  He has always been attracted to Evangeline but he considers her off limits because she's the bosses daughter.

Evangeline has left the assassin world behind after a job got botched and is now a doctor.  She agrees to work with Corbin after finding out her father is missing.  She's been attracted to Blue but she doesn't appreciate his playboy status.

I didn't really like Evangeline because she has a prickly and sarcastic personality when dealing with Corbin.  I admire her too because she does speak her mind and isn't afraid to use her smartness when needed.

YA Review: Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles, Book 1) [Hardcover]

I've finished "Alice in Zombieland" the 1st book in her White Rabbit Chronicles series by Gena Showalter.

Product Description

She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

My Review:

This book is inspired by Alice in Wonderland but I'm happy it didn't go in that way (not really a fan of Alice in Wonderland) though the heroine's name is Alice and there is a white rabbit.

Alice Bell is a typical happy teenager who loves her family though her dad is paranoid and disturbing (sees zombies) and doesn't let any of them go out after dark because of this.

Then on the night of her birthday after watching her sister perform on stage she loses everything after a tragic car crash. She goes to live with her grandparents who live in a nearby neighborhood. She goes to a new school, make new friends and live a life without her family.

Then she meets Cole and as soon as their eyes meet their is an instant connection between them. Cole Holland is a bad-ass tattooed leader of a group of misfit teens who constantly have bruises and sometimes miss school or are late. Cole also has a tender and caring side to him which he shows to Alice once in awhile. He knows things that Alice has been figuring out and she needs him to tell her she isn't crazy and that he dad was right.

Alice is great heroine because she's strong, smart, speaks her mind, has an amazing sense of humor and willing to fight to honor her family and friends.

Cole is a great hero because he's strong, smart, a great leader and fighter, treats Alice with respect and is prepared to defend her to the bitter death.

My Review:

Sabin possesses the demon Doubt and he intentionally destroys his lovers until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid who is very match.  When both of them meet they instantly connect and her true self slowly emerges.  She tries to control her deadly true nature (she is a Harpy) but Sabin seems to bring it out.

Sabin's last lover killed herself after falling to Doubt's words and Sabin has forced himself not to get involved again with any woman just find Pandora's box.  He wants to use Gwen against Galen as an ally and it was funny when we find out Doubt is scared of Gwen.

I really enjoyed the insights of the other Lords and the interactions between all of them.

My Review:

This is a spin-off from Gena's Alien Huntress series so if you have read that you would be familiar with the terms AIR and Otherworlders.

Solomon Judah works as an black-ops agent who finds himself caged and bound in a circus zoo one day.  He has known love from his adoptive parents but everyone else calls him a freak or animal.

Vika has grown up under the cruel hands of her father and he has beaten her so bad he has taken her hearing.  She treats the captives kindly but some of them taunt her and even throw stones, food, etc. at her.

Solo was a great hero because he was big, strong, protective and Vika was a great heroine because she's smart, kind and how she coped and endeared the treatment she received from her father and a couple of Otherworlder captives.

My Review:

Fifteen centuries ago when Kaia Skyhawk was 14 yrs old she wanted to be the strongest harpy.  At the Harpy Games her only rival was Juliette the Eradicator.  She has captured a man as her consort who is defiant.  Kaia thinking she can make this man obedient defies her mother's orders and frees the man.  In retaliation the man goes on a rampage killing many harpies and then disappears.  Kaia is known as the Disappointment and even after fifteen hundred years her mom and everyone still blames her for the killings. Kaia and her sister Bianka are banned from entering any tournaments.

Kaia and her sister are suddenly invited to participate in the tournament which makes both of them suspicious.  They both realize someone is setting them up and it could either be Juliette or their mom but they agree they have to participate.

Kaia knows they Strider is her soulmate but him and his demon Defeat won't acknowledge their attraction.  Strider decides to get closer to Kaia when he realizes the winner gets the dangerous ancient Paring Rod which can annihilate his whole race.

I really enjoyed reading about the Harpy games and learning about their culture.  Loved the bond between Kaia and her sister Bianka - you can feel the closeness and love they share for each other.

Also enjoyed the Paris side story for his search for Sienna and I can't wait to read his book next!

YA Review: Twisted (Harlequin Teen) [Hardcover]

I've finished "Twisted" the 3rd book in her Aden Stone series by Gena Showalter.

Product Description

Sixteen-year-old Aden Stone has had a hell of a week. He's been:

Tortured by angry witches. Hypnotized by a vengeful fairy. Spied on by the most powerful vampire in existence. And, oh, yeah, killed — twice.

His vampire girlfriend might have brought him back to life, but he's never felt more out of control. There's a darkness within him, something taking over … changing him. Worse, because he was meant to die, death now stalks him at every turn. Any day could be his last.

Once upon a time, the three souls trapped inside his head could have helped him. He could have protected himself. But as the darkness grows stronger, the souls grow weaker — just like his girlfriend. The more vampire Aden becomes, the more human Victoria becomes, until everything they know and love is threatened.

Life couldn't get any worse. Could it?

My Review:

At the end of Unraveled Tucker stabbed Aden and the aftermath of that situation.  This book opens with Aden and Victoria fighting for their lives to survive and not kill each other.  They each take turns feeding off each other and when they finally gain control of themselves they have switched personalities and powers.  Aden is the big bad vampire and Victoria is the helpless human.

Mary Ann has run away thinking she could protect everyone she loves but she doesn't know she has fairies and witches after her.  Riley goes after her and with the help of Tucker they manage to lessen the enemies.  To really save Mary Ann Riley makes a huge decision which causes a major situation for Mary Ann.

At times I found it hard to watch Aden struggle with his vampire instincts because I wasn't sure if he was going to hurt Victoria in some scenes or not.  He says he would never hurt her - but you never know.  I really felt for him when he found out who his dad really was - he was a real jerk.

I really feel for Victoria because she is so helpless now when she really wants to help Aden - glad her brother is helping him.

It was heartbreaking what happened to Mary Ann at the end of the book and also to Riley.  Glad Tucker storyline is finally finished never really liked him.

YA Review: Unraveled (Harlequin Teen) [Hardcover]

I've finished "Unraveled" the 2nd book in her Aden Stone series by Gena Showalter.

Product Description

Since coming to Crossroads, Oklahoma, former outcast Aden Stone has been living the good life. Never mind that one of his best friends is a werewolf, his girlfriend is a vampire princess who hungers for his blood, and he's supposed to be crowned Vampire King — while still a human! Well, kind of.

With four — oops, three now — human souls living inside his head, Aden has always been "different" himself. These souls can time-travel, raise the dead, possess another's mind and, his least favorite these days, tell the future.

The forecast for Aden? A knife through the heart.

Because a war is brewing between the creatures of the dark, and Aden is somehow at the center of it all. But he isn't about to lie down and accept his destiny without a fight. Not when his new friends have his back, not when Victoria has risked her own future to be with him, and not when he has a reason to live for the first time in his life ….

My Review:

The first storyline deals with Aden being officially crowned King of the vampires in two weeks when Vlad funeral ceremony is scheduled.  Many of them aren't happy about this but he slowly earns their respect by proving himself capable of leading them.  He's able to control his powers, make good sensible decisions and possesses some new abilities.

The second storyline deals with Mary-Ann hating being the weakest link so she asks Aden to teach her how to fight and break holds, etc.  Riley isn't happy about this and gets jealous (he definitely shows it) and voices his opinions.  He's the cool guy with the hot looks, sweet, caring and very possessive boyfriend.  Then Mary-Ann has to deal with losing her hunger for human food instead she enjoys draining supernatural creatures of their life forces.

This book had tons of character development with non stop action.  It made me laugh hysterically when Riley turned into his wolf self and interacted with Mary-Ann's father.

Ecstasy in Darkness (Alien Huntress, Book 5) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Ecstasy in Darkness" the 5th book in her Alien Huntress series by Gena Showalter.

Product Description

New York Times bestselling sensation Gena Showalter enthralls with a dark, tantalizing world of humans, otherworlders, powers beyond imagining, and a seductive vampire undone by his insatiable hunger for one woman. . . . Growing up poor on New Chicago’s meanest streets, Ava Sans had two options: be the predator or be the prey. No contest. Now, working for Alien Investigation and Removal, she’s been ordered to capture the biggest, baddest warrior of all — a vampire too beautiful to be real, with the abilityto manipulate time. Once the leader of the entire vampire army, McKell has been deemed savage and unstable, spurned even by his own kind.To McKell, humans should be nothing more than sustenance. Yet the petite, golden-skinned Ava is a fascinating contradiction — vicious yet witty, strong yet vulnerable, lethal but fiercely loyal. Against his better judgment, McKell craves that loyalty, and much more. When the chase leads to seduction, McKell and Ava will race to discover the truth about his past. But the answers will come at a price, even for a woman who thought she had nothing left to lose. . . .

About the Author

GENA SHOWALTER is the New York Times and national bestselling author of more than twenty novels in a wide range of genres, including her acclaimed Alien Huntress series for Pocket Books: Awaken Me Darkly, Enslave Me Sweetly, Savor Me Slowly, Seduce the Darkness, and Ecstasy in Darkness. Her fiction has appeared in Cosmopolitan and Seventeen and has been nominated for a prestigious RITA, as well as the National Reader’s Choice Award. She is universally acknowledged to be “made of awesome.” Visit her website at http://www.genashowalter.com/.

My Review:

Alien Investigation Removal (AIR) trainees Ava Sans and Noelle Tremain are the best of friends. Noelle was a rich girl rebel, while Ava grew up poor with an alcoholic mother. They have always relied on one another, and together they make a great team who cause a great deal of problems because they don't listen to the rules. They're called upon by their supervisor to bring down Victor McKell, the one-time leader of the vampire army who can stop time in short bursts. McKell is thought to be unstable and psychotic. Perhaps the two-woman Apocalypse team of Ava and Noelle will have better luck at apprehending this dangerous vampire?

When Ava and Noelle come across McKell's camp, they taunt him with sexual innuendos, which he responds to. Basically Ava and Noelle tell him they will make out in front of him and him being a man, is all for it. Because of that, they're able to incapacitate him. McKell promises murder, although he's very attracted to Ava. He's able to escape because of his powers, and will return for his revenge and to claim Ava. Noelle can't believe McKell got the upper hand on them, especially Ava, who can't stop thinking of her favorite butterscotch candy when it comes to McKell. In Ava's mind, she has called dibs on McKell, although she knows she's playing with fire when it comes to him. But then McKell arrives on her doorstep and wants to help Ava and AIR apprehend an alien queen on the loose who, through sex, can pass along a disease that causes men to become cannibals. Ava and McKell kiss on their bargain, and soon McKell won't allow Ava out of his sight because Ava is his mate. McKell isn't happy about this new turn of events because the only blood he can now drink is Ava's.

McKell was selfish, possessive, and grumpy (moody). He knew how to extract revenge on the humans around him -- including Ava. He was arrogant, but knew when to tone that arrogance down when dealing with Ava. And Ava, the feisty little minx, knew exactly which buttons to press when it came to McKell. Despite being insecure, due to a rocky past, she was rough and crazy. She didn't take crap from anyone. She helped McKell form a soft side.

My Review:

"Temptation on Ice" by Cherry Adair is a short story in T-FLAC series. Time is running out for kidnapped scientist Michaela when Sebastian, the man she's dreamt of for years arrived to 'rescue' her. But Sebastian's assignment is to take out the sexy woman, he believes faked her own death and is working for the enemy on a bomb that will destroy the world

I liked the characters' back-story and thought that Sebastian's ability to borrow others' paranormal powers was neat, the next thing I know Sebastian is having sex with Michaela and then plans to kill her afterwards. (3 stars)

"Temptation in Shadows" by Gena Showalter was my favorite story of the bunch.  Gabby is a survivor of an experiment that has left her with very dangerous powers. Sean is an operative in a paranormal agency working undercover as a bodyguard in order to get close to Gabby - his job is to determine if Gabby is a threat which needs to be neutralized.

Sean is a great character and I loved his power of manipulating the shadows and the chemistry between him and Gabby is hot. (3.5 stars)

Hunting Temptation" by Lorie O`Clare is about bounty hunter hero, Seth, tracking down a serial killer goes to his favorite 'source' - who unknown to Seth is a werewolf - for info and catches the attention of his informant's sister Jenna. Jenna is intrigued by the human and decides to evade her protective pack to entice Seth to scratch her itches - and inadvertently sets herself up as the next target for the killer.  Seth was a  good character but Jenna was naive and never listened to her brother - she always found herself in situations. (3 stars)

Playing With Fire (Mass Market Paperback)

I've finished reading "Playing with Fire" by Gena Showalter.

Product Description

Playing with Fire
Earth, Wind & Fire aren't just a band anymore . . .

Used to be my greatest achievement was holding a job more than three days. Now suddenly I can shoot fireballs, chill your drink, or blow-dry your hair at fifty paces with a blink of my eye!

It all started when this crazy scientist dropped something in my Grande Mocha Latte. Of course I got wicked sick. Next morning I'm waking up with this total hottie bending over me. He tells me 1)his name's Rome Masters, 2)he's a government agent and 3)I can control the four elements with a thought.

He seems even less pleased by my (apparently irreversible) transformation than I am . . . Because now he'll have to kill me.

Mysteria Lane (Berkley Sensation) (Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Mysteria Lane" the sequel to "Mysteria" by MaryJanice Davidson, Susan Grant, Gena Showalter and P.C. Cast.

From Publishers Weekly
Following 2006's Mysteria, this collection of steamy and sassy stories returns to supernatural suburbia in entertaining style. In "Disdaining Trouble," Davidson introduces the devilish Desdaine triplets, whose encounter with a wishing well has too many repercussions to quite fit into the short format. Shay, the top-ranking she-demon in the devil's army, strikes up a steamy romance with a demon hunter in Grant's "The Nanny from Hell." Showalter's "A Tawdry Affair" combines revenge and red-hot sex when frustrated love-witch Glory uses a magic pen to write fantasies that come true. In Cast's "It's in His Kiss...," hapless teacher Summer can't seem to control her magic, her classroom or her feelings for a flirtatious fairy and a handsome vampire.

Product Description

Return to a town of bewitching seduction and sensual demons. There’s a spellbinding witch of love who wants to make one man hers; a vegan having trouble adapting to vampirism; Satan’s emissary, who is looking for steady work in Colorado; and angelic triplets feeling a wee touch of the devil.
