Product Description

The war was over . . .

But Shannon McCahy and Malachi Slater, embittered by the conflict, still fought a raging battle of wills all their own. A Yankee whose only solace was the land she had struggled to save, Shannon hated the hot-tempered Malachi, a Rebel on the run who stood for all she had come to despise.

Yet as jayhawkers and bushwhackers descended upon the lawless Missouri border, the two joined forces in a desperate search for their endangered loved ones. They clashed relentlessly, but as time ran out they were forced to realize there was something between them far stronger than hatred . . .

Follow My Blog Friday #71

If you are new to the FF fun, Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop that expands your blog following by a joint effort between bloggers. Feature & Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, myself of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Now to make this FF interesting we do a FEATURE blogger. If you are interested in becoming a Feature click on the drop down link above FEATURES > Features and Follow Friday and get on the waiting list!  It is also required, that if you participate you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee and Alison Can Read) and the two Feature blogs.

This Meme is hosted by Rachel from Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read on Fridays.

To join the fun and make now book blogger friends, just follow these simple rules:

1. Follow the Follow My Book Blog Friday Host {Parajunkee.com} {Alisoncanread.com}and any one else you want to follow on the list.

2. Follow our Featured Bloggers - In Which Ems Reviews Books and Reading in the Corner.

3. Put your Blog name and URL in the Linky thing.

4. Grab the button up there and place it in a post, this post is for people to find a place to say hi in your comments

5. Follow Follow Follow as many as you can

6. If someone comments and says they are following you, be a dear and follow back. Spread the Love...and the followers

7. If your new to the Follow Friday Hop, comment and let me know, so I can stop by and check out your blog!

The Friday Follow Feature is ...

In which Ems reviews books …

I’m a 30-something avid reader, determined to share the published word. I’m a dreamer and freely admit to sometimes preferring the company of fictional characters to real people. I’m perfectly content to spend my time in solitude with a great book. I love to write, read, and otherwise exercise my creative abilities.I was once asked why I read. Really, the only answer I can give to that is, how can I NOT read? I’d much rather read than breathe. For reals. Same deal for writing. It’s just a part of me and always will be.

Reading in the Corner

HTML code:<a href="http://readinginthecorner.blogspot.com"><img border="0" width="90%" src="http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa322/readingcorner11/RITC_button.jpg" /></a>

"Hi, y'all! My name is Jessi and I blog over at ""Reading in the Corner."" Why did I start blogging? Well, because I failed at gardening, sewing, scrapbooking, cooking/baking, cleaning, and all things domestic. Okay, but seriously, I started blogging in February 2011 because I was reading so many books and I HAD to share them with someone (even if my only followers were my sister and my husband)! Since then, FF and many other memes have helped me discover the book blogging community and make so many blogger friends in the last 6 months! It's been really exciting for me to get to know you through your blogs.

Currently, I am a very BUSY person. I work a full-time job in academic library administration, a part time job in public library public services, and I take on graduate school in my spare time. (Can you guess my major?) In all my other spare time, you can generally find me curled up in some part of my little house in the country with my husband, two cats, and a good book. I currently have a minor obsession with YA dystopian and YA PNR novels, but at the moment I'm reading ""outside the box"" for my book club with ""Akata Witch"" by Nnedi Okorafor and ""Stuck in Neutral"" by Terry Trueman."

Q. If you could have dinner with your favorite book character, who would you eat with and what would you serve?

I would love to have dinner with Zsadist, Bella and Nella and we would have a feast.

I would also love to have dinner with Zarek and we would have steak and seafood.

18 and Over Book Blogger #12

18 and Over Book Blogger Follow is a weekly feature that begins on Fridays and runs through the weekend hosted by Crystal from Reading Between the Wines and Kelly at Secrets of a Book Lover.

The 18 Over Book Blogger Follow is a Friday blog hop with the objective to find and visit other book blogs that share the same interest as you, namely books geared towards the 18 and over crowd, and make new friends!

How to join in:

You should run a book blog that features and reviews mostly adult reads, some Y.A.’s are okay but 18 &  Over adult reads should be your majority.

Make a separate post for the 18 & Over Book Blogger Follow on your blog.

Copy the html for the button above and place it at the top of your post.

List and answer the ‘Question of the Week.’

Place your name and blog title in the linky below and the url for a direct link to your post

Visit the other blogs on the list. If you like what you see make sure to leave a comment and follow so the blog owner knows you stopped by and can return the favor. Following each blog is not mandatory but I know it is always appreciated, and if someone comments saying they’re a new follower it’s polite to follow back. It’s always nice to spread the 18 and Over Book Blog love!

Question of the Week:

If you could dress-up a favorite book character for Halloween, who would it be & what would they wear?

I would dress up Bones in a Zorro costume.

Then I would dress up Zarek in a Roman costume and then I would hightail it out of there before he threw lightning bolts at me.

I would dress Zsadist head to toe in leather.

Book Blogger Hop #22

This Meme is hosted by Jennifer from Crazy for Books on Fridays.

RULES:

Your blog should have content related to books, including, but not limited to book reviews.

1.  Before you add your link, you must post about the Hop on your blog and link directly back to THIS POST (not just my domain, but the direct post for the Hop).  The linky is going to review the link that you enter in your submission, looking for a link to this post on your blog.  If it doesn’t find one, your link will not be approved.  This is called back linking and I had to institute it because people were taking advantage of the Hop and getting some free advertising without promoting the Hop themselves.  You can read more about this here.

2. While you are creating your post, answer the following question (there’s a new prompt each week)!

“What is your favorite Halloween costume?

Even if you don’t celebrate, what kinds of costumes do you like?”

My favorite Halloween costume was my Cleopatra outfit in high school.  The kind of costumes I like are the sexy but tasteful maid and cop outfits.

3. Now it’s time to enter your blog link into the linky below (after the list of instructions!).

Five Ways to Steampunk Your Halloween

With Halloween literally just days away, you might be looking for something fun and different to do this year. Why not try steampunk?

Some say Steampunk is what happens when Goths discovered brown, but it’s really much more than that. Steampunk is neo-Victorian science fantasy. I’d say science fiction, but really fantasy is a more apt description because so many of the inventions, like the lightening-powered air ship in Stardust, or the Aetheographic transmitters in Souless, have very little to do with actual science, and owe a far greater debit to imagination. Still confused? Think H.G. Wells’ Time Machine or Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or that Will Smith movie, Wild Wild West. Steampunk happens in a setting similar to the Victorian age, where there can be fantastic things( computers, automatons, air ships, and paranormal creatures) as long as it all happens with Victorian era components (meaning no plastic, transistors or electronics).

So what can you do to Steampunk your Halloween?

1. Pick a Fun Costume! The great thing is you can be so many different things. Why be just a plain pirate, when you could be an airship pirate instead? What about a western cardsharp with a clockwork card-dealing device up his sleeve? An intrepid explorer with a pith helmet and goggles, or perhaps a gentleman or lady of high society with an exquisite top hat and cane? Need more ideas: Check out the photos at http://www.steamcon.org/SCII/gallery.php?a=1

2. Get Into the Spirit! Victorian’s were nuts about the paranormal. They held séances. They held mummy unwrapping parties. They invited tarot card readers, palm readers and spiritualists to their dinner parties. If you’re hosting an event, add a little more of the supernatural into it in Victorian fashion by having a Steampunk-style activity. Maybe you can unwrap a mummy (blow up doll wrapped in toilet paper or paper towels) to find prizes. Trick is to do it blindfolded! Or perhaps have a Magic 8 Ball or invite someone who reads tarot cards to the party.

3. Set the Stage! Steampunk isn’t just a clothing style, it’s an aesthetic/sub-culture. There’s music, décor, food, art, literature and so much more that make up what is Steampunk today. Try downloading some Steampunk Band music for your party, like Abeny Park, Clockwork Dolls, Unwoman, Panic! At the Disco, Voltaire or any of them listed at http://steampunk.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_steampunk_bands

4. Make some Treats! Try making some scones. Here’s some pumpkin spice scones with an irresistible ginger molasses icing http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/10/18/pumpkin-spice-scone-recipe/ and don’t forget Victorian’s loved tea too! Consider trying a couple of different flavors of hot tea served with a dollop of half-and-half and sweetner, or, if you prefer something with a little more kick, what about a hot buttered rum http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/hot-buttered-rum-mix/detail.aspx

5. Celebrate Like it’s 1899! Not interested in going out or hosting a big party? Turn out the lights, burn some candles or light a few oil lamps, and read a great book, or play board games or charades with the family.

My Review:

Gaby Summerhill's husband Peter has been dead for three years and her family haven't had Christmas since then.  Now she's getting married on Christmas Day but her children and even her groom doesn't know who! So finally Gaby and family will spend Christmas together.   She's been proposed to by three different men who is her best friends.

Loved getting to know Gaby and her four grown children Claire, Emily, Lizzie and Seth.  Each is dealing with problems of their own.  Claire is in an abusive relationship with her husband who torments her mentally and psychically.   She finally has had enough and kicks him to the curb but their children adores him.  Her son Gus is smoking weed and drinking and getting drunk just like his dad.

Emily is married to a successful doctor but is passed over as a partner at her Law Firm.  She quits and now has to come up with a job strategy.

Lizzie is dealing with her husband Mike's cancer and trying to keep up an optimistic outlook for their eight-year old daughter Tallelah.

Seth is dealing with a rejection from his publisher and his girlfriend tries to cheer him up while support him too.  He feels like a failure.

This was a very fast read and I finished it in a couple of hours.  Loved how close the family is and how they support each other in time of need.  Really surprised that Mike is such a jokester while suffering a terminal illness.

4/5

Thanks Hachette Book Group for sending me this book to review, greatly appreciated!
