Chris Karlsen Byzantine Gold Blurb Blitz Tour with Giveaway

BLURB:

A sunken warship from the Byzantine Era carrying an unusual cargo of gold has been found off the coast of Northern Cyprus. News of the valuable cache has attracted the attention of a terrorist cell. They plan to attack the recovery team’s campsite and steal the artifacts. On the Black Market, the sale of the relics will buy them additional weapons.

Charlotte Dashiell, an American archaeologist, and her lover, Atakan Vadim, a Turkish government agent, are scheduled to be part of the recovery team that brings up the artifacts. While en route to Cyprus, they find themselves caught in the crosshairs of Maksym Tischenko, a Ukrainian contract killer bent on revenge. Charlotte, Atakan and Tischenko share a grim history. As a result, Tischenko is a man who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal — seeing them both dead.

EXCERPT

Charlotte answered on the fourth ring. Caller I.D. showed “restricted.”

“Hello.”

“They are called, Angelique tulips. You admired them in the hospital garden in Paris.”

Charlotte froze, holding her breath as she listened to the nightmare voice, remembering how his Eastern European accent rounded certain sounds and how he stressed the last syllables in his words. Called became cawl-d.

Tischenko.

“Everything in time,” he said and hung up.

Charlotte dropped the phone on the table. She turned to Atakan.

The shock must’ve shown on her face. “What is wrong?”

“That was Tischenko,” she said, finding her voice. “The flowers are from him. He was watching me in Paris when I was at the hospital. He—”

Atakan didn’t wait for her to finish. He rushed into the living room, grabbed his gun from the bookshelf, and ran out of the apartment.

Charlotte followed as he flew down the four flights of stairs to the street.

“Stop.” Catching up to him on the sidewalk, she hooked his elbow with her hand. Fearful an armed Tischenko hid nearby, she positioned herself in front of Atakan, thinking to shield him. “We can’t stand here. He could be anywhere taking aim at you right now.”

“Go back inside.”

“Not without you.” She tugged on his shirt, pulling him toward their building. “Atakan please, let’s leave. Call the Director.”

Atakan shoved her behind him. Silent, his eyes searched the dark doorways of neighboring apartment buildings and parked cars.

“Atakan please.”

“Get inside.”

She stepped in front of him again. “We stay here together or we leave together.”

An eternity of seconds passed. Neither moved or blinked.

They both jumped and turned at the bellow from the horn of a passing truck. Thankfully, the driver was waving to another coming the opposite direction. He never saw the man in the sling pointing a gun at him.

“Please,” she repeated.

Atakan nodded. He stopped at the building’s entry door and took a last look, surveying the street. “He moves us around like pawns in a private game.”

RS Review: Killing Time (One-Eyed Jacks) [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Killing Time" the 1st book in her new One-Eyed Jacks series by Cindy Gerard.

Product Description

“We can do this easy,” she whispered close to his ear as he groaned in agony, “or it can go real hard on you.”

Well, of course he wasn’t going to go easy.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cindy Gerard plunges readers into the heart of a seductive contest of wills between a hard-living hero and a beautiful rogue operative who is on a mission to dig up the secrets of his past. Tension sizzles in this pulse-pounding first adventure in Gerard’s action-packed new series as Eva Salinas lures Mike Brown from the sultry streets of Lima, Peru, to the desolate Idaho wilderness on the hunt for the cold-blooded traitor behind a fatal military operation that haunts them both.

About the Author

My Review:

Eight years ago Mike Brown was discharged from the military when an operation named "Slam Dunk" failed and most of his teammates were killed. Mike has been drowning his sorrows by getting drunk to forgot his guilt and shame. One night he gets the drop by a sexy woman who drugs and handcuffs him to a bed.

Eva Salinas lost her husband Ramon on this mission eight years ago.  Mike Brown was the fall guy and was discharged.  A file mysteriously appeared on her desk containing mission discrepancies.  She is determined to find out what happened that day and heads down south to confront Mike to get some answers.
They decide to team up and during their investigation they find out that someone is determined to make sure what happened in Afghanistan stays hidden.  They go to great lengths to make sure that happens (ex: sending an assassin after Eva and Mike).  Now Eva and Mike are on the run and he needs some help from some old friends.
It was great to see some old friends from Black Ops Inc. (Gabe Jones and Joe Green) helping in the investigation and appearing in the story.

The action was very nail biting, tense and high octave action with a hot and sizzling romance.

My Review:

Be-Ri is spending more time with Tsuyoshi and realizes he is a kind-hearted young man.  She shows him how to get to school and how to get home for a week and finally he gets it.

Mi-Hyuk her friend becomes jealous when she is spending time with Tsuyoshi and he sees they are getting closer.  He announces to everyone that she is his future wife and asks Be-Ri to be his girlfriend.  She doesn't take too kindly to that and beats him up.  The next day he hounds her by asking her who she likes which she responds the guy that all the girls have a crush on.  The guy hears her and asks her out since he is free.  In reality she thinks he is a jerk, she isn't interested in Mi-Hyuk and she doesn't even like Tsuyoshi.

Then Tsuyoshi's ex-girlfriend arrives in Korea distraught and forces herself back into his life which causes Be-Ri to become jealous.

I feel sorry for Tsuyoshi when he speaks in Korean it's broken up but you do get the general idea of what he is trying to say.  He has perfect hair all the time no matter what happens, a great sense of style and he loves his cat Doki.

My Review:

The characters remind me so much of the characters from Chocolat their previous series.

Tsuyoshi = E-Soh
Kang Be-Ri = Kim-Ji
Oppa/Tsuyoshi's uncle = E-Wan

Tsuyoshi is a rich spoil brat that is sent to Korea to learn his roots and when he shares a ride with the do-it yourself frugal Be-Ri Kang (who has a thing for her sister's boyfriend Oppa who lives with them as a tenant) the sparks definitely fly especially the spit.

The manhwa has lots of hot guys, hilarious laughing moments, two cute cats Gu-Nyang and Doki (Be-Ri Kang's cat Gu-Nyang talks), beautiful artwork and some interesting cultural jokes.

RS Review: The Presence [Hardcover]

I've finished "The Presence" by Heather Graham.

Product Description

The ultimate moneymaking plan — buy the ancient, run-down Scottish castle and turn it into a tourist destination. Toni Fraser and her friends will put on reenactments combining fact and fiction, local history, murder and an imaginary laird named Bruce MacNiall.

Just as someone arrives, claiming to actually be Laird MacNiall — a tall, dark, formidable Scot somehow familiar to Toni — the bodies of young women are found, dumped and forgotten in the nearby town.

But even stranger, how is it possible this laird exists? Toni invented Bruce MacNiall for the performance yet sinister, lifelike dreams suggest he's connected to the recent deaths. Bruce claims he wants to help catch the murderer. But even if she wants to, can Toni trust him when her visions seem to be coming from within the very eyes of the killer himself?

My Review:

Toni Fraser and her five best friends (married couple Gina and Ryan, partners Kevin and David and her Scottish cousin Thayer) rent an ancient run-down Scottish castle that belongs to Bruce MacNiall to re-enact events that combine fact and fiction, local history, murder and a made up laird named Laird MacNiall.

Then Bruce MacNiall arrives home to find his castle has been over-run by Americans.  He is angry and so is the group for being taken.  Bruce allays their fears by allowing them to run their tours for six months to help make up for their losses.

Meanwhile someone is killing and depositing prostitutes body in Tillingham forest which is on the edge of MacNiall's castle.  Bruce found the first body and Eban who takes care of the horses and the grounds found the second body.  Toni finds another body which everyone believes is Annie O'Hara the third girl reported to be missing.  Evidence collected proves it's the body of Annalise MacNiall Bruce's late wife.  Annalise is believed to have disappeared from this castle history but people thought she was strangled by the Laird because he believed she was cheating on him.  The tattered cloth found around her neck bears the mark belonging to Grayson Davis, the traitor to the highland people.

When Bruce returned to the castle he clashed with Toni (she was being witch to him and was always angry/yelling at him).  Gee what was her problem?

Also I didn't like how she jumped Bruce when she had a nightmare she saw him at the end of her blood with a bloody sword dripping with blood looking down at her.  She wants to feel alive and this is the only reason when they fall in bed.

Historical Review: Forbidden Love [Mass Market Paperback]

I've finished "Forbidden Love" by Karen Robards.

She was a girl when she left Maam’s Cross Court for school, but she has returned a woman, body and soul. Once Megan’s guardian, Justin, the sixth Earl of Weston, is soon her heart’s obsession. My Review:

Megan Kinkead is the 17 year old ward of 36 year old Justin, the sixth Earl of Weston.  He hasn't seen her in 12 years and finally confronts her when she runs away from school.  He follows her to his home in Ireland and he is smitten once he sees her dancing on the table.

When Justin gets injured after chasing after her she takes care of and falls in love with him.  He tries to deny their mutual attraction but eventually succumbs to her seduction.  Before he can tell her he is married his wife arrives and she is furious.  She leaves for London with his wife and flirts with other men for revenge.  Then she finds out she is pregnant with Justin's baby but keeps it a secret and tries to find a suitable man to marry. When her engagement is announced Justin becomes insanely jealous and kidnaps her.

Some stuff that bothered me:

1.  The 19 year age difference between Megan and Justin
2.  Justin was married when he bedded Megan
3.  Justin raped Megan after kidnapping her
4.  Justin slapped Megan when she was 8 months pregnant

This dark historical had steamy sexual chemistry, hot love scenes and emotional charged scenes.

Stefan Kanfer's The Eskimo Hunts in New York‏ Excerpt and Q/A

THE ESKIMO HUNTS IN NEW YORK ON SALE NOW!

Jordan Gulok is an Inuit, an Eskimo in common parlance, and a former Navy SEAL. In his freelance capacity he can do things — like tracking and on occasion killing malefactors — that are beyond the authority of the uniformed services. Jordan has an expense account and liberty to travel throughout the U.S. In turn, the U.S. government has plausible deniability should he ever get caught stretching or violating the law.

In THE ESKIMO HUNTS IN NEW YORK, Jordan’s assignment involves stopping a lethal international group who’s manufacturing illegal and sometimes toxic pharmaceuticals and selling them to victims in Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In one of the worst blizzards in the City’s history, subways, buses and taxis become useless. Even fire trucks and police cars are rendered immobile. But for Jordan cold weather is only a minor obstacle; after all, he grew up hunting polar bear and reindeer on ice and snow.

His targets are managing a multi-billion dollar business that has killed thousands, and they soon become aware of him as their Enemy Number One. The idea of a lone man bringing down their organization is unthinkable. In previous cases, Jordan always acted alone, but as the cartel closes in on him, he turns to Rose Ho, a possible love interest and operative in a regional office of the Department of the Navy.

Rose has great connections — for example, her wealthy father is the unofficial mayor of Chinatown — but are all her connections among the good guys? Can she provide the help he needs, or is she trouble in a green silk skirt?

Read an excerpt and a Q&A with Stefan.

Q: Your previous books were with such traditional publishers as Knopf, Random House, Simon & Schuster, Farrar Straus & Giroux, Doubleday. Why did you decide to choose an untraditional online publisher for your new book?

I’ve always preferred to stay a little ahead of the curve. When my colleagues were still using Royals and Underwoods, I switched to computers—this was made easy because Time magazine, where I worked as a writer and editor, was experimenting with a main frame setup. When everybody got on that, I bought a PC and learned a new computer language. And then another. And another after that.

Then I got a laptop, and an iPod and iPad when they debuted.

I could see changes coming to retail when I signed onto Amazon years ago. And I could see hidebound, clothbound publishers absolutely nonplussed by the changes wrought by Kindle and the iPad. The fact that my last book, TOUGH WITHOUT A GUN, a biography of Humphrey Bogart, landed on the New York Times bestseller list didn’t deter me from trying something new yet again.

Besides, I had written four bestselling biographies of show business icons, and I thought the string was running out. There are still one or two vanished celebrities who might be considered (indeed Knopf tendered an offer for yet another one), but I became intrigued with the thriller genre and wanted to try it again. I had written two such books years ago -- THE EIGHTH SIN was called a Holocaust thriller and was a Book of the Month Club selection.

I’m much too proactive to wait around for mainstream publishers to mull over a manuscript for months — their usual procedure these days, when the editors are waiting to see which way the cat will jump.

Moreover, those publishers can now offer writers only one thing that they can’t do for themselves: distribution. And with the demise of Borders there is only one powerhouse brick-and-mortar retailer: Barnes & Noble. As highly as I regard them, I know that Amazon, Smashwords and Apple grow more influential by the day.

Speaking of which, several months ago I arranged to have some of my early books offered on Amazon and Smashwords, using the electronic publisher StoneThread. When its publisher, Harvey Stanbrough, asked me whether I had something original, I sent him my manuscript. He offered to publish it with all deliberate speed, and I knew I had found my kind of ballplayer.

Q: Why did you decide to make your protagonist an Eskimo?

A: Several reasons went into the decision. I was in the army with Native Americans—young men who decided to leave the reservation to seek a career in the outside world via the armed forces. They brought some traditions with them, but they were anxious to get away from the insularity of the rez—and from the poverty and alcoholism they saw around them. Their stoicism, intelligence and resourcefulness were well worth chronicling. But there have already been many excellent novels with Native Americans as the main characters and sleuths—most notably Tony Hillerman’s outstanding Navajo series.

Years ago I met some Eskimos in Seattle, and I found them intriguing. I promised myself to do some research on the Inuit tribe when I bought some Eskimo art in Canada and chatted with some of the sculptors. Last year I made good on that promise, interviewing experts, digging around in old books rather than doing online googling. Perhaps the most memorable passage I came across is from Barry Lopez’s nonfiction book about the frozen north, Arctic Dreams:

“The darker side of the human spirit is not refined away by civilization. It is not something we are done with. Eskimo people, in my experience, have, still, a sober knowledge of their capacity for violence, but are reluctant to speak to it to whites because they have been taught that those are the emotions, the impulses, of primitives. We confuse the primitive with being deranged. They can humiliate you with a look that says they know better.”

It occurred to me that an Inuit would make an ideal protagonist—particularly if his non-Arctic life began when he became a scholarship student at Alaska University. There, Jordan Gulok’s mind would be opened in English Literature courses. His body would be enlightened by a series of intense, if short-lived, campus romances. And his self-confidence would be reinforced when the Navy Seals recruited him for two reasons: his intelligence in the classroom and his prowess as a hunter, a skill that began in the Tundra and carried over to the Alaskan forests.

He would be just as stoic as the American Indians to whom he is distantly related. He would also wind up at the top of his class in search-and-destroy military techniques. He would be sent into action in the Middle East, Near East and Europe, where he would exhibit a remarkable lack of fear, even when wounded in action.

For Jordan Gulok’s first adventure I put him in Manhattan, during one of the coldest winters in New York City history. The native dwellers — including the police — would of course be paralyzed by bad weather, as they always are. But to an Eskimo, who grew up on ice and snow, it would be a minor hindrance, something to be dealt with, not complained about.

Once Jordan becomes involved with the tracking down of criminals in New York, he goes from tourist to tracker, relentless and ruthless in his pursuit of mysterious figures who are not terrorists, who have no interest in politics — but who are mass murderers nonetheless.

Like those aforementioned Indians, Jordan considers himself free of the tribal past. But he, too, carries traditions with him, traditions that emerge in the involuntary memories of flashbacks and dreams — and, naturally enough, in the way he deals with danger as a freelance working in a clandestine arrangement with his once and future employer, the United States Navy.

Q: You’ve written three novels and a dozen nonfiction books. Why did you choose to return to fiction after a series of bestselling biographies and social histories? Is one genre harder than the other, or do they present very different problems to a writer?

I returned to the novel form because, frankly, I missed it. Over the years I almost forgot how much enjoyment I derived from creating and developing characters, placing them in romantic or hazardous situations, putting them in various neighborhoods, writing dialogue and working out plots that reflect our conflicted times.

In some ways writing nonfiction is harder because it requires a great deal of research and interviewing — particularly in the field of biography. I usually steep like a teabag in libraries for a year getting material, learning who the person is and why he or she became an icon. During that time I also talk to their colleagues and families to add to the portrait. Then, of course, comes the actual writing, which can take another year.

On the other hand, lives, as well as social histories, have a beginning, a middle and an end, and the chronology dictates the form. In that sense, nonfiction is easier — nothing is invented, everything is reported. The success of the book depends on the writer's interpretation of events, his insights and his prose style.

Fiction can be said to be easier because the writer makes it all up — save for the physical backgrounds and whatever historical events pertain to the action. But in another sense it’s harder than nonfiction, at least for me, because I don’t write sci fi or the adventures of impervious superheroes. In my view any successful thriller has to be credible; the protagonist, the colleagues, the villains, all have to be recognizable human beings. My central character is a troubled Eskimo with a military background. I set him down in unlikely but real places. When he outwits a foe it’s because he’s plausibly inventive, not because of a deus ex machina; when he’s hit by a bullet he bleeds.

Unfortunately, her ticket to a new beginning is in dire need of a laundry list of pricey improvements, many of which she’ll have to do herself. And until the house on Bay View Road is fit to be sold, the sole place Ellie will be traveling is the hardware store.
