PNR Review: Kiss of the Vampire (Warriors of the Rift) [Mass Market Paperback]
I've finished "Kiss of the Vampire" the 1st book in her Warriors of the Rift series by Cynthia Garner.
Product Description
Warriors of the Rift
Once a generation, the rift between the paranormal world and the human world opens, allowing supernatural entities to cross. Vampire, demon, or shapeshifter, they can save the world-or send it spiraling into chaos.
Half-demon, half-human, Nix de la Fuente is accepted by neither and mistrusted by both. Determined to prove she's more human than not, she devotes herself to solving crimes between the world's mortals and its most unsavory undead. But her latest case brings her face to face with the one vampire she could never resist.
Called in to investigate a string of violent murders, special agent Tobias Caine isn't interested in rekindling his relationship with Nix. Yet one look and the vampire knows his need for her is as strong as ever. Once, their all-consuming passion nearly cost Nix her fragile hold on her humanity. Now, as their hunger for one another intensifies, exposing them to an unimaginable danger, it could cost them both their lives.

My Review:
Nix de la Fuente is the human liaison to the Council of Preternaturals, and she is a half-breed mix of human and demon. She hides this from everyone except her friend Dante MacMillan a detective on the Special Case Squad. They find themselves at a crime scene where a vampire (a close friend of Nix at one time) has been brutally murdered. While she must find a way to grieve through her passing, she is thrown a loop when the new vampire liaison arrives on scene: Nix's ex-love, Tobias Caine.
Nix find herself forced to work with Tobias, the man who broke her heart yet still drives her crazy, all while investigating multiple vampire murders. Tobias still loves Nix, but left so she could hold on to her humanity (he loved her that much).
I really enjoyed the supernatural world that Cynthia came up with the different paranormal species with their own set of special powers and flaws.
This was a very fast paced and very thrilling first book in the series with a well written plot and well developed main and secondary characters (especially Dante who was a comic relief and where did he put all that food?)
4/5

This story definitely had an unusual way to explain supernatural abilities!
I liked the story, but didn't love it. I just couldn't get that invested in the romance...
Thanks for the review.
If I hadn't already decided that I wanted Kiss of the Vampire, your review would have helped me to decide I needed it.
