Reasons (Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Reasons" by Tracy Fabre.

Product Description

Delphi Brent, seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident as a teenager, is ready to spend the summer with old family friends when her parents make a distressing confession: the driver of the car that nearly killed her was one of the three sons of the Laughlin family she's about to visit. They urge her to stay home and let the past be, but she resolves to go out West anyway to learn the truth about what happened the night she was struck and one of the Laughlin sons died. However, in reconnecting with the Laughlins, who operate a sprawling ranch in Colorado, Delphi learns a lot not only about brothers and families, but also about the reasons people keep secrets, and what to do with the truth once it's uncovered. She also falls in love with one of the Laughlin brothers, and that wasn't part of the plan at all.

My Review:

I'm glad that Delphi decided to find out who and what really happened that night she was hit.  I really like her character because she has spunk and wouldn't back down when Noreen would harass her!  She put her in her place, good for her!

I also liked most of the other main characters except for Noreen!

The romance between Tam and Delphi was different because she was suprised and it was unexpected that she was attracted and falling in love with Tam.  Tam has always been interested in Delphi since they were teenagers so I guess he didn't really know how to act around her (knowing that she had a crush on his older brother Bobby and besides he felt like a pervert)!

We finally found out who was driving the car and what really happened that night and I'm glad that it's resolved and the person is getting help and support!

Kim Smith Guest Post

I am so excited to have Kim Smith Guest Post at Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews.

Kim Smith is currrently touring to promote her newest release "Buried Angel".

Blurb:

Shannon Wallace is finding trouble in the most bizarre places these days, but not as bizarre as the ones her sidekick Dwayne Brown is finding. When his friend. Bubba, is found stuffed in a cooler in his flower shop, the hunt is on to find his killer.

Could it be Bubba’s sister who is now his heir, or maybe one of the flower shop guys who works with Bubba? You can be sure the dreadful duo of Shannon and Dwayne won’t rest until they have helped South Lake’s police department, and the Hispanic hottie investigator, Sal Ramirez, find his man. Or was that woman?

Thanks so much Dorothy from Pump Up Your Promotions for connecting us on this blog tour!

Please take it away, Kim!

I've been on a virtual book tour for the whole month of January. Today, I was home for a bit and I stood in my front yard and looked at a now-budding tree, and at a cardinal who flew up and peered down at me before flitting off again. There is something so thrilling about spring whether it's your first or forty- eighth. And I am anxious to see more. Like the first iris’ appearing in the front bed or a baby bird or the opening of blossoms on my Daddy’s rose bushes. I always think spring is my favorite season. But then summer comes. And then fall. As for winter, well...That is when I have my birthday, so of course…

And isn’t writing a new book sort of like the newness of spring? Everything is so good, and new, and fresh. You put fingers to keyboard or pen to pad and it is just good. I think that so many aspiring authors never get to the end because they are in love with that first blush of a story. One that leaps off the page and won’t let them be. The one where the characters wake them up in the middle of the night, talking and talking about their story.

Oh you know what I mean!

It’s like two old friends meeting again for the first time. They have so much they want to say and they spend oodles of time catching up over a cup of coffee and when they are allowed to take a breath they realize how much fun they are having.

Writing a new story is like that. The fun part of creativity.

I spent time with a writing friend recently, and she told me she is shutting down the thoughts about her book for a while. It’s a family thing. Her family is young and they need her time far more than her book life needs her time. I told her it was okay to set it aside. It will still be there in a few months when she can once again seek it out like long searching fingers looking for someone to hold onto.

And so it is. Sometimes we have to say no to that work that we keep looking at and wanting to tinker with. Sometimes the timing just isn’t what we can fit in. I say, so what? Do what must be done and enjoy the life you have.

Sooner or later, you will come back to this creature you have been piecing together like a paper Frankenstein. You will nudge it with your writing toe and it will be there, waiting for you to breathe new life into it. And won’t you be thrilled to find that freshness, that aroma of a new work, blow through your mind?

Kim Smith is the author of the cozy mystery series featuring the zany Shannon Wallace. Her latest installment, Buried Angel, is now available at: http://www.redrosepublishing.com/

A Different Light (Mass Market Paperback)

I've just finished reading "A Different Light" a re-issue by Mariah Stewart.

Product Description

Dear Reader:

I can hardly believe that A Different Light, one of my earliest novels, is available again at long last! And while the story is still the same, I've added new scenes and fleshed out the characters, making the novel richer and more contemporary. I've written twenty-three novels since A Different Light was first published, and I like to think I've brought the experience of the years to make this sparkling new edition even more compelling than before.

Throughout these years, the character of Athena Moran has stayed with me. In her New Jersey town, beautiful, vibrant Athena is well known as the young widow of a police officer slain in the line of duty and as the daughter of a beloved former city councilman. But when she meets Quentin Forbes, a tough newspaper reporter, emotions that she believed died along with her husband start to stir again. Then she is asked to run for mayor, and the political contest that follows will test her newfound feelings to the breaking point, teaching her that things are not always as they appear, and much of what she's believed is more smoke than substance. The new direction Athena chooses tests her strength and courage, and ultimately leads her to see herself and everyone she knows in a totally new and different light.

Best,

Mariah Stewart

My Review:

The characters were well written especially Athena, Quentin, Callie, etc.  Callie was a hoot not used to a 10 yr. old being that straightforward and rude.
I really enjoyed reading the romance between Athena and Quentiin except for the parts they were mad at each other and they totally ignore each other, etc.

Dan was a total jerk and I didn't like that he was using Athena for his own evil deeds and what he did near the end was just dispicable!

I also didn't like the Board Members treated Athena like she didn't have an opinion and also the secretary was just uhhh, glad to see what happened to her!  LOL!

I'm glad that Meg her sister-in-law was quite truthful and honest when speaking to Athena that she needed to move on and explained the situation about Quentin being a reporter and that was his job!

AUTHOR BIO

I began writing the way so many writers do—the moment I learned to wield a pencil. But even as a child, I didn't write "kid" stories. I preferred something more dramatic. Something that didn't include Dick, Jane, and a dog named Spot. I wanted my characters to be named Dracula and my dogs to have names like White Fang or Cujo. I'll always have my parents to thank for that. They never censored my reading material (though I suspect that if they had truly known what was between the covers of some of the books, they'd have been a little more careful,) so when other girls my age were reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and Judy Blume, I was immersing myself in Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Later, after I'd joined the Air Force and was in dire need of something to read between shifts at the weather station, I continued to read horror, but I'd branched out into fantasy, and then, finally, romance (though I admit I went kicking and screaming to the latter.)

Turned out that I loved romance! So I started writing it, but again, my style and voice leaned toward the dark, paranormal side. Fortunately for me, paranormal romance, as a sub-genre, was booming. I let my imagination fly, and soon I'd sold a series of dark, sexy paranormal romances to Grand Central Publishing.

I still read a lot of horror, science fiction, and fantasy, and in fact, one of my all time favorite books about writing is On Writing, by my favorite childhood horror author, Stephen King. If you're an author or a reader, I highly recommend this book for an insight into an author's mind—which can sometimes be a very scary place.

Go ahead; Seduce your dark side.

Victoria Bliss's Virtual Tour: Getting Intimate Q/A & Giveaway

I am so excited to have Victoria Bliss here to talk in a Q/A here at Paranormal and Romantic Suspense Reviews.

Victoria is currrently touring to promote her new erotic book Getting Intimate.

Book Blurb:

They hated their own bodies but loved each other. Would their lack of self confidence tear them apart or could love make them whole?

It’s been almost six months since Terri and John first met and fell in love at the gym and John wants to think of something special to mark their anniversary. Terri is convinced that John is secretly seeing one of the skinny gym girls and her paranoia pushes her away from him. She thinks that she is too fat to hold the attention of such a fit guy.

John must think of a way to convince Terri that he really loves her sexy, curvaceous body and that nobody could take her place or face losing her forever.

For more information about each book, please visit http://www.greenstoneofhealing.com/

Thanks so much Goddessfish.com for connecting us on this blog tour!

Please take it away, Victoria!

1. Why did you become a writer?

Simply because it is what I am. I would go mad if I didn’t write. I have ideas and those ideas won’t stop bugging me until they are written down and mostly those ideas form stories.

2. What is your book(s) about?

Well, my books in general are about love and lust and cuddly folk. I love to write about women with curves and their particular hang ups as well as their positive points.

Getting Intimate itself is the continuation of John and Terri’s story. They met in the gym in ‘Getting Physical’ and fell in love dispite neither of them believing the other would ever fancy them. John thinks he’s too skinny and Terri Thinks she is too fat. Getting Intimate is what happens once they get together. It explores their relationship and what strengthens it and what weakens it.

3. Who are your favorite authors or genres?

I love to read fantasy. I especially adore David Gemmell for his amazing Heroic fantasies and Terry Pratchett for his humour. I love the Discworld novels.

4. If you weren't an author what would you be?

Maybe a baker. I love baking! Cakes, biscuits, jams and chutneys, homemade sweets and all things sugary. I really enjoy feeding people and especially like to see the happy smiles on their faces as they munch something I’ve made.

5. What's your daily schedule like?

Madness and mayhem? I am a full time mum. Most days I get up between 5:30 and 6 am and write for a couple of hours before I wake up my daughter. Then I get her to school, shop, clean, go to church or school meetings and all the other associated stuff that comes from being a mum, a governor and a church member.

I like writing in the morning, it’s a nice, quiet way to start my day.

6. What's on your next to do list?

Well, I’m writing this just before Christmas so mostly my schedule is taken up with Christmas related items. Writing-wise I am working on a story called ‘Naked Rain’ for a Total-E-Bound Cougar anthology and I do need to start work on the final book in the ‘Getting There’ series of books.

Thank you Victoria for being here today to answer my questions, I greatly appreciate it!

Please follow Victoria Blisses last  4 days on her blog tour here:  http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2009/11/virtual-book-tour-getting-intimate-by.html

Victoria will be giving away an autographed copy of her book "Curvaceous " to one randomly drawn commenter from the tour and an autographed copy of her book to the tour host with the most comments, excluding duplicates or Victoria’s responses.

KM Daughters Guest Post + Giveaway

I am so excited to have KM Daughters Guest Post here at Razlover's Book Blog.

KM Daughters is currrently touring to promote her new romantic suspense series "Capturing Karma" book three in the popular Sullivan Boys series.

Book Description:

Veterinarian Matty Connors’ visions lead her to homicide detective Brian Sullivan once again despite her resolve to remain anonymous the past four years. Her official work with the police in California resulted in the brutal murder of her fiancé, and since, a recurrent nightmare she barely survives. Brian, the reputed ladies man of the Sullivan family, has yet to give his heart to a woman until Matty lays claim to it. His black-and-white approach to solving crimes doesn’t jibe with Matty’s spooky pronouncements or her reputation for alleged infallibility. A wild goose chase searching for a murder weapon casts doubt on Matty’s “truths” and threatens their smoldering romance. Is Brian her nightmare slayer and ultimate truth? When the puzzle pieces fall in place for Brian, will it be too late to save Matty?

“Watch out…the Sullivan Boys are a force to be reckoned with!...” NYT Bestselling Author, Brenda Novak

That cover quote on AGAINST DOCTORS ORDERS, from the talented, Brenda Novak, launched the Sullivan Boys series in 2008. Book 2, BEYOND THE CODE OF CONDUCT, released in May 2009. “Get ready for another fabulous Sullivan story,” Brenda Novak said, about the second book in the series. RT Book Reviews Magazine rated the second installment, “Compelling, page turner.”

The excitement and delight this series represents for us continues with the release of Book 3, CAPTURING KARMA. Brenda Novak says, “K.M. Daughters is a natural born storyteller!” Thank you so very much, Brenda. We love what we do! And we love those Sullivan Boys.

Editor, Joelle Walker, The Wild Rose Press, acquired the ongoing series for the publisher and has worked with us on four books to date. She just acquired Book 4, ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND LAW. Aside from creating the novels, working with Joelle has been the most amazing and wonderful part of producing The Sullivan Boys books.

The relationship with Joelle has grown into a treasured friendship, after only one face-to-face, brief meeting at a national RWA conference – just to put faces to names.  Working together to craft the best books possible, line by line, includes Joelle in our fictional world – the world we love to play in. She is the consummate professional and teacher. When she lacks patience, she still manages to encourage the best in us. We quote, “What’s the matter, girls? Lose your thesaurus?” LOL

When we delight her, she bestows the BEST praise. “You rock!”

After sharing our 4-star review with her, Joelle congratulated us and professed, “CAPTURING KARMA will give BEYOND THE CODE OF CONDUCT a run for its money.” Ah, Joelle, you made our day.

Please follow KM Daughters last 8 days on her blog tour here:
http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2009/12/virtual-book-tour-km-daughters.html

KM Daughters' will be giving away an autographed copy of Against Doctor's Orders, the first book in the award-winning Sullivan Boys Series to one randomly drawn commentor and the blog host with the most comments, excluding duplicates or KM's responses.

Sleep No More (Mass Market Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Sleep No More" by Susan Crandall.

Product Description

The night was always Abby Whitman's enemy. As a young girl she walked in her sleep, and one night, she started a fire that scarred her sister for life and left Abby with unbearable guilt . . . and a loneliness that echoes within her. Now Abby has begun blacking out again-with apparently fatal results. A car accident has killed the son of a prominent family. Even though the evidence seems to exonerate her, Abby is plagued by doubts-and soon by mysterious threats. Psychiatrist Dr. Jason Coble is intrigued by Abby and offers to help her explore the dark recesses of her mind. Through this terrifying journey, Jason's interest turns to passion, and he yearns to give her the love she craves. But first, Abby must trust him-and shed light on secrets that
will rock this Southern town and reveal a danger that threatens them both.

My Review:

Wow this one was a fast paced and terrifying read!

I love Jason and Abby together because they understand one another (I'm glad they didn't jump right into bed but waited) and he was willing to help her and not push her into something she wasn't ready for!

I thought Abby's sister was quite selfish and I'm glad she finally talked to Abby at the end about a secret!

The killer wasn't that fleshed out but I wouldn't want to be near him but he was great in manipulating people!

This story transports the reader to an alternate-reality version of New York City, in which talking dogs interact regularly with humans. The hero, Dino Vicelli, is a private investigator who just happens to be a sharply dressed Italian greyhound with a great fondness for cigars. The Professional (Spenser) (Hardcover)

I've just finished reading "The Professional" the 37th book in his Spenser series by Robert B. Parker.

Product Description

A knock on Spenser's office door can only mean one thing: a new case. This time the visitor is a local lawyer with an interesting story. Elizabeth Shaw specializes in wills and trusts at the Boston law firm of Shaw & Cartwright, and over the years she's developed a friendship with wives of very wealthy men. However, these rich wives have a mutual secret: they've all had an affair with a man named Gary Eisenhower- and now he's blackmailing them for money. Shaw hires Spenser to make Eisenhower "cease and desist," so to speak, but when women start turning up dead, Spenser's assignment goes from blackmail to murder.

As matters become more complicated, Spenser's longtime love, Susan, begins offering some input by analyzing Eisenhower's behavior patterns in hopes of opening up a new avenue of investigation. It seems that not all of Gary's women are rich. So if he's not using them for blackmail, then what is his purpose? Spenser switches tactics to focus on the husbands, only to find that innocence and guilt may be two sides of the same coin.

My Review:

Glad to see Susan's input when matters became more complicated.

Always happy to see Spenser cooking and love his double-entendre's with Susan.

Yeah Hawk and Vinnie are back!

Once Upon a Nightmare (Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Once Upon a Nightmare" by Lee Moylan.

Product Description

On the night of October thirteenth, the Hunter's Moon descended upon the quiet town of White Chapel. As Sara Bishop drifted off to sleep under its soft illumination, the full moon seemed to have brought with it something far more sinister than a warm glow. At once, the nightmare started. But this wasn't any ordinary nightmare… This one seemed real ─ as if she could smell it, feel it, taste it. It was one of those dreams ─ one that awakened her witch-like sense ─ a harbinger of heartbreak and now, horror. Together with Rebecca Parker, the only other person who understood her gift, someone who had experienced her own strange senses, Sara hoped to come to terms with this ominous nightmare. But her closest friend and next door neighbor was no where to be found ─ not since the night of October thirteenth. And so it begins. With little help from her skeptical husband or local police, Sara finds herself virtually alone as her grisly dreams crawl from the darkness to become a sick and twisted reality ─ a reality where she has become the ultimate desire of a sadistic serial killer. As images of death, phantoms and shadows surround Sara in this Halloween season, she needs to listen to the whispers in her mind, use her gift, to unmask those around her, for one of them is the man from her nightmare. And he sees her when she's sleeping… He knows when she's awake. When the next full moon descends upon White Chapel, he will reveal himself to her. And under its silvery glow, a new nightmare will be born. Will Sara Bishop have to experience death itself to stop this killer? Or will her nightmare never end?

My Review:

Wow was this book a really terrifying and scary read!

The killer was quite normal when you read about them but in killing mood wow (very scary and frightening) and what happened to the victims was just terrifying.  The killing scenes were quite graphic so you can imagine what was happening to the victim and how they felt and how the killer felt too!

I believe this should be made into a movie and I highly recommend reading!

Blood Game: An Eve Duncan Forensics Thriller (Eve Duncan Forensics Thrillers) (Hardcover)

I've just finished reading "Blood Games" the latest Eve Duncan book by Iris Johansen.

Product Description

First comes darkness, then comes fear

Eve Duncan is back! Blockbuster New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen’s latest thriller brings Eve closer to discovering her daughter’s killer…and into a web of danger from which she may not be able to escape…

Eve Duncan returns in a thriller that pits her against the most evil mind she has ever encountered: a ruthless killer who taunts her with his every move…and who has a special affinity for blood. When a Georgia senator’s daughter is found murdered, and her body drained of blood, Eve Duncan is drawn into the web of Kevin Jelak—a serial murderer who is on Eve’s short list of killers who might know something about her missing daughter Bonnie. When a goblet of blood is found in Eve’s refrigerator, she knows the taunting is over…and the games have begun. As Eve and Jelak engage in a dance of death, Eve must call upon those she loves and trusts the most…even if it means bringing them into the game as well.

SPOILERS!

My Review:

Fast paced so it was hard to stop reading!

Storyline:  Interesting storyline with a killer that drinks blood believing it will grant him immorality!

Characters:  All of the characters are quite well written especially Eve, Joe and Jane.  Glad to see Montalvo and Megan are back!

Romance: I really enjoyed reading the romance between Eve and Joe but I wish they would tell each other they both see Bonnie!

Killer: The killer was one sick freak because he likes to drink other people's blood believing it will make him immortal (has to be a certain bloodline).  Loved how he was killed, LOL!

Love You to Death (Mass Market Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Love You to Death" by Shannon K. Butcher.

Product Description

Delicate, expressive hands...long, graceful legs...One man is looking for his perfect woman--and he'll stop at nothing until he finds her.

LOVE YOU TO DEATH

It's been days since reporter Elise McBride has heard from her sister, Ashley. She's convinced Ashley has met with some kind of foul play, especially when she learns that bodies of other missing women have surfaced in and around Chicago--all victims of a brutal serial killer. Convinced her sister is still alive, Elise vows to risk everything to save her...

The last thing ex-cop Trent Brady needs is more blood on his hands. Yet when he catches Elise breaking into her sister's house, full of reckless determination and fear, he knows she needs his help. But just as desire ignites between them, a twisted madman sets his sights on Elise. Hell-bent on possessing her for himself, this psychopath won't rest until he has his perfect woman.

About the Author

Shannon K. Butcher learned to write from her husband, bestselling author Jim Butcher, as she helped him with his stories. Soon she found the idea of creating he own too compelling to resist and, after too many years workign as an industrial engineer, gladly left that career to write full time. Shannon lives in Missouri with her husband and son, where conversations at the dinner table are more often about fictional things than things that actually happened. You can contact her at her website, http://www.shannonkbutcher.com/.

My Review:

Storyline:  This storyline was quite different then what I have read in other romantic suspense books and he makes another victim watch him kill another victim. Didn't like he did to the women and how he did it and why!

Characters: I really enjoyed Elise and Trent's characters because they were both stubborn, level-headed and they both were well written.

Romance: I really enjoyed reading the romance between Elise and Trent because it was sweet and it reminds me of really life too.  I'm glad he didn't take advantage of her when she is in pain that her sister is missing and they built their relationship slowly.

Killer: The killer acted normally in his day job and no one would suspect him.  Unfortunately he was a nutcase and I'm glad he got what was coming to him (it was quite fitting).  I really enjoyed reading that part!  LOL!

Reasons by Tracy Fabre

From the back cover of Reasons: Delphi Brent, seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident as a teenager, is ready to spend the summer with old family friends when her parents make a distressing confession: the driver of the car that nearly killed her was one of the three sons of the Laughlin family she's about to visit. She also falls in love with one of the Laughlin brothers, which wasn't part of the plan at all.

Death Swatch: A Scrapbooking Mystery (Berkley Prime Crime Mysteries) (Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Death Swatch" the 6th book in her Scrapbooking series by Laura Childs.

From Publishers Weekly

A murder in the midst of Mardi Gras propels Childs's enjoyable sixth Scrapbooking mystery (after 2007's Frill Kill). Carmela Bertrand, the owner of the New Orleans scrapbook shop Memory Mine, and her best friend, Ava Gruiex, are eager to begin the festivities with a party hosted by their float designer pal, Jekyl Hardy. But the discovery of the garroted Archie Baudier, Jekyl's assistant, puts a damper on the fun. In their efforts to solve the murder, Carmela and Ava encounter a host of eccentric characters, including a sullen Russian, a rare coin dealer, a meek curator of the local historical society and all manner of costumed party-goers. Carmela, in the process of a divorce, also meets dapper police lieutenant Edgar Babcock, who might be unappreciative of her investigative efforts but provides some romantic heat.

From Booklist

Scrapbooking store owner Carmela Bertrand and her good friend Ava find float designer Archie Baudier as he lies dying, strangled with barbed wire at a Mardi Gras party. A friend of the victim's asks Carmela to find the murderer, so she begins an investigation into who would want Baudier dead. Is it a rival float designer or someone who wants his coin collection? The investigation quickly becomes a treasure hunt when Carmela learns that Baudier was searching for pirate Jean Lafitte’s legendary buried treasure. As the investigation proceeds, and as the soon-to-be-divorced Carmela deals with the romantic feelings she has for New Orleans police lieutenant Edgar Babcock, the city gears up for and then attempts to enjoy Mardi Gras in the wake of Katrina.

The cops suspect Giovanni, Ava's sexy new tarot card reader, whose brother, Santino, is Amber's ex-boyfriend. Carmela and Ava become determined to uncover the truth and throw themselves headlong into danger, filling in as models for the big Halloween night unveiling of Moda Chadron's newest fashion creations, snooping around New Orleans and even venturing into the creepy bayou. Childs rounds out the story with several scrapbooking and crafting tips plus a passel of mouth-watering Louisiana recipes.

Sheriff Cas Larkin is determined to find the killer, and the last thing he needs is distractions like the increasing reports of missing cattle and other livestock. But as he digs deeper, Cas uncovers another mystery–a strange “club” the members are afraid to talk about, and for good reason. One of the recruits is brutally beaten when he refuses to take the club’s activities seriously. He also refuses to talk about those activities–until they turn turn deadly. There’s something dark and sinister going on in Merrivale, and if Cas can’t figure out what it is and put a stop to it, there’ll be the devil to pay.

WRITERS, COOKS, AND CRUSADERS

None of the above mentioned can ever retire. A writer has to write. A cook has to cook. And a crusader is going to get involved in whatever problem is currently bugging his neighbors, his state, or the general public. Only lack of traveling money will slow him down and not by much, what do you think marches are for?

A writer has to write and even with the economy in the toilet there are so many publishers and formats to choose from what you've written is sure, if you keep at it, to make it in one or more of them.

Before my first books were published, my writing group - to encourage us to send things out - ran a contest on who could garner the most rejection letters. I searched the NET and Writers Market and got busy sending out what I had finished and was hopefully-ready to submit. It wasn't long before my mailman was bringing me everything but advance checks. The passes, and photocopy rejections were the only category in the mailbox that matched the charity and survey drives. There were also flowery ones; ones who sounded like they did like my work-well, sorta. There were also some publishers and agents who asked questions; pointed out helpful things; and sent encouraging notes. These glimmers of hope were helpful to all of us in the group and we pored over them reading every word. At that time I was writing a humor column for a weekly newspaper in Memphis and got material for several articles from the rejections. The "don't go this to your book" ones were good for the most laughs so they were probably helpful to some other people as well. I learned a lot; got named Queen of Rejection; and won a book on dialogue. All of us wrote down the names of all the editors and agents who had said anything at all encouraging.

Not long after that I got my first contract on a historical romance-suspense novel and added crossing genres to my worry list.

Yes, dear reader, it was worth the effort; I've had more novels published in other fiction genres; it was worth the effort; and I'm still writing.

The above experiences were only a few of the bumps on the road to success. A couple of them I could have used in a horror story but I'll keep those to myself. Heck, I might want to sell the movie rights!

Jackie Griffey likes to read as well as write cozy mysteries and romantic suspense. She and her family, two cats, a Chihuahua, and a couple of wild bunnies live in Arkansas where she is working on another cozy mystery. You can visit her website at http://www.jackiegriffey.com/.

Rainwater [DECKLE EDGE] (Hardcover)

I've just finished reading "Rainwater" by Sandra Brown.

Product Description

The year is 1934. With the country in the stranglehold of drought and economic depression, Ella Barron runs her Texas boardinghouse with an efficiency that ensures her life will be kept in balance. Between chores of cooking and cleaning for her residents, she cares for her ten-year-old son, Solly, a sweet but challenging child whose misunderstood behavior finds Ella on the receiving end of pity, derision, and suspicion.

When David Rainwater arrives at the house looking for lodging, he comes recommended by a trusted friend as "a man of impeccable character." But Ella senses that admitting Mr. Rainwater will bring about unsettling changes.

However, times are hard, and in order to make ends meet, Ella's house must remain one hundred percent occupied. So Mr. Rainwater moves into her house...and impacts her life in ways Ella could never have foreseen.

The changes are echoed by the turbulence beyond the house walls. Friends and neighbors who've thus far maintained a tenuous grip on their meager livelihoods now face foreclosure and financial ruin. In an effort to save their families from homelessness and hunger, farmers and cattlemen are forced to make choices that come with heartrending consequences.

The climate of desperation creates a fertile atmosphere for racial tensions and social unrest. Conrad Ellis -- privileged and spoiled and Ella's nemesis since childhood -- steps into this arena of teeming hostility to exact his vengeance and demonstrate the extent of his blind hatred and unlimited cruelty. He and his gang of hoodlums come to embody the rule of law, and no one in Gilead, Texas, is safe. Particularly Ella and Solly.

In this hotbed of uncertainty, Ella finds Mr. Rainwater a calming presence. She is moved by the kindness he shows other boarders, Solly...and Ella herself. Slowly, she begins to rely on his soft-spokenness, his restraint, and the steely resolve of his convictions.

And on the hottest, most violent night of the summer, those principles will be put to the ultimate test.

From acclaimed bestselling author Sandra Brown comes a powerfully moving novel celebrating the largess and foresight of a great bygone generation. It tells a story that bears witness to a bittersweet truth: that love is worth whatever price one must pay for it.

My Review:

I thought this one is Sandra's best book even though I have my favs by her.

The romance between David and Ella was sweet and there were two love scenes but they weren't graphic.  I thought they were perfect for each other and they definately both needed each other.

The events they go through is true during this time period and there is alot of prejudice.

Bound to Shadows (Riley Jensen, Guardian, Book 8) (Mass Market Paperback)

I've just finished reading "Bound to Shadows" the 8th book in her Riley Jensen series by Keri Arthur.

Product Description

In the darkness, demons come out to play . . .
and someone must bring their sins to light.

Part vampire, part werewolf, Riley Jenson knows what can happen when vamps don’t play well with others. But she’s never seen anything like this: a series of brutal murders surrounding the latest hot spot for vampire-human hookups—and the victims aren’t just killed, they’re beheaded. Now Riley is launching into action, toying with a seductive—and highly suspicious—club owner, and finding herself in the middle of another mystery: women being killed one by one, without a trace of violence.

For Riley, solving multiple cases—in a world going mad with human and vampire passions—would have been tough enough. Instead she has two jealous lovers on her hands: Kye Murphy, the amber-eyed werewolf who makes Riley’s wolf blood howl—and Quinn, the cool, elegant vamp who has over a thousand years’ experience at fulfilling women’s desires. While she’s busy juggling these two sexy beasts, Riley’s detective work takes a stunningly violent turn. Finding a murderer is now a matter of life and death. Especially since the killer has long since found her . . .

About the Author

Keri Arthur received a "Perfect 10" from Romance Reviews Today and was nominated for Best Shapeshifter in PNR's PEARL Awards and in the best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Awards. She lives with her daughter in Melbourne, Australia.

My Review:

NO!  Keri killed off one of my favorite characters just like Kim Harrison did!  I'm glad that his killer was killed by Riley's hand.  That person really deserved it but I thought it was too quick!  Should have been tortured first, LOL!

Glad to see Quinn, Rhoan and Liander!  Loved the little doggie!
