“I won’t do it.” She tilted her head back. Drained the water. Threw the empty bottle into the sink, where it bounced twice before falling neck first into the garbage disposal. “Save your spiel. Don’t bother trying to change my mind, either. I won’t work with Sinclair again.”

Unprofessional? Perhaps. But theirs wasn’t any ordinary profession, so leeway was accepted — even expected — in all manner of things.

Now amusement tinged the director’s tone. “That’s what he said you said.”

They knew each other so well that when he paused she visualized the head of one of the most vital arms of the national security “octopus” running his fingers through his four-hundred-dollar haircut. She’d seen him do it on a handful of occasions, usually when his Ivy League education and years of intense counter-intelligence training both failed him.

“I’ll say it again.” She wrapped her free arm around her middle, hugging herself and leaning a hip against the countertop. “He can go fu—”

“I get it, Nic. Loud and clear, I get it. It’s beyond me to visualize how anyone could accomplish the feat but I’m under no misconceptions — you want the man to have intercourse with himself.”

“He’s no man,” she whispered.
