RS Review: Sleep No More: An Eve Duncan Novel [Hardcover]

I've finished "Sleep No More" the book in her Eve Duncan series by Iris Johansen.

Product Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen comes a new thriller that will have Eve Duncan questioning everything she thought she knew about her family and her past

One woman held captive for decades …

Another one freed by the truth …

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan knows what it's like to be haunted by the past. For years after her daughter Bonnie was stolen from her, she fought for closure. But now as she's striving to begin anew, she can't shake the feeling that something terrible is about to happen — or maybe already has. When her mother, Sandra, asks for help in finding a missing friend named Beth Avery, Eve is sure that she's hiding something. It’s odd that Sandra would get involved at all, and the fact that she adamantly refuses to go to the police for help reinforces Eve’s suspicions that something is very wrong.

Eve learns that Beth has been locked away in a mental hospital for years, which makes it even harder to understand how she could have disappeared. As Sandra reluctantly reveals small pieces of the truth about Beth's identity, Eve is shocked to discover that their lives are strangely entwined, and Beth's disappearance now puts them all in grave danger. Desperate, Eve enlists a secret weapon to pick up Beth's trail: rogue profiler, Kendra Michaels. With an uncanny ability to detect clues and solve puzzles, Kendra begins to uncover the bizarre circumstances of Beth's escape from what should have been the safety of her hospital room. Beth is on the run, and as her mind clears -- detoxing from the drugs that have held her prisoner -- she begins to see the threads of a twisted plot within the powerful Avery family, threatening to destroy Beth and anyone else who might jeopardize the high-stakes game that is already in play.

My Review:

Storyline:  In this book Eve is content and happy now that she has finally discovered the body of her daughter and who killed her.  Then Eve's mother Sandra calls asking Joe for help in locating Beth Avery a patient at a mental institute who has run away.

The book opens with a hired assassin creeping through a mental institute hallway into Beth Avery's room determined to kill her by poison.  He believes he sees a body in the bed but boy was he surprised when she spring at him from behind and got some great jabs at him.  She manages to outmaneuver him and escape the ward with the help of someone from the inside and specifically following his instructions.  The assassin had no idea what he was up against because he was told she was heavily sedated and acted like a zombie.  Now the assassin wants to get revenge on Beth by capturing, torturing and then finally kill her.

Eve finds out that Beth is older half-sister who was born two years before her.  He mom was a wild child in her young teens (14 years old) and was partying hard when she meet Richard Avery who was around 20 years old.  He didn't like using an protection and one day she found herself pregnant with his child.  Her mother went to his family who made both of them sign papers to give custody of the baby to them in exchange for her freedom.  Sandra has always keep an eye on Beth all these years and admits to Eve that she used her as a way to get back at her mom.

As Eve and Joe investigate further they find out that Beth has been in the institute since she was 17 years old  after a skiing accident and someone wants her silenced forever.  They find out that it's Nelda Avery wants her dead and will do anything to make sure that happens.   When Joe enlists the help of Kendra Michaels Bonnie appears to Eve wanting her to connect to Beth by helping Sandra.  Both Eve and Beth start dreaming and participating in each others dreams.

Characters:  Beth use to be a happy and carefree before her skiing accident.  Her dad Rick would visit her during this time and they were really close.  Now she doesn't know who to trust and she wants to spend her time enjoying live and doing things she missed out on while in the mental institute.

Romance:  Eve and Joe's romance has grown since when we first met them in first book now they have been together for along time and they trust each other.

There might even be a romance between Beth and Jesse in the near future though she doesn't know how he feels yet.

Kendra even had an admirer Sam who she had worked with before and is a huge help in this one.

Villains: Nelda Avery is viscous, manipulative, devious and smart and her one goal is to make sure her son Rick becomes President and she would do anything to pave the way even resort to murder if need too!
Drogan loves to inflict pain on his victims and he relishes on every moment.  He also is into voodoo and he has a pet snake he loves.  If someone gets the best of him he will vow to make sure they would pay for it (ex: Joe and Beth).

4/5
