Last to Die [Mass Market Paperback]
I've finished "Last to Die" the sequel to "One Scream Away" by Kate Brady.
Product Description
A ruthless killer hides in plain sight, someone no one believes is capable of murder. Within a week, six women will be murdered, all punished for their dark pasts. Detective Dani Cole is determined to track down this serial killer whose victims include a young woman she pulled out of a life of crime. Her investigation leads her to a photography foundation and the renowned photographer Mitch Sheridan, a man she she fell in love with years ago but has tried to forget. Dani and Mitch are instantly attracted to each other again, though their troubled pasts keep them from getting too close. Together, through the course of the investigation, they unearth a dark chain of deception that leads to a killer who is closer than they think.

My Review:
Glad to catch up with Neil Mitch's older brother!
Storyline: To find out who killed a former prositute by the name of Rosie and why. Dani helped her start a new life so this is personal. Then Russell Sanders the arts founder director is found dead and now Dani needs to find the link between Rosie and Rusell. Then more prositute bodies start showing up and Dani needs to find out what the connection is!
Characters: I really liked Dani because she is strong, overcame her troubled childhood and became a cop. I really liked Mitch too because he was very caring and is determined to prove his friend/father figure is innocent.
Romance: Dani and Mitch were once teenager lovers but she pushed him away because she didn't want him to know what her family was like. She actually gave him a broken nose and told him their was someone else! They reconnect on this case and it was very sweet how Mitch didn't push her and she finally learned to trust him.
Killer(s): The killer was one screwed up person and really enjoyed their killings! Had a very bad childhood!
4.5/5

AUTHOR BIO
Kate Brady began writing fiction when her doctoral research became tedious. For years, she wrote in the closet, penning several novels that — thankfully — remain there. Now, she leads a double life. Some days, she’s a choral conductor and professor of music education. Other days, she plays with imaginary people on her computer.
Kate lives in Atlanta with her husband, two children, and an array of furry, feathery, and scaly things. When she has time to read, her nose is most often found in a police story or gourmet cooking magazine! She is currently working on her next novel.
Please take it away, Kate!
How did Kate get into the Minds of her Serial Killers?
People are often interested in the research a writer does, especially when it seems far removed from the author’s real life. In my case, I can assure you the villains are far (really far!) removed from my real world. Creating one is an exercise in both research and imagination.
Because the internet is bursting with information, research is easier today than ever before. In the case of serial killers, the entries can be difficult to read…There are some frightening people out there doing frightening things. And some of it is so “out there” there’s no way I could use it in a story: No reader would accept it as a believable concept. (Truth really is stranger than fiction.) Still, the unending body of news stories, psychiatry articles, books, videos, and so on is more than enough to get an author started creating a killer.
But when it comes to really getting into the mind of the villain — trying to establish where his or her brain would go when faced with a situation in the story— imagination has to take over. It’s a challenge because (honest) I’m not a serial killer and to my knowledge I’ve never met one. I think the key to analyzing the killer’s mind (or any character) is to really know the person. This involves creating a backstory and identifying defining moments in the character’s life. Often, I write scenes that I know will never show up in the book itself, but that give me a better idea of what has happened in the character’s life off-screen. Occasionally, I’ll do an “interview” with a character, and though it sounds strange to say it, I’m always surprised by how much I learn when I simply sit down at the computer and ask the killer what he’s thinking!
Thank you for your Guest Post on my blog Kate, greatly appreciated!
