I am so excited to have Dina Rae here at Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews with an Except and Giveaway.

Thanks Goddess Fish Promotions and Dina for allowing me to join your blog tour!

Please take it away, Dina!

Excerpt:

Later that night after signing up the family for the church’s Haitian mission, Jessica read a few chapters from her romance book, stretched out in bed and then fell into a deep sleep. She seemed transported into another world. Not sure if she was dreaming, she ended up crouched behind a tree, watching something foreign and undoubtedly evil. Every hair on her body stood erect. Instinct told to her run, yet she sat like concrete. The flames from the bonfire tickled her skin, taunting her of what was to come. This is too real to be a dream.

Her fear stemmed from a gathering of tribal Africans dressed in colorful, draped garments and exotic jewelry from another era. They appeared to be celebrating. As she listened to their banter, she thought she recognized the language. Was it French? Maybe Spanish? The unknown accent made her question her guesses.

The fire blazed as they talked and drank. Three men took their seats at a collection of handmade drums. As they played, all chanted in unison.

Next to the fire was a large wooden table with a primitive-looking goblet wrapped in animal skin. The drumming led to dancing. Still hidden, she watched, dreading the volume of her heartbeat would give her away. The rhythm got faster, taking on its own life force. Some of the dancers discarded their sarongs, gyrating naked in sync to the drums while frothing at the mouth. Others randomly fornicated with the nearest person available. Where am I?

Six men dressed in white linen carried out a white man on a cot made of tree branches and canvas. He wore nothing but a bright, long scarf with swirls of red and orange. Jessica couldn’t see his face. She contemplated if he was dead. But then his lifeless body began to stir as he closed in on the fire. The cot carriers stopped in front of the table she now believed to be an altar. The sedated victim was transferred onto the wooden surface. Drumming, chanting, dancing…Jessica could feel herself getting sleepy, almost hypnotized by the drum beats. One of the men dressed in white raised his arms, abruptly ending the festivities. Everyone fiercely dropped to the grass and bowed towards him and the altar. Jessica presumed he was the leader. He took a curved dagger and pointed to the sky while reciting a prayer. It’s definitely French. Four years in high school and can’t remember one word, she thought, disgusted.

BLURB:

A Haitian bokor mentors two teens in the dark arts. Their spells backfire.

Lucien Nazaire flees his Haitian homeland and meanders around the United States for decades. He settles in a Wisconsin trailer park filled with elderly tenants. He meets Jake and hires him for odd household jobs. As their relationship progresses, Lucien invites the boy into the world of Voodoo.

Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo lessons give him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school.

Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust, leading up to dire consequences.

Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island's reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite.

Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for adults and mature teens. The plot uses research involving the Voodoo religion.

MT Review: Hit Me (Keller) [Hardcover]

I've finished "Hit Me" the 5th book in his Keller series by Lawrence Block.

Product Description

BESTSELLING AUTHOR AND GRAND MASTER LAWRENCE BLOCK RETURNS TO HIS DEADLIEST HITMAN

A man named Nicholas Edwards lives in New Orleans renovating houses, doing honest work and making decent money at it. Between his family and his stamp collection, all his spare time is happily accounted for. Sometimes it's hard to remember that he used to kill people for a living.

But when the nation's economy tanks, taking the construction business with it, all it takes is one phone call to drag him back into the game. It may say Nicholas Edwards on his driver's license and credit cards, but he's back to being the man he always was: Keller.

Keller's work takes him to New York, the former home he hasn't dared revisit, where his target is the abbot of a midtown monastery. Another call puts him on a West Indies cruise, with several interesting fellow passengers-the government witness, the incandescent young woman keeping the witness company, and, sharing Keller's cabin, his wife, Julia. But the high drama comes in Cheyenne, where a recent widow is looking to sell her husband's stamp collection.

About the Author

Lawrence Block is a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, has won multiple Edgar and Shamus awards and countless international prizes. The author of more than 50 books, he lives in New York City.

My Review:

Keller had to retire after the events that happened in "Hit and Run" and is now living in New Orleans with his wife Julia and his daughter Jenny.  He is now known as Nicholas Edwards and renovates home and in his spare time collects stamps to add to his collection.  Then Katrina hits and the construction business is on the skids and his partner and good friend has taken another job on another construction site.

Then his old friend Dorothea Harbison now known as Dot calls him up for the blue asking him to take a job to eliminate someone for a hefty sum he agrees.

This book deals with unfaithful spouses, dirty old men, devious priests, criminal scums among other low lifes.

Will update later on today with the proper format.

My Review:

Muzuki's house catches on fire and her prized guitar is destroyed so she moves in with Akira at the Dankaisan dorm.  She gets a part-time job to pay for a new guitar which she is very popular and makes the other employees jealous.

During this time they also make out on his bed and she is worrying if she really wants to sleep with Akira or not.  After some kissing he stops because he knows she isn't ready and he will wait until she is ready.  He wants to make love to her.

At the end Akira invites Mizuki for some alone time with just the two of them and she decides she really wants to be with him.

The illustrations are gorgeously drawn, the storyline is heading to more serious and adult like theme and Akira and Mizuki's relationship is stronger than ever.  I'm glad that he didn't pressure her in sleeping with him and is manly enough to wait until she is really ready.

My Review:

Issac Rothe use to be a black ops soldier who now wins fights in the underground world of fighting.  He is on the run from his former boss who has put out a hit on him.  He is framed for the murder of a fellow fighter and he is thrown into jail.   He is represented by gorgeous public defender Grier Childe who he has a hot attraction too.  Then he meets a Jim Heron a former comrade who tells him his soul is in danger.

I did like Issac, Jim and his gang but I didn't connect with Grier.  The book was fast paced and things did happen and Grier's dad is involved too.

My Review:

Storyline:  When Detective Vito Ciccotellia and Detective Nick Lawrence find a young women's body posed and killed in by a religious ritual killing in a snow-covered Philadelphia field and find other massive graves in the field they believe a serial killer is on the loose.

They hire archaeologist Sophie Johannsen who uses ground penetrating equipment which unearths 16 graves some filled and some not filled yet. As they investigate further they realized the killer is meting his own medieval torture on his victims before killing them. Then he incorporates their scenes into a video game cut scenes which is quite realistic and gory.

Characters:  Vito was a great hero because he was smart, handsome, determined and went after what he wanted (Sophie) and he even knew what to send her.  He has a close relationship with his warm and loving family.

Sophie was a great heroine but at times she did get on my nerves (she wouldn't listen to Vito or she didn't even explain why she was mad at him).  She was smart and didn't let a former indiscretion get in her way to achieve where she is today an archeologist at a museum.

Romance:  I really did enjoy the romance between Vito and Sophie because it started slowly and they got to know each other before hopping into bed.  You could tell they cared for each other and how Sophie really liked his family and his family accepted her.

Villain:  The villain was really sadistic in his tortures and his ritual killings.  For some people it would be disturbing because the torture and killings are graphically described.

My Review:

This series is about love and redemption with war between angels and demons an the results determined by seven battles for seven souls.

Vin DiPietro is the first soul up for grabs.  He's a very powerful and rich man who isn't satisfied with everything he has.  He started with nothing and worked his way up by doing whatever he needed to do and didn't always follow the rules to make it where he is today.  His soul is on the edge until the night he looks into beautiful and somehow familiar Marie-Tereses eyes across a dance floor a a club.

Marie-Terese is also on a crossroad because the job she has to support her young son has been eating her up.  Even her boss Trez thinks she doesn't really belong there and he takes care of his girls very well.  She finds herself extremely attracted to the wealthy and handsome Vin but she has done that already and paid a heavy price.

When did you start blogging?

January 2013. I am a newbie though I have been writing reviews on goodreads for a year now.

What is your favorite part of book blogging?

Meeting new people. As cliche as that sounds, I love people! Unfortunately, nobody in my life is as much of a book nerd as I am. If I can’t find someone to confess my book obsessions to, I’ll explode. I think the whole book blog community is a great way for authors, publishers, and readers to get together and share their interest.

What type of books do you mainly blog about?

Mostly YA fantasy, paranormal, and dystopian fiction. I also like adult urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and New Adult romances!

What is your favorite book(s)?

Hard question. I really hate choosing favorites. My current favorites are Moira Young’s Dustland series, Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, Susan Ee’s Angelfall, and Ann Aguirre’s Razorland series.

What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

You mean besides being featured? Everything! It’s hard to say because I am still so new. This answer goes back to question two. I have met some lovely people around here that write very entertaining reviews. Everyone I have met so far is very sweet. I am very excited to make new memories with other bloggers.

Our Feature - Reading...Dreaming

1. When did you start blogging?

I started a year ago. My first post went live on February 16th. I don't remember if I created the blog that day or before :p

2. What is your favorite part of book blogging?

I love getting in touch with authors. I never imagine that it would be possible to write directly with authors :) and I love chating with people who share my passion for books.

3. What type of books do you mainly blog about?

I review all kinds of books. Lately I've been reading a lot of YA, new Adult and a lot of paranormal books.

4. What is your favorite book(s)?

My favorite book is THE LITLLE PRINCE (El Principito for Spanish speakers). If you check out my previous F&F I always talk about that book. It's really important for me and I love it.

5. What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

Mmmm... Everything has been great! One of the most amazing moments was the first time I received a paperback copy for review, I almost cry. I live in Uruguay (South America) and imagine receiveing books from US and UK. I don't know any other blogger from here so the whole idea of authors sending copies of their books was a little crazy for me)

Q: We always talk about books that WE want. Let's turn it on its head. What books have you given other people lately?

I'm pretty lucky I have a family member that reads most of the same genres I like (except for erotic, historicals or shonen-ai and yaoi).

I gave some James Patterson books to my grandma and I just gave "Suspect" by Robert Crais and "The Seventh Victim" by Mary Burton to my mom.  I gave some manga to my teenage cousin (the ones only appropriate for her age) and I gave some Kelley Armstrong books to another cousin.

ARC Review: The Seventh Victim [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "The Seventh Victim" by Mary Burton.

It's been seven years since the Seattle Strangler terrorized the city. His victims were all young, pretty, their lifeless bodies found wrapped in a home-sewn white dress. But there was one who miraculously escaped death, just before the Strangler disappeared.  Lara Church has only hazy memories of her long-ago attack.

What she does have is a home in Austin, a job, and a chance at a normal life at last. Then Texas Ranger James Beck arrives on her doorstep with shattering news: The Strangler is back. And this time, he's in Austin.  He's always craved her, even as he killed the others. For so long he's been waiting to unleash the beast within. And this time, he'll prove he holds her life in his hands - right before he ends it forever.

About the Author

Mary Burton is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of several historical romance and romantic suspense novels, including Senseless, Dying Scream, and Dead Ringer. Her novella Christmas Past appears in the 2008 New York Times bestselling anthology Silver Bells. Her commitment to realism has led to eye-opening interviews with law enforcement, to forensic seminars and to the firing range. She is a graduate of the Henrico County Citizens Police Academy and the Richmond FBI Citizen's Academy, and has participated in Sisters in Crime's Forensic University program. Mary lives in Virginia with her family.

My Review:

Storyline:  Seven years ago in Seattle a killer nicknamed "The Seattle Strangler" left his calling card young pretty women were found wearing home-made white dresses.  Lara Church just barely got away before the Strangler disappeared and her memory is very hazy about the attack.

Lara has moved to Austin Texas with a nice paying job, a home, has adopted a dog and is living a normal life.  Now the Strangler has resurfaced in Austin, Texas and Lara finds out when Texas Ranger James Beck arrives on her doorstep. James believes Lara is the key to solve the case and he vows to protect her to the very end!

Characters:  I didn't really like Lara that much because when someone asked her not to do something to ensure her safety she didn't listen to them and did it anyways (ex:  visit a former crime scene to take pictures)  If I was her I would definitely like to remember what happened that day and to figure out who the culprit was.

I really liked James because he was persistent and persuasive to convince Lara that she needed to seek therapy to remember what happened the day she was attacked and left for dead.  He was determined to protect Lara and make sure no one hurt her again on his watch.  Glad that he didn't listen to his captain and went with his own instincts.

Romance:  You could feel the chemistry between Lara and James and it was simmering below the surface.  The love scene between them was very steamy and hot.

Villain(s):  Both villains were quite creepy in their own individual ways and the way they both thought.

This book focused more on the suspense then the romance and I really enjoyed reading about all the Tex-Mex food that was eaten.

4/5

Thanks Joan Schulfer for sending me this ARC to review, greatly appreciated!
