Manga Review: The Betrayal Knows My Name, Vol. 3 [Paperback]

I've finished "The Betrayal Knows My Name Vol. 3" by Hotaru Odagiri.

My Review:

I'm very impressed by the gorgeous artwork and the quality of the manga.  I highly recommend this series if you love character development, tons of action and violence, gorgeous artwork, in-depth character backgrounds and the bonds of friendship and relationships.

In this volume Yuki has finally arrived at the main Giou resident but Luka (aka Zess) tells Yuki he will leave him at the entrance of the resident because some people won't be happy if he goes there.  He also says he will be around if he needs him, etc.  As Yuki steps into the living room he Fuyutoki Kureha and realizes he is related to Aya Kureha his younger sister and the one who takes care of the ones in Twilight Mansion.

Takashiro asks Yuki to follow him because he wants to talk to him.  Then he explains to Yuki that he lied to him about being his older brother and apologizes.  Then he tells Yuki he used to be good friends with Reiga and how he betrayed their clan.  Takashiro was called away on business so he left his fiancee and Reiga to take care of the village.  When he arrived back he noticed the village was on fire and a guard told him it was Reiga that called upon some Opasts to destroy the village.  Takashiro goes to look for his fiancee and sees Reiga over her.  He talks to Reiga and when Reiga turns around it's not his usual form and he leaves.

Takashiro explains that the power of the soul of the half-Duras Reiga was too strong for his fully human incarnations before they reached maturity, which is why his power and memories as Reiga are sealed away until his physical body could withstand the strain of all his power.  He also tells Yuki that he performed a forbidden ritual that allowed him to take a Duras into his body. Because of this he, unlike the Zweilt Guardians, has not been reincarnated. Instead he has lived for over a thousand years, remembering everything, including how the war with Reiga first began. He also heals almost immediately after being injured. He believes that in order to win the war, there have to be sacrifices. He possesses a grimoire (the Book of Solomon) much like Kanata, although his is red.  He is also the one responsible for continually causing Yuki and the Zweilts to reincarnate so they can continue fighting Reiga. He apologizes for lying to Yuki, telling him that he is not really Yuki's brother, but Yuki forgives him, telling him that despite that, Takashiro is still very important to him.

Then he shows him the monument that has all the names of the Zweilts that have died.  They see Kuroto and Yuki starts talking to him.  He asks him to play a game of shogi with him but Kuroto gets upset with him and says, "I told you I'm never going to play again!" and leaves.  While in the hall we see Senshiro has been eavesdropping and he pins Kuroto against the wall and says, "why don't you play with him?"

It's night time and Yuki is watching the moon with Sodom when he sees Kuruto.  They decide to play a game of shogi which Kuruto wins though he's very impressed with how Yuki plays.  Then he explains about his background and how he first met Senshiro.  We learn that Senshirou's grandfather was killed by the Opast Cadenza while protecting him and Kuroto.  We find out Kuroto's first partner was also killed by Cadenza and left Kuroto alive.

Senshirou is finally able to wear the Zwelt ring which symbolizes that Kuroto has accepted him as his new partner.  He is Tsubaki's fiance by an arranged marriage decided by the family and decided to become a zweilt after his grandfather was killed by the Opast Cadenza while protecting him and Kuroto.  He broke up with Tsubaki because he says she deserves someone who can put her first.

Yuki has some tender moments with his newly found out aunts Tsubaki Shikibe and Ibuki Shikibe on his mother's side.  He is also given a picture of his mom (she's very pretty).

There is also a story about a girl possessed by a demon fox spirit who wants revenge against the man who killed her sister.  Senshiro exorcises her.

Meanwhile back at the Twilight Mansion the other Zwelts are missing Yuki.

My Review:

In this volume we learn more about Celty's background about how she lost her head.  She has sensed her head is in Tokyo but even with the help of her unconventional doctor friend she hasn't been able to locate it.

Two people are kidnapped and tortured to find out who they are working for.  One guy is asked to pick a manga and his kidnappers will torture him the same way as described in the manga.  He picks an issue of Black Butler and he is about to get his eyes drilled but they are interrupted (it would have happened) by another one of their gang members.  He finds out he is being held by the Dollars Gang which is the deadliest ones around and no one knows who their leader is and seem them.

Mikado Ryūgamine is walking with one of his friends when they see Anri Sonohara being harassed by a group of girls.  They hide behind a corner of a store and watch what happens.  Then all of a sudden Izaya Orihara appears behind Mikado and talks to him.   We see Anri still being harassed when Izaya grabs the bully leader's phone and smashes it.  She is in shock but is unable to move and finally leaves.  Izaya is moving towards Mikado when all of a sudden a refrigerator is thrown at Izaya and hits him.  


Then we see are introduced to Shizuo Heiwajima who starts to fight with Izaya.  They are in a grabbing match when all of a sudden an object is thrown at Mikado and he is saved by another man Simon Brezhnev.  Then Shizuo and Simon start fighting and Izaya escapes.  Meanwhile Mikado and his friend have escaped to a restaurant and start talking.

This volume has a lot of violence and really crazy and psychotic characters.

My Review:

Storyline:  It has been seven years since Lucy Kincaid met an online predator who seemed nice.  When they finally met he turned out to be a sadistic psychopath who enjoyed raping and killing women live for money (see Fear No Evil).  He savagely attacked her but she lived and killed him.  Since they attack she is determined to become an FBI agent and never letting that happen to another women.  She has been accepted to the FBI Academy.

While she is waiting Noah Armstrong her mentor asks her to help him investigate the murder of a high-priced call girl Wendy James linked to Congressman Crowley.  Noah's boss Supervisory Special Agent Matt Slater is angered when Lucy voices her findings about the murder scene and he doesn't want an untrained FBI wannable in the field.  She is reassigned to another case the murders of several call girls and a social worker and she figures out they are linked to the Wendy James murder.  With the help of her private investigator boyfriend Sean Rogan Lucy must figure out the connection between Ivy before the killers murder the both of them.

Characters:  This book is a thrilling action packed mystery which is non stop from beginning to end.  Lucy has grown a lot since her attack by sharpening her strong instincts but lacks confidence in her abilities and skills.

I really loved how Lucy was more vocal about her opinions in this book and didn't let anyone bring her down.  She was spot on about her findings and how each case were linked together.  Really enjoyed her rapport with Ivy and how she could relate to her.

Romance:  I also love how her relationship with Sean is moving ahead to the next step and how they support each other.  I love how Sean is very protective and jealous of Noah (we get his POV) - I'm waiting for them to have a knock out match!

Villain(s):  The villain(s) were very sadistic in their kills and had no remorse (it was all a game to them and they had no emotion).  It didn't matter who they killed as long as it showed Ivy that they can find you anywhere and what would happen to her once they found her.

My Review:

The book opens in 1651 when Hope Matthews is 14 years old and she is rescued by a soldier from being stomped by horses as they rode in a parade.  He brings her to the gate and then gives her a half-crown to buy another pair of shoes.  She believes her knight in shining armor will rescue her from this life she has.  She returns home and her worst nightmare has come true her mother has auction her off.

Now it's 1662 and Captain Robert Nichols has lost his lands and his sister was killed tragically.  He is on the verge of getting his revenge on the last man responsible. 

Hope has had two lovers before becoming King Charles Stuart's high ranking Mistress.  He is about to marry his Portuguese wife but knows it's inappropriate to have his mistress living at Court so he devises a solution.  He will marry off Hope to a titled man and she will live at his estate for a few months and then he will recall her back to court with her husband so they can continue their arrangement.  He summons Captain Robert Nichols to court and presents his solution he will allow him back his lands if he marries Hope and title or he will lose Cressly Manor his family's to his sworn enemy who was responsible for his tragedy.

The marriage takes place at the May Day celebration with a clueless Hope (who has organized this event for Charles ) and reluctant Captain Robert Nichols and the marriage begins with a rocky start.

I really did feel the heat between Hope and the Captain but it lacked the chemistry/connection at first.  The sex scenes didn't feel like they had any meaning just to slake their lusts.

Book that Thing!

 

Hello my lovelies! I’m a 24 year old student / teacher in training from Germany and have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. Why, oh why did it take me so long to discover the greatness that is blogging? I really don’t know. Slap me upside the head, would ya! The book blogger community is awesome. I only read English books and for the longest time shied away from writing any reviews. Two months ago I decided to just do it. It was time for me to get a grip. My blog is still a newborn and all about the reviews. I post ~ three per week. Sharing my thoughts with other book lovers is so much fun!

My favorite thriller of 2011 is The Hunter (UK) by Tom Wood. However, I’m a romance kinda girl! Pnr, Ya, Erotica, Historical… bring it on. My favorite romance books are: The Play by Play series by Jaci Burton, the Fifty Shades book(s) by E. L. James, the I-Team series by Pamela Claire… Too many fantastic reads out there to list them all. I’m currently reading Die For Me by Amy Plum.

Now, a bit about myself? I’m addicted to coffee, love my dreadlocks, my bestie and I are attached at the hip, music makes my heart grow fonder, I love open-minded people, and can be on the impatient side.

Hi! My name is Laura and I have been reading since before I could walk. Probably. I have always loved to read, and would actually get grounded from books because there was nothing else my mom could take away that would be seen as punishment, because then I would just go sit in my room and read. She still feels guilty about that!

I currently live in Florida with my fiance, 3 dogs, and a cat. I work with dogs, so the occasional post might be a funny story about a dog, but mostly its books. I like Paranormal/Fantasy/Sci-fi books. My theory is I am reading to escape, so why on earth would I want to read about something that actually happened?

Q: Have you had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then "broke up" with later on in either the series or a stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her.

Yes I would have to say Anita Blake.  In the earlier books she was a kick ass heroine and then the master vampire seduced her then she gained the ardeur which makes her have to have sex at inconvenient times and frequently or else it will suck the life out of her special circle.  Now she is having sex with strangers. adding them to her harem and it was pretty icky when she did it with a teenager (16 yrs. old).


I'm eagerly awaiting "Kiss the Dead" to be released June 5, 2012.

Also the Stephanie Plum series. In the earlier books she was in a relationship with Joe Morelli and now she's in a on-again/off-again relationship. During the off-again time she sleeps with Ranger but in the last two books she's sleeping with both of them.

My Review:

Sue Ann Thompson was the happily married friend of Jenny from One Reckless Summer so I was very surprised she is the heroine of this story.

Sue Ann's husband Jeff has left her for another woman who he quickly married and now wants children.  She decides to take some time by herself at a remote cabin when her ex-husband's best friend Adam Becker arrives saying it's his cabin for the whole week.  Sue and Adam have been friends since childhood but it takes a night snowed in for them to see each other in a new light.

Adam Becker is in a grouchy mood because his ex-wife's parents have taken his boys for the whole month of December.  Instead of taken out his frustrations on his workers he heads up to the cabin he rents every year.  He never expected to find Sue in the cabin but it's a nice surprise since they have always been friends.

They are still attracted to each other back in town but Sue Ann is wary about starting another relationship with another man especially one connected to her ex Jeff.  Adam is willing to do anything to convince Sue to change her mind but he is torn when Jeff asks him to be a character witness in his petition to stop paying alimony to Sue.  She is hurt that he would consider testifying and he is keeping an enormous secret about why his marriage dissolved.

I really liked Adam except when he was snapping at his workers but I'm glad he realized that he was in the wrong and made it up to them with Christmas gifts.  I really liked him with Sue though at times she was irritating when she was pushing him away.  He's a man of action by making Sue's daughter Christmas wish come true, dressing up as Santa, pretending to be a reindeer and he's a very nice guy.

The conflict between Jenny and Mick was very interesting because Jenny knew at the beginning that Mick didn't want children.  At first she wasn't interested in children but seeing Sue with her daughter she really wants one now knowing how Mick feels.  I thought the outcome was resolved very quickly and I don't know if that would happen in real life.

My Review:

The Consortium failed in their plan to infiltrate A-Tac but they managed to leave Jason Lawton dead. Hannah Marshall A-Tac's Intelligence specialist mourns the death of her friend but has a mission dedicated to her fallen comrade. She poses as the inheritor of a valuable art collection including a Monet painting Le Jardin lost in WW II that she wants to sell to Alain DuBois who is tied to the Consortium in Montreal.  What they didn't kow was it was a trap when DuBois is killed and Hannah and her teammates including new member Harrison Blake are fortunate to escape with their lives as the Consortium blows up his estate.

When Hannah returns to Sunderland College Tina Richards her grad student assistant shows her a disturbing video sent to her e-mail showing a man torturing a girl who is tied up on a bed.  Soon after a fellow team member Avery informs them Sara Lauter a student is missing.  They soon realize both cases are related and the torture murder reminds Harrison of the death of his twin sister Eileen by the killer known as the Cyber Killer since he sent e-mails before his kills.

Harrison Blake is the new member of the team who brings a vast amount of experience to the team since he's a former FBI agent, he use to work for the Last Chance organization and his great computer expertise.  He and Hannah are work friends but as they dig deeper into the case they become lovers.  Both have experienced tragedies in their lives - Hannah was abused in her childhood and learned to cope with the pain and keeps people away from her - Blake feels guilty that he wasn't able to save his sister from the Cyber Killer who raped, tortured and then killed her.

This was a thrilling fast paced romantic suspense with twists and turns and very sadistic villains.  The killings are pretty graphic.

My Review:

Four wives go on a trip to Monte Carlo on a Girl's Weekend to have fun by gambling and partying and to escape their abusive and unfaithful distant husbands.  Serena Schofield, a former U.S. Champion skier and  she is the one paying the bill for this weekend. Her husband provides for her but it really is a loveless marriage. Bryah Gordon, born in Johannesburg but her husband is very controlling and sometimes is physically abusive so this is her first ever weekend away with just the girls. Winnie Brookes, an exotic Brit, beautiful inside as well as out. Her husband was in British Intelligence for years and now works at the British Embassy in Bern. Finally there is Abbie Elliot, her husband is a diplomat at the U.S. Embassy in Bern.

They all have fun gambling at the casinos, dancing at the clubs, eating exotic food, drinking expensive liquor, hanging around pools and attracting attention from gorgeous men.

The next morning they wake up on a yacht surrounded by police and arrested for an unspeakable crime they didn't commit.

I really did enjoy the premise of the storyline but some parts were really hard to stomach (ex: jail torture and rape) because they were quite graphic and horrible.

The heroine of this story is about Abbie who endures tons of abuse and torture which helps in her character development.
