RS Review: The Night Is Watching (Krewe of Hunters) Mass Market Paperback

I've finished "The Night is Watching" the 9th book in her Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham.

Product Description

The dead of night

The Old West town of Lily, Arizona, is home to the Gilded Lily, a former theater and bawdy house. These days, it offers theatrical productions geared to tourists, but the recent discovery of a skull, a real skull, among the props and costumes shakes everyone up.

So, who do you call? The Krewe of Hunters, a special FBI unit of paranormal investigators. In this case, it's agent Jane Everett. Jane's also a talented artist who creates images of the dead as they once were. But the Krewe always works with local law enforcement, and here that means Sloan Trent, former Houston cop and now sheriff. His great-great-grandmother was an actress at the Gilded Lily and she's not resting in peace.

Then more remains appear in the nearby desert. As they search for answers, using all the skills at their disposal, Jane and Sloan find themselves falling into danger — and into love.

My Review:

Storyline:  We are transported to the Old West in the town of Lily in Arizona.   The town is known for The Gilded Lady a former theatre and brothel.  The main drag has been restored to it's former glory and it's rumored to be haunted by ghosts. The old jailhouse is now a hotel where you can stay in outlaw cells and you can also stay at the Guilded Lady, dine in a A-Class Restaurant and watch nightly theatrical productions.

Characters:  Sloan Trent is a former Houston cop who quit his job and became sheriff when his uncle became ill.  He stayed on because he enjoys the quiet life.  When he receives a call that an old skull wearing a wig is found at The Gilded Lady he calls his former partner and friend Logan.  Logan now heads up Jane's FBI team and when Sloan asks for a forensic artist he sends in Jane Everett to reconstruct the skull.

Sloan was a sexy, smart, dedicated, level-headed and well respected.  At first he was quite cold towards Jane but he was attracted to her.  Once he thawed their romance was hot and steamy.

I wanted to bop Sloan on the head at the beginning because of the way he first treated Jane.  He judged her without finding out what she was capable of.

Jane was smart, well respected, a great artist and capable FBI agent.  Glad she was able to communicate with the spirits and able to take care of herself.

Romance:  The first meeting didn't go so well between Sloan and Jane because he was acting like a jerk towards her.  You can feel the chemistry between them even though they are civil towards each other at first until Sloan finally thaws out.  Then it becomes hot, heavy and steamy!

Villain(s):  The villains all had personality and were motivated by greed and egos.  I was surprised at all the players and who some of them were.

4/5
