RS Review: Heron's Cove (Sharpe & Donovan) [Hardcover]

I've finished "Heron's Cove" the 2nd book in her Sharpe and Donovan series by Carla Neggers.

Product Description

When your safety depends on living a lie

After escaping certain death, deep-cover agent Colin Donovan is back home on the Maine coast with his new love, FBI art crimes expert Emma Sharpe. Then Tatiana Pavlova, a London-based jewelry designer, arrives in Heron's Cove, asking for Emma's help — a prized collection from a lost era of Russian opulence, decadence and rare beauty has resurfaced, and Tatiana warns Emma it's about to be stolen again. And Colin realizes his nightmare isn't over. It's just begun.

And everyone you love is a target
Emma guards her past closely, and Colin is determined to unlock her secrets. As they investigate the mysterious collection and the equally mysterious Tatiana, they confront their greatest challenge. Now they must count on their expertise — and each other — to outwit an enemy who wants to destroy them and everyone they love most.

Who can you afford to trust?

My Review:

FBI agent Colin Donovan is deep undercover and he realizes his cover is blown. He barely escapes with his life when the calvary arrives.

FBI agent Emma Sharpe a former nun and has ties to her family's business Sharpe's Fine Art Recovery is enjoying whiskey tasting with Colin's three brother's and his priest friend Father Finian Bracken at Hurley's in Rock Point Maine. She gets a call from a long time trusted contact that her man is in trouble and the address. She places a call to her boss Matt Yankowski to secure Colin's escape.
Russian billionaire Dmitri Rusakov with his trusted security friend Ivan Alexander arrive in Heron's Cove bringing trouble with them. Also mysterious Tatiana Pavlova, a London-based jewelry designer, arrives in Heron's Cove, asking for Emma's help — a prized collection from a lost era of Russian opulence, decadence and rare beauty has resurfaced, and Tatiana warns Emma it's about to be stolen again.

I really like Emma and Colin together because they understand each other though I wish they would talk to each other instead of getting upset or getting frustrated then walk away.

I really enjoyed the art aspect and I really like how Ivan cares about Emma and would make sure nothing happened to her.

Cold Dawn [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Cold Dawn" the 3rd book in her Black Falls series by Carla Neggers.

Product Description

The small town of Black Falls, Vermont, finally feels safe again — until search-and-rescue expert Rose Cameron discovers a body, burnt almost beyond recognition. Almost. Rose is certain that she knows the victim's identity…and that his death was no accident.

Nick Martini also suspects an arsonist's deliberate hand. Another fire killed an arson investigator in California months ago. Now the rugged smoke jumper is determined to follow the killer's trail…even if it leads straight to Rose. Nick and Rose haven't seen each other since they shared a single night of blind passion, but they can't let memories and unhealed wounds get in the way of their common goal — stopping a merciless killer from taking aim straight at the heart of Black Falls.

My Review:

I highly recommend this series if you like great characters and gripping and horrific deaths, etc.

Storyline: The small town of Black Falls, Vermont, finally feels safe again — until search-and-rescue expert Rose Cameron discovers a body, burnt almost beyond recognition.

Characters:   We get to meet some of the characters from both of the other books in the series. The Cameron's, The Harpers, the Neal's, an ex-NAVY SEAL (Grit), an ex-reporter (Meryl)  and Nick the best friend of Sean Cameron. Nick is ruggedly handsome, a multi-millionaire, a smoke jumper and business partner with Rose's brother Sean.  He comes to Vermont to find who killed his friend an arson investigator earlier in the series and spent a night of passion with Rose one time in California.

Rose is the younger sister of TJ, Elijah and Sean beautiful, a loner, a search and rescue expert with her dog Ranger.  She slept with Nick in California, made some terrible mistakes and finds a dead body (burnt) of someone she knows.  The body happens to be Derek Cutshaw a guy she had a couple of dates with.

Romance:  You can really see and feel the sparks between Rose and Nick.  Glad that the romance didn't resume until near the end and they got to know each other better and realize they were in love.  Everytime they were on the same page I swear the pages were going to go up in flames.

Killer:  The killer is ruthless and a sociopath who is a serial arsonist and part of a network of killers.  The killer is quite brutal in their killings and kills anyone that gets in their way.

My Review:

Storyline:  I really enjoyed reading the continuing storyline of who/why killed the Cameron siblings father from the first book in the series "Cold Pursuit".

Characters:  I thought all the characters are well written and you can imagine knowing them in real life.

Romance:  I enjoyed the romance between Hannah and Sean because they also have a love-hate relationship since the teenage years (though they didn't know it).  They love to torment each other to deny they are attracted to each other!

Glad to see Jo and Elijah are still together and engaged!

Killer(s):  The killer is well written and you can see why he will kill and the way he acts in public and private.

The Widow (Hardcover)

I've finished reading "The Widow" the 1st book in her BPD-FBI series by Carla Neggers.

Product Description

From New York Times bestselling author Carla Neggers comes the gripping story of one woman's determination to solve the unsolvable case: her husband's murder.

Four days after Abigail Browning's wedding, her life changed in a way she never expected: her husband was shot, meeting his death along the rocky Mount Desert Island coast. Was it a random act of violence, or could someone have wanted Christopher dead?

That's the question that has haunted Abigail, now a homicide detective, for the past seven years. As determined as ever to find her husband's killer, she returns to the foggy Maine island -- and the home she has inherited there -- after receiving an anonymous tip. Is it just another false lead by someone looking for attention? Or can she finally prove that his death was tied to something that happened that night . . . and that he was murdered?

As the search-and-rescue worker who located Chris too late to save him, Owen Garrison still carries guilt from that fateful night. Constantly on the go as an expert in his field, he's back in Maine for the summer. Right from the start, Abigail's presence ruffles feathers among the islanders. Owen sees she's not the same woman she was seven years ago. As he helps her unravel the mystery, they learn that the layers of deceit and lies are even thicker than they could have imagined.

They're convinced that Chris was killed because he got too close to the truth and that the danger he faced isn't in the past -- it's here and now. And it's up to Abigail and Owen to keep pushing for the truth . . . to stop a killer from striking again . . .

About the Author

Carla Neggers is the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Sky, The Rapids and Night's Landing. She lives with her family in Vermont, not far from picturesque Quechee Gorge.

My Review:

Storyline:  There were more than one storyline in this book and the first one was who killed Chris on his wedding night and why?  The second was who knocked out Abigail and stole her grandmother's necklace.  The third was why did Owen's sister jump off the cliff?

Characters:  I thought all the characters were well written and you could tell their personalities.

Romance:  I loved the romance between Abigail and Owen because they are both stubborn, strong-willed and good looking people, loners, etc.  Their romance was slow but at a good pace and they were taking it in stride.

Killer(s):  Actually there was one killer but some red herrings making you think it's this person then this person.  You didn't find out who the killer was until the very end but I figured out maybe about half way.

The Angel (Hardcover)

I've finished "The Angel" the 2nd book in her BPD-FBI series / Boston, Maine, Ireland series by Carla Neggers.

Product Description

Her passion for myth and magic leads a woman into the heart of a murderous evil

On a remote stretch of the rugged coast of Ireland, folklorist and illustrator Keira Sullivan pursues the mysterious Irish legend of an ancient Celtic stone angel. As she searches an isolated ruin, she's certain she's discovered the mythic angel, but before she can examine her find, she senses a malevolent presence...Is someone in there with her? Then the ruin collapses, trapping her.

Keira's uncle, a Boston homicide detective, enlists the help of Simon Cahill to find his missing niece. Simon, an expert with Fast Rescue, a rapid response search-and-rescue organization, is trying to keep a low profile after secretly assisting the take-down of a major criminal network, but he rushes to Ireland, pulling Keira out of the rubble just as she's about to free herself.

Simon isn't interested in myths or magic, nor is he surprised when Keira can't find a trace of her stone angel. He doesn't believe it exists. But the gruesome evidence of a startling act of violence convinces him that whatever she found in the ruin, the danger she faces is real.

When the violence follows them to Boston [and escalates], Simon and Keira realize that the long-forgotten story that has captivated her has also aroused a killer...a calculating predator who will certainly kill again.

Suspenseful and evocative, THE ANGEL is a riveting novel of dangerous myths, haunting secrets and the shattering truth concealed within them. It is Carla Neggers at her best.

My Review:

Storyline: There were two storylines and the first one was who was killing certain people and why? The second one was who was after Keira and why?

Characters: The characters were well written and you get to know them and care for them. You also find what motivates them to do what they do and why! Keira is a take charge and don't mess around with me kind of women, who isn't afraid to dance to her own drum. Simon is a a big brute of a man but caring and protective who doesn't want to see Keira get hurt and I'm glad that he took the time to ease Keira into a relationship.

Romance: I loved the romance between Keira and Simon right from the get go because they are both attracted to each other and it's fun to see a big brute of a man falling for a women who dances to her own drum!

Killer(s): The main killers were both mentally unstable and they were quite vicious and cruel in their killings.  Interesting to see what happens in ritual killings!

My Review:

Very fast paced and really sexly charged!  I highly recommend reading this book if you like romantic suspense!

Elijah and Jo are great together and how can you resist their sexly charged romantic banter?  (I will quote some lines later on tonight or tomorrow)!

Elijah loves to call Jo "Sweetpea" and he is always confusing her with his come ons.  They have a love-hate relationship since childhood.
