Why I Love Paranormals

Paranormal romance is hot right now. Everyone knows it. Nobody’s denying it. Heck, anything paranormal is hot right now. The romance element just makes it even hotter. Long before a certain tousle haired young man took on the role of a sparkling vampire on screen those of us in the romance field have known just how sexy something with a little bite can be.

The question I’m always asked though by my non romance reader friends (Yeah, I know. Somebody who doesn’t read romance? Some of my friends apparently had head injuries in their childhoods) is why? Why are paranormals such a big thing? My first reply has always been, “I don’t know. Why did you pick it up and read it?”

But that response was before. Back in my pre-author days. Otherwise known as “back when we had a family room that wasn’t Mommy’s office so turn the television down already.” Back when any old answer would do. Now though? Now those answers won’t cut it. Because apparently as a published writer of paranormal romance I am now something of an expert. Yeah somebody needs their head examined after that statement. But what the heck, experts can send someone else to run for the lattes while they answer such troubling questions about the state of our literary existence. And I like the lattes from the place down the street, not the coffee shop downstairs. Sounds like a win win situation to me.

Anyway, enough about my unfortunate love of lattes. I only told you about that to tell you why I was thinking about such weighty questions as “Why do we love paranormal books?”

Is it because the men are just that much better than the real life ones we’re saddled with? Is the lure of a fantasy lover who is fabulously handsome, rich and has the grace to never become balding as he lurches into immortal middle age? Well come to think of it…

If I’m being completely serious though, as a writer the reason I love paranormal books is because they allow me to make my own rules. Which is why I became a storyteller in the first place. The world I grew up in was boring. Mundane. It had only one stoplight and still doesn’t have a Starbucks.

Storytelling gave me a bigger world to play in. A more interesting place to be than where I was. And paranormal stories give me an even bigger group of characters and situations to immerse myself in. Paranormals let your imagination quite literally take flight in a way nothing else can. Want your characters to be able to fly? Boom, done. Scribble that into your world building. Always wondered what it would be like to have a tail? Give your main heroine one and see what happens.

So, while people on the street love to tell me how they heard from a reputable source who knows these sorts of things that paranormals are dying post-Twilight, I just smile and walk away. Because one thing I know for certain is this. While we might change our labels or tweak our characters slightly to find new ways to tell a story one thing is for certain. Paranormal writers and readers aren’t fading away anytime soon. We’ve got too many places and people and things yet to explore together after all.

Product Description

Being the youngest daughter of the Devil isn't all it s cracked up to be. The days of teenage rebellion and vows of chastity made just to tick off her father are over, and now all Faith Bettincourt wants is a nice, quiet life. Unfortunately, thanks to the unexpected arrival of her demonically-downsized sister, a ditzy succubus roommate, and dear old Dad himself, Faith s plans for a relaxing vacation spent watching reruns go up in flames.

Now it's all Faith can do to keep the family reunion from Hell (literally) under wraps, and the angelically-inclined hottie across the hall from realizing there's something weird about his neighbor. And, thankfully, it's working. Until an angelic stalker shows up in a bid to steal her powers and take over the world. Forget watching reruns. With the way things are going, Faith will need the luck of the Devil just to survive until Monday.

I've always stayed clear of books with cartoonized covers. Can't really explain what it is that made me NOT want to take a second look. In this case, however, I love the little devil!!
Thanks for the giveaway :-)

I love paranormal romance because it beautifully merges two of my favorite genres - fantasy and romance. I loved your book blurb. Hope I win because I can't wait to read it! :0)

Hi, Patricia. Read the book excerpt on your publisher's website. I write romantic suspense, but love anything funny and original. Yours wins on both counts.
