Time of Death (In Death) [Paperback]

I've finished "Time of Death" by J.D. Robb.

Product Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author: three popular Eve Dallas stories together for the first time in one volume.

J. D. Robb's In Death novels have been praised as "Law and  Order: SVU - in the future" (Entertainment Weekly). Now, together for the first time in one volume, are three stories that spotlight Lieutenant Eve Dallas doing what she does best: solving crime with skill, integrity, and passion.

Eternity in Death

A seductive killer is luring in victims with a promise of the impossible - immortality. Eve Dallas must strip away the fantasy to catch the coldhearted madman.

Ritual in Death

Eve is plunged into the violent aftermath of a ritualistic murder - and into the mind of an alleged witness who can't remember a thing to save his life.

Missing in Death

When a woman disappears from a New York City ferry, it's a case that only Eve Dallas can solve - because the woman didn't jump, and yet she's not on board.

My Review:

Eve was focused and dedicated in these stories.  She was very determined to prove enough evidence that the villains were arrested.  I really enjoyed the way Eve was very through with her investigation and the way her and her team work so well together.

Roarke plays a very big role in helping and providing Eve with evidence and information to solve her crimes.  He also provides some much needed relaxing love making and boy are they hot!

In the first story a very young socialite believes that her lover is a vampire who will make her eternally young and beautiful. Eve and her team visit a vampire nightclub in underground New York.

In the second story Roarke and Eve are attending a party which is gate-crashed by a naked man holding a knife and covered in blood. When Eve follows the blood trail, she finds a young woman ritually slain.

In the third story, it is a locked room mystery set on a ferry boat. The victim and her killer vanish from the ferry.

On top of that, her homeroom teacher is a current idol, the headmaster was a record-breaking singer, and the academy itself is a chaotic place where anything can happen. My Review:

In the first story everyone is still at the mountain retreat when the only way out gets flooded and blocked with mud.  The phone is out and they can't reach anyone from the outside world.  So they decide they need food and Ryo happened to pick some mushrooms but they are the deadly kind.  So it's decided that Ryo, Tonomine and Yamato will go pick some food.  Tonomine volunteered to go and watch over Ryo in Asuka's place.  Asuka feels bad so he decides to cheer everyone up by making paper lanterns which everyone loves.

Ryo has caught a big fish and all of them are on their way back when an avalanche starts and Ryo is right in it's path.  Tonomine saves her by throwing his body over hers and when it's over they discover he has a sprained ankle.  Ryo piggy back Tonomine but he feels embarrassed because it's not manly.

At the end they have a big festival and Ryo asks Asuka would he like to dance.  They are on their way where everyone is dancing when they see Tonomine leaning against a tree.  He says "wait" and he wants to repay a favor so he gives Ryo a make up makeover.  Wow she did look different!

In the second story we are introduced to Suzaki Oji the school nurse who is such a womanizer and flirt .  We see girls swooning and fainting at his feet.  One day Asuka is in the library and he finds a poem in a book which he really likes.  He writes a letter back to the poet and everyday he goes back to find another poem.  One day Suzaki finds a poem and he announces to everyone he will find out the poet is and he said he is silly.  Asuka replies back, "the poet isn't silly".  Suzaki challenges Asuka to see who will get the most Valentine's chocolates and if he wins he would continue to find to find who the poet is and if Asuka wins he would stop trying to find out who the poet is.

Then we see Asuka getting some candy from classmates, friends and even the bakery owner gives him chocolates from a friend he said.  We also see Suzaki flirting with the girls and even managing to take some candies meant for Asuka.  Then the final day comes and the total for Asuka is 249 and the Suzaki's is 250 when all of sudden Ryo appears and says sorry she was late making chocolates and wants to give them to Asuka.  Suzaki rushes behind her and starts whispering into her ear trying to sway her decision.  She quickly sidesteps away from him and gives them to Asuka.  Asuka says, "he can't take them but only from the one he loves" and proceeds to give them back to all the girls, etc.  He accepts Ryo's and Suzaki looks like he is in shock.  He is talking to Mr. Amasaki and says when he looks at Asuka and Ryo he wants to find true love like that.  It looks like he has been converted too!

In the last story Asuka's mom returns to live with Asuka and work at the school every day. Asuka stresses out because he can't relax and be himself until the bakery owner starts sponsoring a men only baking instruction days at his home. Asuka, Tonomine, the FreakDust bandmates and Ryo's grandfather all show up to learn how to bake. They all have so much fun that the baker decides to continue offering the classes. Asuka's mom knows about the bakery  but not about Asuka's involvement in the classes.

We also learn who Asuka's dad is at the end and we also find out the bakery owner has a younger brother who is news reporter.

Tonomine has a bigger part in this volume and he is a excellent make up artist.  It really looks like he is thawing out some more.  It looks like he is starting to respect Ryo.

Eve [Hardcover]

I've finished "Eve" the 1st book in her new trilogy by Iris Johansen.

Product Description

The #1 bestselling author delivers the first in a trilogy that will begin to answer questions that have haunted her legion of fans for over a decade, in her newest novel of breathtaking suspense.

Eve Duncan’s mission in life is to bring closure to the families who have experienced the agony of a missing child. As a forensic sculptor, she is able to piece together bones, create a face, and bring an identity to a child who would have otherwise gone unidentified…maybe forever. Eve is brilliant, and driven, and tormented -- because her own daughter, Bonnie, was taken from her years ago. And Eve has never discovered what happened to her. But now a name from the past resurfaces, thanks to CIA agent Catherine Ling who knows all too well what it’s like to lose a child. After teaming up with Agent Ling to find her missing son, Eve and Catherine share a bond forged by their mutual pain. Now, Catherine challenges Eve with a name: John Gallo. A man from Eve’s past. A man, seemingly raised from the dead, whose whereabouts are unknown. Could Gallo be the missing piece to the puzzle that has haunted Eve for years? Why was he in Atlanta just before Bonnie’s disappearance? With a brilliant narrative that goes back to Eve Duncan’s early life, exploring her history and motivations like no other novel before, Eve reveals long-guarded secrets and is guaranteed to leave Johansen fans panting for more — soon to come in Quinn (October 2011).

My Review:

Storyline:   Eve is a forensic sculptor who has dedicated her life to recapturing the face and images of adults and children to help families with closure and to bring their love one back home.  She names each skull and identifies with the unknown person makes her job rewarding.

Eve has been with Detective Joe Quinn for many years and still feels the heartache when Bonnie her seven-year old daughter was kidnapped.  Neither her body or bones have ever been found.

Then Catherine Ling springs a surprise on Eve that John Gallo who she thought was dead killed on a mission is still alive but missing.  It brings up resurfaced old feelings which emerges which causes Joe to be angry and jealous and results are dangerous as all of the players come into focus and the truth about where he has been is revealed.

We learn Eve's mother was a drug-user and always picks the wrong guys to go home with.

The first time John Gallo and Eve's meeting, their relationship and back-story is vividly and clearly told in this novel. John is definitely charismatic, handsome and totally into Eve at first glance. He's her knight in protective armor coming to her rescue when several boys try to attack her.  John is attracted to her gutsy manner for  sticking up for her friend and attempts to seduce Eve to enter a romantic relationship with him.

We also learn about the brutal torture Gallo went through during his captivity by the Koreans after being betrayed by his own country and how it has affected him to this day.  Sometimes he gets really angry spells and you never know what will happen.

As you begin to get more facts she goes after John and finds him and many others that she would rather avoid. Queen seems to have a strong hold on John as does the man they are seeking Paul Black. She finds there is much more as she also reaches out to Montalvo someone else who is also cunning, dangerous and also wants Eve.

When Joe is injured in one of their encounters and returns home Eve starts to work on her latest skull only to be enticed and lured to Milwaukee and into the arms of John Gallo. When Joe reads her note and calls Catherine they immediately go in search of Eve hoping to find her before it's too late. But she will not give up until Bonnie's bones and skull is found and she recreates the face and is finally laid to rest.

When John expresses his true feelings and the reason he set up Eve to come to him she learns more about Paul Black and finds out about his handiwork as he kills someone close to John, seriously injures another and kidnaps a child. Reflecting back to Queen and his relationship with him he recounts to Eve the possible leverage he might have to negotiate with him. That would be an incriminating ledger whose information would link him to some serious allies in Korea.

Why Paul Black is so uncontrollable stems as far back as his childhood when he killed a classmate?

Characters:  Eve is relentless, persistent, vulnerable, hardheaded and definitely unrelenting when it comes to getting what she wants and going after it.

Joe is a former Navy Seal now an Atlanta police detective who never thought he would fall in love with Eve during the investigation of Bonnie's kidnapping.

Paul Black is a psychopathic pedophile killer who is an assassin for the CIA who really enjoys his kills.

Nate Queen is a rogue CIA agent who controls both of them for money!  He even hires other assassins to kill both Paul and John.

Romance:  The romance between John and Eve was very sexy and steamy but not love at first sight.  More like lust a lot of lust!

Killer:  Nate Queen is willing to kill anyone that would interfere with him getting back the Ledger from John or anything to do with money.

Paul Black was really sadistic in his killings and really enjoyed the thrill of it.  He is truly psychotic!

“What is the one ARC you would love to get your hands on right now?”
