Minnett is currrently touring to promote her new book Belle Stalker.

Thanks so much Goddess Fish for connecting us on this blog tour!

Please take it away Minette!

TEQUELIN: PSYCHOLOGY OF A PSYCO

Closing her eyes, Belle pulled the smooth garment over her head. It fell down her body in a soft caress and clung against her like a second layer of skin. The tiny straps holding it didn’t seem like they could take the weight.

Hanson grabbed her arm and made her turn around. “Nice. You are a lovely creature. Now I’m going to tell you a couple of things you need to listen to real hard.”

Belle felt her head nodding, but it didn’t seem to belong to her.

“The master don’t take no guff. Meaning, you do exactly what he says. He’s got himself a wicked temper. I’ve seen…” But her voice broke, her eyes narrowed and it took her a moment to continue. “Just take my word for it, honey. He’s got certain—tastes, as it were. You’ll find out all about that. Here—” Hanson dug something out of her housecoat and put it in Belle’s hand. The two blue pills looked stark against her pale palm. “You take those now. It’ll be better if you do.”

THE BELLE STALKER – CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

TODAY’S PRIZE: eCopy of THE BELLE STALKER

(Don’t forget: If you send your name and address to Minnette, she will send you a stack of signed swag. Just drop her a note at: mmeador@minnettemeador.com )

For some reason I like to make my villains bad… I mean really bad. No use having a antagonist all sweet and fluffy now is there? They tend to be psychotic and anti-social (to say the least). I blame this on my love of serial killer stories and the men and women who have to find and stop them.

I’ve read countless books on the subject of the real monsters out there, from Jack the Ripper to
Jared Lee Loughner. Because of that I think I’m prone to writing villains that are not only villains, but monsters. In Starsight it is a powerful god who was tortured for centuries before he went mad. In The Centurion & The Queen, an insane brother who abuses his younger sister. The Edge of Honor brought us a true serial killer in the guise of a Roman officer who tortures his victims for days before he kills them and has grand megalomaniac visions of ruling Rome. My villains are nothing, if not colorful.

Tequelin from THE BELLE STALKER is no exception. Without giving too much away he wasn’t always evil; living with humans for 2000 years has driven him insane. He is powerful, persuasive, handsome, a sadist, sexy, compelling, an anti-social, and very, very dangerous, as Cranston finds out the hard way. He cut out the tongue of his man servant so he wouldn’t have to listen to him scream (and his balls to make him docile). He has tortured and killed many women for pleasure over the ages, and kills the only other being like him on earth. He hates humans with a passion, yet finds himself overwhelmingly attracted to Belle Stark and despises himself and her for it. At one time, however, he was kind and full of grace. Though he was a soldier he loathed killing. After hundreds and hundreds of years away from his kind, that all started to change.

Writing about sociopaths has been very interesting. Even they are the hero of their own story and sometimes I’ve had to get inside their heads to understand that. Not always the easiest thing to do and I often have to take a shower afterwards! For me it’s important to have an antagonist that is really worth fighting in the long run especially in historicals and thrillers. Tequelin may be a psychopathic maniac, but he is still fascinating to watch.

So what kinds of villain do you like in stories? Do you like the really evil ones or the ones who have some saving grace? Do you cheer when the hero/heroine finally get him or feel a little sad when he is gone? I promise you, if you like truly evil no good monsters, you’ll love Tequelin. You’ll also love what happens to him in the end. Minnette

I'm not picky on the degree of "baddy" that an author gives a villain. I love them all. But, I'm not really big on letting the villains win. I want the hero/heroine to save the day and extinguish the bad guys/gals.

I absolutely do a happy dance when the hero/heroine finally gets him! :-)

This sounds like one scarey story. I think I would like to read it, but only in daylight.

Very interesting post today. As long as we are discussing serial killers, what do you think of Dexter? Such a fascinating combination of hero/villian. I love that show!

Have you read 'The Devil in the White City' by Erik Larson? It is an excellent book combining the details of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with the serial killer roaming the streets at the time. I highly recommend it.

See I guess I'm a mix depending on how the writer writes him. Some of my villians, I want them gone with a passion. Some, even scare me, hell I have one that I even don't like but can never kill him off.. Its hard to say, some I want saved, because I see them as misunderstood, and everyone else looks at me like I'm crazy..

Hi Minnette,

I like to think there's at least some good in everyone, so, in that sense, I like the villans with some saving grace. However, I can see how it would be beneficial to have a villan who had no redeeming qualities whatsoever because then you don't have to feel badly when they get their just desserts.

Sheila Deeth said...

Not sure about a saving grace, but I like my villains to have a plausible reason for their villainy--some terrible thing that happened to them and led to their evil path.

I read so many different genres. All kinds of villains are fine with me.

Hmm it depends on the villian, I think one of my favorites is having a villian whom you think is a total a** and then he has his own book later and you fall in love with them because you get why they were such a *** lol :P I don't like truly evil evil ones that are just psycho and there's no reasoning for it, I never feel sad when the bad guy is gone, I'm dancing on the grave with my characters.

Sorry I've been MIA dear, been crazy busy the last few days and I've missed a few posts *sniffles* there was one I'm totally going back for on how you create worlds because I want to bookmark that :D was that the 7th hon? :)

For villians - really evil. For the heroes that have to face them, bad with saving graces.

I like the villians who are a bit snarky. Sometimes they are not too rotten to the core!

I'm so sorry I'm so late getting over here. I had jury duty today and then work... just one long "interesting" day...

Merry x-Mas to you too, Royal!

I love it when they get their butts kicked, Sapph... every single time!

Me, too, Alittle... :o)

It's not too scary, MomJane! Well, okay, in one or two parts. ~grin~

Hi, Karen - That's one show my DH won't watch so I haven't seen it. I need to find some quiet TV time just for me... but alas I don't think it will ever happen. I'd LOVE to see this show... haven't read the books, but they sound fascinating!

Hi, Yami... Isn't it funny the different perceptions of antagonists even among writers? I can't WAIT to kill mine off and it always has to be in an ironic way. I never realized it before a fan asked me why there was always such irony in their deaths. LOL

LAINEY!!! OMG, girl, I haven't talked to you in ages. Thanks so much for coming over. You are so sweet... I'll get to your email next. xxxooo

Hi, Laura... I try to build in the good with the bad and all my villains have very good reasons for turning out the way they do... well, except the one in Edge of Honor; he's just plain nuts! That guy even gave me the creeps I I invented him! :o)

Same here, Sheila. There has to be both angel and demon to them. They aren't born bad... though there is some debate about that topic.

Thanks, Andrea! I like variety myself!

I think so, Chelse... It was the Process one. Here's the link: http://www.asiancocoasblog.com/2011/12/guest-post-giveaway-belle-stalker-by.html

Thanks, Caito! I hope you get the opportunity.

Donna likes the bad boys! Actually, so do I... it's funny; I make them evil but I always make them physically beautiful too!

Snarky villains! I like that, Tracey!

No worries, Bama... Thanks for coming over!

Thanks, Kirsten - I'd love to hear what you think!

yeah, it is strange to see the difference between people. Its like Sherrilynn Kenyon's book, we have Styker who is a bad guy, not a main but still bad. I love him, as a bad guy, but I don't want him gone. xD;; He's awesome bad, I don't wanna see him good though.

I like Ironic deaths their fun. xD Its like nothing could take you down and all it took was that!?! those kind of responses are fun and are a dime a dozen.

Minnette Meador said...

I've gone both ways, Leanne... sympathetic bad guys and really, truly horrible bad guys. I think it depends on what you need for the story. However, there is one thing that is ALWAYS true about my books; the hero and heroine will be tortured and abused in nearly every way possible! I am so mean to them! But that's what builds character, right? LOL One day, they are going to rise up against me... I just know it... :o)

For me, ironic deaths are the best, Yami! I won't spoil anything here, but I'm mean to the bad guys too... :o)

Heya Minnette!

I have to say that I love your villains. As mad and evil as they are, you always have an actual reason for their evil. I love villains that are much more realistic. I think the scariest villains are those that have a reason we can all understand. I mean, we don't understand why they go as far as they do, but we understand being twisted by whatever situation they were in. I mean, for this, I think if I had to live with humans for 2000 years, I might go mad as well. ;)

Unknown said...

I don't always have to hate the villian, but I have to really not want him/her to win. Motivation of the bad guy/girl I think plays a big part in that.

Minnette Meador said...

I do try, Eli! LOL The idea came to me based off of Interview with a Vampire; that character had actually gone mad, I think, from simply living too long. The same with Heinlein's Lazarus Long series; he tried to commit suicide at 220 (I think) because he felt he had already done everything. I wondered what it would be like, for even an enlightened being, which Tequelin certainly was, if they were cut off from their own world and had to live and adapt to humans. I hope I got it right! :o)

Minnette Meador said...

Motivation is everything but I think psychotics have a very narrowed motivation, though very strong. I've had a chance to see psychosis close up recently. Logic, reason, and goals have very little to do with it. It is a mindless thing, something that has almost complete control of a person and won't let go. It's very frightening and I never want to see it again. When I'm ready, I'll talk more about that too. But this lays at the base of my villains; the unreasoning desire that focuses everything that person is to one usually destructive goal, whether personal or outwardly. The real thing is much worse than any book; it is a place where writers fear to tread... and for good reason. Sorry, I don't mean to frighten anyone! LOL Someone change the subject! :o)

Oh and my guy poison is the aggressive guy not violent but the one that makes eye contact and tells you exactly what he wants. He steps inside your space and has fire in his eyes. He looks at you like you are the only woman in the room he is so focused on you that you loose track of anything but him. When he kisses you ( and he will) you are scared and excited at the same time. You know you should say no but your words won't come. He would devour you if you gave him half a chance and you know it but he facinates you. I call this type of guy the Cobra because you know he is poisonous and you should run but you stay hypnotized and hot with wanting him.

Love it when the evil guy gets it.

Blowing kisses back, Amanda... That's your VILLAIN? Man, it makes me wonder what the good guy is like! I think this might be more of the bad boy who redeems himself later. ~teehee~

Me too, Renald! Thanks so much for coming over! :o)
