Born in Blood (The Sentinels) Mass Market Paperback

Sergeant Duncan O'Conner has seen it all before. Beautiful erotic dancer murdered at home, no suspect, no motive. But there's one clue: she's missing her heart. It's enough to make the hard-bitten Kansas City cop enlist the help of a necro - one of the dead-channeling freaks who live in the domed city of nearby Valhalla. It's a long shot, but desperate crimes call for desperate measures. Unlike the other "high-bloods" in Valhalla, Callie Brown considers her abilities a gift, not a curse. But when she reads the dancer's final thoughts, she senses a powerful presence blocking her vision. This is no ordinary homicide. This is the work of a legendary necromancer who controls souls. A ravenous force that will put Callie's skills to the test, O'Conner's career at risk, and both their hearts on the line literally.

Scent of Roses Mass Market Paperback

Elizabeth doesn't believe in ghosts.

But this time she has no choice.

Family counselor Elizabeth Conner isn't sure what to think when Maria Santiago comes to her for help. Pregnant and terrified, Maria claims to be visited each night by the ghost of a little girl, warning her to flee. Her husband, Miguel, a migrant worker at Harcourt Farms in the San Joaquin Valley, dismisses her fears as hormonal changes. Sympathetic to the young woman, Elizabeth agrees to help by contacting Miguel's employers, who own the cottage where the young couple lives.

Elizabeth immediately picks up on the deep enmity betweenthe two Harcourt brothers: Carson, the handsome scion running the estate for his incapacitated father, and Zack, the rebellious black sheep. While Carson is more interested in Elizabeth than in her concerns, Zack grudgingly agrees to help her look into the history of the house.

But even as unexpected desire draws them together, Elizabeth and Zack feel something dark and disturbing at the house. And when the cloying scent and lingering chill of pure evil surround her, Elizabeth knows something terrible has happened here before, something that has its roots in murder.

RS Review: The Stranger You Know (Forensic Instincts) Hardcover

I've finished "The Stranger You Know" the 3rd book in Forensic Instincts series by Andrea Kane.

It begins with a chilling phone call to Casey Woods. And ends with another girl dead.

College-age girls with long red hair. Brutally murdered, they're posed like victims in a film noir. Each crime scene is eerily similar to the twisted fantasy of a serial offender now serving thirty years to life — a criminal brought to justice with the help of Forensic Instincts.

Call. Kill. Repeat. But the similarities are more than one psychopath's desire to outdo another. As more red-haired victims are added to the body count, it becomes clear that each one has been chosen because of a unique connection to Casey — a connection that grows closer and closer to her.

Now the Forensic Instincts team must race to uncover the identity of a serial killer before his ever-tightening circle of death closes in on Casey as the ultimate target. As the stalker methodically moves in on his prey, his actions make one thing clear: he knows everything about Casey. And Casey realizes that this psychopathic won't stop until he makes sure she's dead.

About the Author

Andrea Kane’s psychological thriller THE GIRL WHO DISAPPEARED TWICE became an instant New York Times bestseller, the latest in a long string of smash hits. THE LINE BETWEEN HERE AND GONE is the next exhilarating installment in the Forensic Instincts series. With a worldwide following and novels published in over twenty languages, Kane is also the author of eight romantic thrillers and fourteen historical romances. She lives in New Jersey with her family.

My Review:

Young college girls with red hair are being brutally killed and found posed like in film noir which is the signature of a serial killer currently in jail. Forensics Instincts are brought in to help a dying man find his daughter and as they investigate they find a connection linking to Casey.

The copycat serial killer seems to know everything about Casey and is determined to make her his ultimate goal.

I really enjoy the development growth of Casey and Kyle's relationship because they both understand and respect each other.  Glad they both finally said the L word to each other.

I find Claire and Ryan's growing relationship quite funny because they are popular opposites of each other and all they do is fight.  I believe they are actually in love but deny they are though they both know it's not casual between them.

Our Feature is Magic Of Words

When did you start blogging?

Hi everyone! I’m Amie from Magic Of Words I started book blogging back in April 2012 but it was set private until April 2013. I was shy and didn’t have much time to participate in the book blogging community so I kept the blog personal.

What is your favorite part of book blogging?

My favorite part of book blogging would probably being a part of this wonderful community. I love getting to meet/connect with my favorite authors, to make new friends who share the same interests as me and to talk to publishers.

What type of books do you mainly blog about?

I read and review mostly YA books and occasionally some Middle Grade/New Adult books.

What is your favorite book(s)?

Ooh this is a hard one since there are so many. I think I’d have to go with my current favs which are These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner, Where the Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller and Just One Day by Gayle Forman.

What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

First of all, it gave me the courage to interact with my favorite authors (when they tweet me, I swear I thought my heart just stopped). Second I’m super thrilled every time I see someone actually read my post and comment on it. Third when people ask me for book recommendation, I don’t know but I feel really happy about that.

Question of the Week: Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! What books did Santa stuff your stocking with this holiday season? Do a holiday book haul for us! If you don’t celebrate just show off your books that you got this week. Pictures!!!

I didn't receive any books for Christmas but here is my stash that I got last week:

The Midwife's Tale: A Mystery Paperback

In the tradition of Arianna Franklin and C. J. Sansom comes Samuel Thomas’s remarkable debut, The Midwife’s Tale.

It is 1644, and Parliament’s armies have risen against the King and laid siege to the city of York. Even as the city suffers at the rebels’ hands, midwife Bridget Hodgson becomes embroiled in a different sort of rebellion. One of Bridget’s friends, Esther Cooper, has been convicted of murdering her husband and sentenced to be burnt alive. Convinced that her friend is innocent, Bridget sets out to find the real killer.

Bridget joins forces with Martha Hawkins, a servant who’s far more skilled with a knife than any respectable woman ought to be. To save Esther from the stake, they must dodge rebel artillery, confront a murderous figure from Martha’s past, and capture a brutal killer who will stop at nothing to cover his tracks. The investigation takes Bridget and Martha from the homes of the city’s most powerful families to the alleyways of its poorest neighborhoods. As they delve into the life of Esther’s murdered husband, they discover that his ostentatious Puritanism hid a deeply sinister secret life, and that far too often tyranny and treason go hand in hand.

Reaver (Demonica Series) Mass Market Paperback

The Demonica series returns

WARRIOR OF HEAVEN

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels - and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell - he's agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

ANGEL OF HELL

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she's doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan's lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld's darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape - her newfound thirst for an angel's blood.

Excerpt

“R-Reaver?”

Reaver held Harvester’s frail body tight against his as he navigated the final steps of a winding ledge that dropped them into a world of weird. “It’s me. It’s okay. We’re safe.”

Relatively safe, anyway. Relative meaning that they weren’t dead. Yet. He just hoped the same could be said for Tavin, Matt, and Calder. When he’d left them to sneak into Satan’s realm, they’d been engaged in a battle they’d initiated as a diversion. It had been a risky move, and Reaver could only pray they’d make it to the rendezvous point.

A hunter’s horn sounded in the distance and was answered by another, closer horn signal. Satan’s minions hadn’t gained ground, but they were spreading out. Damn.

He scanned the landscape of thorny plants, hills of blackened earth and trees, and twisted, abandoned structures. Nothing moved.

He looked down at Harvester, and as before when he first saw her hanging over a pit of acid, he felt sick to his stomach. He didn’t like Harvester even though he was grateful for the things she’d done, but she didn’t deserve this; her naked body too thin and mottled with bruises and ligature marks, her once silken black hair tangled and dull, and worst of all, missing her gorgeous green eyes.

Under ideal circumstances, an angel could heal from even the most heinous injuries within hours. But these were far from ideal circumstances, and Harvester’s source of power, her wings, had been severed. Without wings or medical assistance, it could take weeks, even months, for an angel’s body to fully heal.

“I can’t risk healing you more than I did,” he said. “My power isn’t reliable right now, and I could do more harm than good.”

“Reaver,” she croaked, as if he hadn’t spoken. “Why… how…”

“Shh.” He tucked her face into his chest, quieting her. “We’re going to meet up with some friends, and then I’ll answer all your questions.”

Reaver and the assassins had worked out a plan A and a plan B. Plan A had been shot to hell when iron gates had prevented Reaver from getting out of Satan’s realm to the south, where his companions would have been waiting. Now, with demons in pursuit, they were on their way to plan B. Hopefully Tav, Matt, and Calder had realized quickly that Reaver’s escape route had gone bad.

Inhaling the stench of rotten vegetation that permeated this section of Sheoul, he started away from the skeletons of some burned-out buildings and toward a mountain range as expansive as the Rockies. He moved swiftly, outrunning the sounds of pursuit and pausing once to blast a group of imps with a ball of lightning. The sphere struck the leader, and from there sent electrical strikes at each of the surrounding imps, frying them all in a handy eight-for-one.

Harvester slept in his arms, barely stirring when he stopped to listen for anyone following them. By the time they neared the plan B meeting site, Reaver was sure they’d lost the demons — temporarily. Reaver wasn’t naive enough to think they were off the hook. The demons chasing them were only the first wave, the security detail unlucky enough to be guarding the dungeon Harvester was kept in.

Once Satan got wind of this, if he hadn’t already, Reaver and Harvester were going to have legions of minions on their heels.

I've finished "Damned If You do" the 12th book in his Jesse Stone series by Robert B. Parker.

Police Chief Jesse Stone returns in another outstanding entry in the New York Times-bestselling series.

The woman on the bed was barely out of her teens. She wasn’t exactly beautiful, but she’d tried to make the most of her looks. And now, alone in a seedy beachfront motel, she was dead.

Paradise Police Chief Jesse Stone doesn’t know her name. Whoever she is, she didn’t deserve to die.

Jesse starts digging, only to find himself caught in the cross hairs of a bitter turf war between two ruthless pimps. And more blood will spill before it’s over.

My Review:

This manga deals with psychological matters that involves the 7 deadly sins.  Hiro was in love with a friend who is dating his older brother.  He was going to let her know how he felt after telling his brother their date is an hour later.  Now he has to overcome the guilt his brother died in an accident.  When he wakes up from his flashback he finds himself handcuffed and with a mask over his head.  He manages to break free and go down a corridor and finds other teenagers with masks over their heads and they are locked up.

While in this room he learns the true nature of the Judge Game only four survivors will live and every hour everyone has to choose someone as sacrifice to die by a majority of votes.  Hiro doesn't believe that anyone has to die and the solution is to vote for themselves and someone will be looking for them soon.

This is a very satisfying psychological murder mystery and it keeps you guessing who the actual killer is among the survivors and who is running the show.
