MT Review: Never Look Back (Hardcover)

I've finished "Never Look Back" by Clare Donoghue.

In Never Look Back, three young women have been found brutally murdered in south London, their bodies discarded in plain view, the victims only yards away from help during each attack. And each time, the murderer gets a little bit bolder.

Detective Inspector Mike Lockyer is the head of homicide on the South London police force, and with three bodies on his watch and a killer growing in confidence, he and DS Jane Bennett are frantically trying to find the link between these seemingly isolated incidents. Slowly, the case is also invading Lockyer’s life outside the office, and the fact that his daughter matches the victim profile is putting a painful strain on their already fragile relationship.

Meanwhile, Sarah Grainger has a shadowy stalker following her every move. Once an outgoing London photographer, Sarah has begun locking herself away, almost too afraid to leave the house. Now her stalker’s actions are escalating. He’s desperate to tell Sarah a secret - a secret that Lockyer needs to know.

No Job for a Lady (Hardcover)

I've finished "No Job for a Lady" by Carol McCleary.

History, mystery, and murder are the traveling companions of Nellie Bly, the world’s first female investigative reporter. In Carol McCleary's No Job for a Lady, Nellie defies the wrath of her editor and vengeful ancient gods while setting out to prove a woman has what it takes to be a foreign correspondent in dangerous Victorian times.

Pyramids, dark magic, and dead bodies are what the intrepid Nellie encounters when she takes off for Mexico after her editor refuses to let her work as a foreign correspondent because “it’s no job for a lady.”

It’s 1886 and Mexico has not cast off all its bloodthirsty Aztec past. Among the towering pyramids in the ghost city of Teotihuacán, Nellie is stalked by ruthless killers seeking Montezuma’s legendary treasure and an ancient cult that resorts to the murderous Way of the Aztec to protect it.

Nellie travels with Gertrude Bell, who will go on to be called Queen of the Desert for her later exploits in Egypt, as well as the most glamorous and beautiful woman of the era, Lily Langtry, consort to the Prince of Wales. Along for the ride is a young gunfighter called the Sundance Kid. And there’s the mysterious Roger Watkins, who romantically and physically challenges Nellie’s determination to be an independent woman in a man’s world.

About the Author

CAROL MCCLEARY was born in Seoul, South Korea, and lived in Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines. She now lives on Cape Cod in an antique house that is haunted by ghosts. McCleary is the author of The Alchemy of Murder, The Illusion of Murder, and The Formula for Murder.

Bunny Express Saturday 2014 (Jun 28)

Bunny Express Saturday is hosted every Saturday at Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews.

I received these in the mail this week.

For Review:

From New York Times bestselling author Kate White comes a riveting psychological suspense in which a media star must battle a malevolent enemy who may be disturbingly close to her.

After losing her on-air job two years ago, television host Robin Trainer has fought her way back and now she’s hotter than ever. With her new show climbing in the ratings and her first book a bestseller, she’s being dubbed a media double threat.

But suddenly, things begin to go wrong. Small incidents at first: a nasty note left in her purse; her photo shredded. But the obnoxious quickly becomes threatening when the foundation the makeup artist uses burns Robin’s face. It wasn’t an accident — someone had deliberately doctored with the product.

An adversary with a dark agenda wants to hurt Robin, and the clues point to someone she works with every day. While she frantically tries to put the pieces together and unmask this hidden foe, it becomes terrifyingly clear that the person responsible isn’t going to stop until Robin loses everything that matters to her including her life.

As Shin and Chae-Kyung try to pick up the pieces of their marriage in the wake of learning the truth behind their divorce, Yul is far from content to hang his head in defeat. Postponing his plans to study abroad, he positions himself near Chae-Kyung by taking classes at her school and even resorts to teaming up with the heartbroken Hyo-Rin to blackmail the former crown princess. But when Shin happens upon evidence of his cousin's newfound treachery, will Yul's plotting blow up in his face?

Jessica Lemmon The Millionaire Affair Blog Tour with a Review

I am so excited to have M.D. Waters here at Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews with a Book Spotlight and Excerpt.

Thanks Jessica and Hachette Book Group for allowing me to join your  Blog Tour!

Please take it away, Jessica!

Millionaire ad executive Landon Downey has a policy: no romantic relationships allowed. So when he's saddled with his six-year-old nephew for a week, he doesn't think twice about asking a female friend to act as live-in nanny. What he doesn't expect is the palpable attraction to the woman he hasn't seen in sixteen years. And not only does she like him back, she suggests they work their way down a list of extracurricular activities in the bedroom. How can he resist? Kimber Reynolds knows what she's doing. Sort of. Tired of every failed attempt to turn her past relationships into her own happily-ever-afters, she's determined to prove once and for all that she can love em and leave em with the best of them. All she has to do is keep her heart out of the agreement she's made with the man she's crushed on for a decade and a half. No problem. Their string-free arrangement turns downright stringy when Landon starts to feel more for the redhead than good old fashioned lust, and Kimber has a scare involving a plastic stick and one-or-more blue lines. With the pressure mounting and their hearts involved, will these two be able to keep their original promise and walk away from one another?

About Jessica Lemmon:

Jessica Lemmon has always been a dreamer. At some point, she decided head-in-the-clouds thinking was childish, went out, and got herself a job and then she got another one because that one was lousy. And when that one stopped being fulfilling, she went out and got another and another. Soon it became apparent she'd only be truly happy doing what she loved. And since "eating potato chips" isn't a viable career, she opted to become a writer. With fire in her heart, she dusted off a book she'd started years prior, finished it, and submitted it. It may have been the worst book ever, but it didn't stop her from writing another one. Now she has several books finished, several more started, and even more marinating in her brain (which currently resides in the clouds, thankyouverymuch), and she couldn't be happier. She firmly believes God gifts us with talents for a purpose, and with His help, you can create the life you want. (While eating potato chips.)

If you are new to the FF fun, Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop that expands your blog following by a joint effort between bloggers. Feature & Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, myself of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Now to make this FF interesting we do a FEATURE blogger. If you are interested in becoming a Feature click on the drop down link above FEATURES and Features and Follow Friday and get on the waiting list!  It is also required, that if you participate you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee and Alison Can Read) and the two Feature blogs.

Fandomly Bookish

1. When did you start blogging?

I actually started blogging around 2010, I think. But it wasn’t the kind of blogging that I’m doing now. It was for a fansite called So, I was just dealing with updates and uploading HQ photos only. With this one, Fandomly Bookish, I have this blog since 2012 but just made it fully active last year.

2. What is your favorite part of book blogging?

The community itself, the authors, bloggers and readers! I love them and it’s so much fun interacting with them. I get to share my thoughts about a certain book to everyone and people could throw in their comments about it too, or even find a way to fangirl with me! Plus, there’s just so many cool stuff happening around our community everyday!

3. What type of books do you mainly blog about?

Young Adult and New Adult books!

4. What is your favorite book(s)?

Oh dear. I’ve got loads of favorite books and series! I’ll probably tire you out with my list but I’ll just do a quick rundown

1.  The Mortal Instruments Series and The Infernal Devices Trilogy by Cassandra Clare
2.  Colleen Hoover books
3.  Making Faces by Amy Harmon
4.  Abbi Glines books 5. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (You can stop by my blog for my full list of favorite books, though.)

5. What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

Hmmm the best thing would probably be that I gained a lot of friends (from across the globe) when I started book blogging! Seriously, even my personal Facebook accounts is filled with book readers! Then every now and then I get a message from them asking for recommendations on what to read next and all those bookish questions. *happy dance* Always happy to help them!

Our Feature - Vicki @ Lilmissvix Reads

1. When did you start blogging?

I started blogging last December. I graduated from university with an English Lit and History degree last summer, and after leaving I found it odd no longer writing about the books that I was reading. I found myself keeping notes, which gradually turned into reviews, and the idea of starting a book blog just popped into my head one day. Little did I know that there was this whole crazy world of fellow book bloggers just waiting to be discovered!

2. What is your favorite part of book blogging?

Meeting like-minded people. Not many of my friends and family read, and so blogging is the perfect way to talk about the books that I love.

3. What type of books do you mainly blog about?

Mainly historical/contemporary romance and YA/NA fiction, but I'm happy to read and blog about pretty much anything!

4. What are your favorite books?

This is an impossible question! I love Elizabeth Chadwick's historical fiction, and Anthony Horowitz is another favourite author. I love classic authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Bronté sisters too.

5. What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

It's got to be the free books right? The postman must laugh to himself at how excited I get when he brings a parcel for me! Knowing that you're getting to read them before everybody else is an added bonus too.

Question of the Week: Post a photo of your favorite coffee mug (or mugs if you can’t choose just one).

M.D. Waters Prototype Blog Tour with Review

I am so excited to have M.D. Waters here at Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews with a Book Spotlight and Excerpt.

Thanks M.D. and Penguin Canada for allowing me to join your Prototype Blog Tour!

Please take it away, M.D.!

About MD Waters

M.D. WATERS lives with her family in Maryland. Archetype, February 6, 2014 from Dutton Books, is her first novel. Its sequel, Prototype, will be published July 24, 2014.

Agent: Jennifer Weltz

Publicist: Liza Cassity

The stunning debut that began with Archetype — and has readers buzzing — concludes in Prototype, when a woman’s dual pasts lock onto a collision course, threatening her present and future.

Emma looks forward to the day when she can let go of her past — both of them. After more than a year on the run, with clues to her parents’ whereabouts within her grasp, she may finally find a place to settle down. Start a new life. Maybe even create new memories with a new family.

But the past rises to haunt her and to make sure there’s nowhere on the planet she can hide. Declan Burke wants his wife back, and with a little manipulation and a lot of reward money, he’s got the entire world on his side. Except for the one man she dreads confronting the most: Noah Tucker.

Emma returns to face what she’s done but finds that the past isn’t the problem. It’s the present — and the future it represents. Noah has moved on and another woman is raising their daughter.

In the shocking conclusion to M.D. Waters’s spectacular debut, Emma battles for her life and her freedom, tearing down walls and ripping off masks to reveal the truth. She’s decided to play their game and prove she isn’t the woman they thought she was. Even if it means she winds up dead. Or worse, reborn.

My Review:

Emma is a 26 year old woman who wakes up in a hospital bed with no memories.  She learns that a hundred years ago a war broke out with women in the west are free to live their life while women who live in the east are very rare. Women are only considered worth marrying if they are fertile and men are desperate to claim and manipulate them.

She allows her husband to mold her into the perfect wife and even falls in love with him.  Soon she is dreaming about another man who isn't her husband and when he finally stands in front of her she starts questioning her life.

I really admire Emma's determination to find out the truth about her life and to find her birth parents.

I recommend this dark, high octave action book with an unforgettable heroine.

She grew up wealthy and privileged in a tony Connecticut town, opened her own gallery in New York City, and is about to make art world history displaying previously unknown works by a prominent twentieth-century painter. No wonder she possesses a can-do attitude that can’t be soured. Ford Sinclair is another story. While Ford is confounded by Carly’s unflappable good cheer, he can’t help being drawn to her. And undaunted by Ford’s restless heart, Carly sees a man worth caring for. But when a late-night phone call sends Ford back to Africa, Carly’s left to wonder if the pull of the past and its ghosts will prove stronger than the promise of their future together.

New Releases 2014 (Jun 24)

New Releases

Karin Slaughter, author of the New York Times bestselling Will Trent novels, is widely acclaimed as “one of the best crime novelists in America” (The Washington Post). Now she delivers her first stand-alone novel: an epic story of a city in the midst of seismic upheaval, a serial killer targeting cops, and a divided police force tasked with bringing a madman to justice.

Atlanta, 1974: As a brutal murder and a furious manhunt rock the city’s police department, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the job will also be her last. She’s determined to defy her privileged background by making her own way — wearing a badge and carrying a gun. But for a beautiful young woman, life will be anything but easy in the macho world of the Atlanta PD, where even the female cops have little mercy for rookies. It’s also the worst day possible to start given that a beloved cop has been gunned down, his brothers in blue are out for blood, and the city is on the edge of war.

Kate isn’t the only woman on the force who’s feeling the heat. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes. When she and Kate, her new partner, are pushed out of the citywide search for a cop killer, their fury, pain, and pride finally reach the boiling point. With a killer poised to strike again, they will pursue their own line of investigation, risking everything as they venture into the city’s darkest heart.

Relentlessly paced, acutely observed, wickedly funny, and often heartbreaking, Cop Town is Karin Slaughter’s most powerful novel yet — a tour de force of storytelling from our foremost master of character, atmosphere, and suspense.

Only Killing Stops The Pain

Callie Cantrell has only fragmented memories of the car accident that killed her husband and son. One year later, she's still trying to start over, yet she can't shake her unease. Especially when former LA cop West Laughlin barges into her life, searching for his young nephew. At first he thinks Callie's lying about who she is and what she knows. But soon it's clear that Callie and West are linked by a killer who has bent others to his twisted will. The worst night of Callie's life was just the beginning of his vengeance. And when her turn comes again there will be no escape.

New York Times bestselling author Brenda Joyce takes you back to the Highlands, where the battle for land, liberty and love rages on.

A bastard daughter, Alana was cast away at birth and forgotten by her mighty Comyn family. Raised in solitude by her grandmother, she has remained at a safe distance from the war raging through Scotland. But when a battle comes close to home and she finds herself compelled to save an enemy warrior from death, her own life is thrown into danger.

Scott Grant has a bustling family practice in the small Oregon community of Thunder Point.
