Guest Post: Home Is Wherever I’m With You by M.L. Buchman

Defining home is often a challenge for my characters as I think it is for most people in the real world after they’ve left the “safe” haven of childhood. Even when that childhood has been unsafe, it has at least been known.

In my mid-30s I took an 18-month solo bicycle trip around the world. And one of the questions I asked of other travelers was: “How do you define home?” The most common answer? “Well, me stuff’s at Mum’s, so I guess that’s home.” When asked in turn, I typically replied, “A family of friends and a bed without bedbugs.” Which had the advantage of being both true and funny.

But there was one reply, given by a gruff Danish man in his 60s while we were at a rooming house in central Indonesia together, that was the best and simplest answer I ever found; he pointed at his wife. I envied him that until I finally met my wife and stepdaughter and discovered exactly what he meant.

Romance stories are like that. Home is usually when they find each other.

In my newest book, Bring on the Dusk, Michael and Claudia are the exception to this among all of my characters in the Night Stalkers series. Michael and Claudia are both rooted in place rather than family; among the redwoods and out in the Arizona desert respectively.

One of the things that these two characters did to fascinate me was they both went there for the silence that allowed them deeper connection to themselves. It was the place where they were most authentically themselves, alone in those environments. My favorite scenes in the book are those moments of sharing their origins with each other, because only there are their defenses stripped away until only honesty remains. That is the place where they are each truly “home.”
