FACE VALUE by Gregory Landsman

Q1. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO DO THE WORK THAT YOU DO?

I feel inspired to find as many ways as I can to share a message about how to counteract premature skin agingand feel good in our skin at the same time,because there are so many misconceptions about beauty, aging and skin care that continue tocreateunnecessary stress and confusion.

The greatest of these myths is the belief that looking younger cost a lot of money, when in fact it is the exact opposite;the ability to look our best at every age is accessible to everyone. With the right knowledge and knowhow we can all counteract premature skin aging and look healthier and youngerwith ingredients from the kitchen that cost next to nothing!

Q2. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION TO PREMATURE SKIN AGING?

Premature skin aging is commonly brought on by skin stress. If you are stressed, so is your skin!

But skin stress is caused by a number of factorson a daily basis including environmental toxins and lifestyle elements – all of which age the skin prematurely.

Environmental elements that damage the skin include exposure to sun, pollution, heating and cooling.

Lifestyle elements that damage the skin include the chemicals in food, toxins in household products, some of the chemicals in personal care products such as shampoo and soap, smoking, alcohol and sugar consumption.

And then there is the stress that we feel which causes the body to release the stress hormone cortisol. I call cortisol the wrinkle-causing hormonebecauseit is so damaging to our collagen. When we live in a constant state of stress, cortisol levels in the body don't get the opportunity to recede and this causes premature skin aging.That is why I firmly believe that we cannot separate how we look from how we feel.

So to keep ourselves looking our best over time we need to de-stress the skin so it ages less! This can be done by feeding the skin nutrients to counteract skin stress and rebuild and protect thecollagen and elastin that keeps skin looking young and vital. We also need to do everything we can to feel good on a daily basis, as good feelings support great looking skin.

Q3. CAN NUTRIENTS BE ABSORBED EFFECTIVELY THROUGH THE SKIN IN A WAY THAT SUPPORTS YOUNGER, HEALTHIER LOOKING SKIN?

Research has shown that nutrients can be absorbed effectively through the skin.This means that your beauty routine will not only give you great skin, but can assist in absorbing some of the necessary nutrients for overall health.

Some of the benefits of using natural products topically on the skin include:

• Tightening and toning the skin;

• Rehydrating skin;

• Restoringthe natural pH levels of the skin;

• Reducing skin inflammation;

• Soothing and healing sore or sun burnt skin;

• Cleansingthe skin with ingredients that carry natural antibacterial properties; and

• Feeding the skin the some of the most powerful anti-aging products on record including Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Retin A, powerful antioxidants, collagen producing Vitamin C and skin healing Vitamin E - the key regenerative ingredients found in the most expensive skin creams.

The even better news is that you can achieve comparable doses of these skin revitalising ingredients naturally through regular use of the recipes in Face Value.

So when I say DIY - this isn’t just do it yourself, it’s do it yourself for great results!

The act of putting what the earth has grown on our skin is one of the most powerful ways to heal, nourish and transform it.

Gregory Landsman

Q4. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT NATURAL CAN DELIVER THE RESULTS THAT CHEMICALS CAN?

Ironically a number of thechemicals found in skincare are considered toxins that stress the skin and contribute to skin aging.

The beauty of natural products and formulas is that they are pure and so the skin is not struggling to overcome the impact of chemicals. This is why many skin crèmes feel good when you put them on, but they ultimately don't do much that makes a difference to your skin.

So if you would like to stop skin aging prematurely and give it back its healthy youthful glow, then the right natural ingredients can make the difference.

But we need to keep in mind that looking younger over a lifetime requires us to make small changes to what we put on our skin, what we feed it with the foods we eat and how we support ourselves to feel good in our skin.

Q4. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU NOT ONLY WRITE BOOKS BUT YOU FIND OTHER WAYS TO SHARE YOUR MESSAGE ABOUT HOW TO COUNTERACT PREMATURE SKIN AGING AND LOOK YOUNGER NATURALLY?

My greatest wish is for everyone to know their true value as human beings and to have equal access to the knowledge and know how that let’s them live their best lives.

I write books; I host a TV show called Face Lifting Food that is shown globally and in universities; I developed Face Lifting Food Apps for everyday use; and recently I released DIY Face Lifting Food Skin Treatments online to address specific skin challenges using ingredients from the kitchen.

So that regardless of whether you are online, a TV watcher or someone who loves books, you can affordably access the best science-based information to keep your skin looking healthier and younger at any age;counteract premature skin aging; and support you to feel good in your skin.

Q.5 HOW DID YOUR EARLY EXPERIENCES IN SOUTH AFRICA HELP FORM YOUR BELIEFS ABOUT BEAUTY?

From a very early age I knew what it felt like to be judged for the colour of my skin and physical characteristics that I could not change.

The hurt I felt growing up in South Africa has always served as a reminder that being treated with kindness and respect, regardless of what we look like, is not a privilege, but a human right.

From all my life experiences I have come to know that there is divine beauty in all of us, not some of us and that when we choose to feel the beauty we all possess as human beings, we can embrace our differences and make peace with ourselves.For real beauty has less to do with our bone structure and much more to do with the structure of our thoughts and who we are on the inside.

This is a message I include in all of my writing regardless of whether it is a book about skincare or a book about celebrating our differences.

Q6. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU AREN’T WORKING OR WRITING?

When I am not working I like to spend the day gardening and cooking. Putting my hands in to the earth reminds me of Mother Nature’s goodnessand all that it gives us. When I fertilise the fruit trees and the garden beds I feel that I am giving back to nature and in some small way repaying it for all the goodness that nurtures me on a daily basis.

Then after a full day in the garden I pick some fresh herbs, put on some Ella Fitzgerald and head into the kitchen to soothe my senses by sautéing onions and garlic, as I prepare a meal to share with my wife.

Guest Post

Laura Childs, New York Times bestselling author of Lavender Blue Murder, wants to know – Did I scare you?

For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than cozying up in an armchair and cracking open a book that’s spooky, scary, and raises the tiny hairs on the back of my neck.

Yes, I’ll admit that I love thrillers, suspense, dystopian novels, and vampire tales. Ever since my very first Nancy Drew Mystery – The Moss Covered Mansion, I think it was – I’ve been addicted to that blip of adrenaline that courses through my veins whenever a shadow creeps into the room, there’s a strange clunk in the attic, or the plot shifts. You know what I’m talking about – when a story suddenly lurches from bad to worse, when the threat level rises, or some sort of specter, human or otherwise, makes an appearance.

And that, of course, is why I love to write mysteries as well. For one thing, I have a long history of dabbling in the mysterious. I was the kid who slipped into the cemetery Halloween night on a dare and told hair-raising ghost stories around the campfire. In college I snuck a Ouija board into the dorm and scared the pants off everybody with my otherworldly predictions.

It only stands to reason that Charleston, South Carolina is the setting for my new book Lavender Blue Murder. Charleston is an old city loaded with historic mansions, haunted graveyards, legends about boo-hags and haunts, and long-time residents with plenty of skeletons in the attic.

Edgar Allan Poe stalked Charleston’s windswept beaches and penned his poem Annabel Lee there, and it’s said that ghosts of pirates who were strung up on its shores still walk the 250-year old back alleys. The nearby swamps and bogs are iridescent with swamp gas.

Everything aligns perfectly, you see, for a rip-roaring mystery. And here to tease you is a quick synopsis of my new book Lavender Blue Murder:

On a Sunday afternoon in autumn, tea maven Theodosia Browning and her tea sommelier Drayton Conneley are guests at Reginald Doyle’s Creekmore Plantation. Because Doyle and his wife Meredith are rabid anglophiles, they’re treating their dozen or so guests to a bird hunt styled in the precise manner of an English shooting party.

But as gunshots explode like Black Cat firecrackers, another shot sounds too close for comfort. It’s a sharp pop, like the distinctive sound of a handgun. Worried now, Theodosia wanders into the neighbor’s lavender field where she discovers Reginald Doyle bleeding to death. Help is summoned, first responders arrive, but it’s too late for Reginald.

Doyle’s wife Meredith is beside herself with grief and begs Theodosia and Drayton to stay the night. But Theodosia awakens at 2:00A.M. to find smoke in her room and the plantation house on fire. As the fire department screams in and the investigating sheriff returns, Theodosia wonders who wanted Reginald dead and out of the way, and maybe even torched the house to destroy evidence? Could it be the surly caretaker Jack Grimes, Reginald’s business partner Guy Thorne, neighboring land owner Carl Clewis, the so-called “lavender lady” Susan Monday, or even Reginald’s son Alex or his wife Meredith? And why has a mysterious body just been pulled out of Charleston Harbor?

Lavender Blue Murder offers drama, outrageous humor, and chills. And because Charleston is a top go-to spot, I think you’ll also enjoy my descriptions of food and landmarks.

Happy hauntings,

Laura Childs

Tea-Maven Theodosia Browning brews up trouble in the latest Tea Shop Mystery from New York Times bestselling author Laura Childs.

Tea maven Theodosia Browning and her tea sommelier Drayton Conneley are guests at a bird hunt styled in the precise manner of an English shooting party. Which means elevenses (sloe gin fizzes), gun loaders, the drawing of pegs, fine looking bird dogs, and shooting costumes of tweed, herringbone, and suede.

But as gunshots explode like a riff of Black Cat firecrackers, another shot sounds too close for comfort to Theodosia and Drayton. Intrigued but worried, Theodosia wanders into the neighbor’s lavender field where she discovers their host, Reginald Doyle, bleeding to death.

His wife, Meredith, is beside herself with grief and begs Theodosia and Drayton to stay the night. But Theodosia awakens at 2:00A.M. to find smoke in her room and the house on fire. As the fire department screams in and the investigating sheriff returns, Meredith again pleads with Theodosia for help.

As Theodosia investigates, fingers are pointed, secrets are uncovered, Reginald’s daughter-in-law goes missing presumed drowned, and Meredith is determined to find answers via a séance. All the while Theodosia worries if she’s made a mistake in inviting a prime suspect to her upscale Lavender Lady Tea.

Beauty Product Recipe

Of all the beauty products I have created my very favorite is the first one I whipped up when I was a teen. I call it Olive and Lizzy’s Egg Facial. It leaves my skin smooth and hydrated. After using it once a week for almost every week of my life, no one believes I’m 102 years old!

Trust me, it really works. You just have to get around the icky part of egging your face.

1 egg beaten

1 tablespoon of warmed honey

1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil

1. Whisk egg, honey, and olive oil until mixture is emulsified.

Emulsified = emulsion = two or more liquids that are normally unmixable now mixed so there is no separation.

2. Apply mask to face with a facial brush or hands.

3. Let mask sit for twenty minutes then rinse off. It might feel a little bit itchy but that’s your skin being drawn tighter. I like to sprinkle just a dab of water on my face and use the mask as an exfoliator before completely rinsing it off.

The reasons why it works so well:

Egg has a temporary tightening effect which stimulates the circulation.

Honey has antibacterial properties.

Olive oil is a natural moisturizer.

It leaves your skin feeling smooth and hydrated. If there is any chance you might be allergic to honey do a test spot first. It’s rare to have an allergy to honey but when it doubt check first.

I hope you enjoy this easy-peasy, all natural facial.

Finding the killer becomes more of a challenge as the gals protect Digby’s bees from a determined land developer who wants the beekeeper’s farm. The clock ticks as saving the honeybees becomes every bit as important as finding the cousin-killer.

While Olive and Lizzy buzz about, Grams, nonagenarian ace reporter for the Silverfish Gazette, takes on the story of a diamond heist in nearby Sarasota. Can the gals protect Grams from another near catastrophe or can the feisty lady handle it alone?
