Cozy Review: Theft by Chocolate [Paperback]

I've finished "Theft by Chocolate" by Luba Lesychyn.

Product Description

Mystery, Mayans and Mayhem: looking for chocolate, love and an international art thief in all the wrong places. Chocolate addict Kalena Boyko wasn’t prepared for this. Heading to work at Canada’s largest museum as an administrator, she hoped for quiet and uninterrupted access to her secret chocolate stash.

Instead she’s assigned to manage the high-profile Treasures of the Maya exhibition with her loathed former boss Richard Pritchard. With no warning, her life is turned inside out and propelled into warp speed as she stumbles across an insider plot that could jeopardize the exhibit and the reputation of the museum. After hearing about a recent botched theft at the museum and an unsolved jewel heist in the past from security guard and amateur sleuth Marco Zeffirelli, Kalena becomes suspicious of Richard and is convinced he’s planning to sabotage the Treasures of the Maya exhibition. Her suspicions, and the appearance of the mysterious but charming Geoffrey Ogden from the London office, don’t help her concentration. The Treasures of the Maya seem cursed as problem after problem arises, including the disappearance of a key artefact - the world’s oldest piece of chocolate ...

About the Author

Soon after finishing her graduate studies in history, Luba landed on the doorstep of Canada’s largest museum, the Royal Ontario Museum where she worked for more than 20 years. Moving from positions in the education and programs departments to the museum’s consulting branch, she concluded her career in the office that managed the museum’s recent controversial architectural renovation. After leaving the museum, Luba worked for several years in an administrative and research capacity for a private museum consulting firm with offices in Toronto and London. She currently works in the educational sector and teaches yoga in her home town of Toronto. Theft by Chocolate is Luba’s debut novel though she has been amusing people with her writing since the age of eight. Her love of chocolate precedes this age and she has been in and out of chocolate rehab for most of her adult life. When not writing or looking for her next chocolate fix, Luba can be found in dance classes, trekking to remote waterfalls in the mountain rain forest in Puerto Rico, running through the streets of Paris or any other number of calorie-burning activities that help offset her chocolate intake.

My Review:

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy a funny well written cozy mystery with a likeable heroine who is a chocoholic.

Chocoholic administrator Kalena Boyko is headed to work at one of Canada's largest museum hoping to have an interrupted quiet and unlimited access to her secret chocolate stash.

Instead she is assigned to work with Richard Pritchard her former boss to manage the high profile Treasures of the Maya exhibit.  One day she stumbles onto an insider plot that will jeopardize the exhibit and the museum's reputation.  She becomes suspicious of Richard and that he is planning to sabotage the Treasures of Maya exhibit after learning about an attempted theft at the museum and a jewel heist from security guard Marco Zeffirelli.

I really enjoyed reading the description of Toronto and London and it made you feel like you were right there with Kalena and crew.  Both Kalena and I have an obsession with chocolate and I found some that I need to try out after reading this book.   I also enjoyed the love triangle between Kalena, Marco and Geoffey.

I hope there are future books with Kalena and crew!

You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Now to make this FF interesting we do a FEATURE blogger. When did you start blogging?

I started only about a month and a half ago. I’ve wanted to start up a blog for a good while but was always too chicken to finally break down and create one! I’m super excited I decided to though, I love it!

What is your favorite part of book blogging?

I love so many things about book blogging! I really enjoy being able to get my opinion out there and having the chance to either gush or rant on books! Also, the people! Everyone is seriously so nice, it’s incredible. I’ve met so many nice new friends that I already love to death.
What is your favorite book(s)?

I have so many favorites. I think my favorite stand alone books though... would have to be The Host by Stephenie Meyer and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green- definitely, and my more recent favorite is Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire. I am so obsessed with Richelle Mead’s books so her VA series and Bloodlines spin off series are definitely my favorite, but I also adore Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Powers trilogy!

What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging? Oh jeez, theres so many! I hate repeating answers, but like I said for my favorite parts of book blogging - I’m able to get my opinion out there and meet amazing new people! I’ve also discovered books that I would never have heard of before if I hadn’t decided to start book blogging. And of course, I get to share my (undying) love for books with people who share the same interests as I do, I couldn’t really do that with my friends in real life.

Nette's Bookshelf Reviews

1. When did you start blogging?

I started blogging about a year ago, I started with a personal blog about my kids and my crazy life.

2. What is your favorite part of book blogging?

Discovering new authors and books. I rely on other bloggers for recommendations for great reads!

3. What is your favorite book(s)?

This is a tough one, I have many favorites, but today I'll say The Darkest Surrender by Gena Showalter. This book is freaking hilarious! I love the harpies!

4. What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

The best thing that's happened to me since book blogging ... I get to expand my reading. The world of books is huge- a lot bigger than Barnes & Noble-and I'm enjoying everything that I'm learning about indie authors, books and the book blogging community. I'm soooo happy I decided to go for it!

Q: Best cover? What is the best cover of a book that you've read and loved?

The best cover of a book I've read and loved is "Dance with the Devil" the 3rd book in her Darkhunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

1.  Roarke from the Eve Dallas series would be a must because he would be in charge of the food and barbequing it since he has fine taste and good quality.

2.  Zsadist from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series because I would love to see him in action (um hm get your mind out of the gutter, LOL!) mixing drinks.

3.  Zarek from the Darkhunter series because I would love to see him entertain everybody with his moves (um hm get your minds out of the gutter again, LOL).

MT Review: The Sleeping and the Dead: A Mystery (Jackie Lyons) [Hardcover]

I've finished "The Sleeping and the Dead" the 1st book in his Jackie Lyons series by Jeff Crook.

A new mystery series starring a Memphis crime scene photographer with ghostly assistance

Jackie Lyons is a former vice detective with the Memphis Police Department who is trying to put her life back together: her husband has sent divorce papers, she's broke, and needs a place to live. But a failed marriage, unemployment, and most recently a fire in her apartment aren’t her only problems: she also sees ghosts.

Since Jackie left the force, she’s been making ends meet by photographing crime scenes for her old friends on the force, and for the occasional collector. When she is called to the murder scene of the Playhouse Killer's latest victim, she starts seeing crime scenes from a different perspective-- her new camera captures images of ghosts. As her new camera brings her occasional ghostly visitors into sharper relief, it also points her toward clues the ex-detective in her won’t let go: did the man she has just started dating kill his wife? Is the Playhouse Killer someone she knows?

As Jackie works to separate natural from supernatural, friend from foe, and light from dark, the spirit world and her own difficult past become the only things she can depend on to solve the case.
About the Author

A technical writer/editor for the U.S. Postal Service, JEFF CROOK is also the author of several fantasy books in the Dragonlance series including Conundrum and The Thieves' Guild. He lives in Mississippi with his wife and two sons. This is his first mystery.

My Review:

Jackie Lyons is a former Memphis Vice Detective who is trying to put her life back together (her husband has sent her divorce papers and she's in financial need and in need of a place.  Her biggest problem is she sees ghosts since childhood which she shares with her older brother and her drug addiction which helps her cope with difficult situations (who died at 15).

She is making ends meet by taking photographs at crime scenes for friends still on the force and for occasional collector.  She is called to the crime scene of the Playhouse Killer and she starts seeing the scenes in a different perspective - her camera captures the images of ghosts.

Her sponsor is Sargent Adam McPeak the officer in charge of the Playhouse murder investigation.  Jackie is aware of her compromised situation of selling some crime scene photos to a key player in the investigation Michi Mori a old pervert who has a houseful of nubile young men at his disposal.  She is also dating a man who may or may not have killed his wife.

This was a thrilling murder mystery with a truly disturbing villain, a flawed female character that isn't perfect in any way, very graphic crime scenes with lots of twists and turns and a cat and mouse game that will either in death or victory.

Product Description

When a tense, unexpected battle with an Opast general is cut short, one pair is forced to reconsider their disparate oaths of vengeance and what seeking revenge truly means. And before another battle can get underway, the final Zweilt pair joins the fray at Twilight Hall. Publisher: Yen Press (August 21, 2012)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0316216151
ISBN-13: 978-0316216159

My Review:

I highly recommend this series if you like great characterization, high octave tense fight scenes and true friendships.

This manga series has the best covers I have seen and it comes with the original glossy colorful pictures from the Japanese version.

In this volume Yuki is still recovering from the shock of finding out that Kanata-san is really Reiga Giou.  He can't seem to get over the words Reiga said to him in the last volume.  He's not Kanata and he doesn't go by that name anymore he's Reiga.  As Reiga retreats Yuki falls apart and faints.

Everyone is worried about Yuki especially Luka and comes to check on him often.  We see Kuroto and Senshirou talking about Yuki and Cadenza that they swore revenge on.  Yuki wakes up with and talks to Kuroto and Senshirou and tells them he wants them to live on.

Meanwhile Luka is fighting Elegy and she seems to be losing the battle.  She has a secret weapon though and makes a holograph of past Yuki and threatens her.   Luka hesitates and that seems like his downfall when there appears the present Yuki and points a finger to a butterfly.  Luka realizes this is Elegy's true form and throws a ball of energy at it.  Elegy is seriously hurt and manages to crawl away.  Present Yuki tells Luka that she is part of his memory of past Yuki and Luka tells her he still loves her.  She disappears.

The next day Yuki goes out with Kuroto and Senshirou when he sees the rest of the Zwelts who have come to see him.  Yuki is surprised but happy to see all of them (they were all worried about him).  Yuki, Kuroto and Senshirou go for a walk when Yuki is approached by a strange man in a suit and hat.  Kuroto and Senshirou warn Yuki to get away from the man when Kuroto recognizes the man's voice.  It's Cadenza! Senshirou welds his weapon and Cadenza taunts Kuroto that death scythe welder must be his new partner.  Then there is a very tense and interesting fight scene with Cadenza seeming to be the victor.  Yuki tired and scared of losing his friends and allies uses his God of Light to weld a protective shield around them.  Cadenza uses magic and is about break through the shield when see Reiga appear.

Reiga isn't too happy with Cadenza and says to him he didn't order him to do this.  Cadenza isn't happy and disobeys Reiga who bonds him with chains.  Cadenza breaks free and they start fighting and it looks like Cadenza is going to win when Luka appears.  Cadenza challenges Luka to a fight when another player enters the field it's Luze Luka's younger twin brother.  Cadenza stands down because he doesn't believe he would win against Luka and Luze together.  Reiga retreats and leaves.

We met the last two Zwelts Sairi Kamiki a movie star and Lia Otonashi a singer who have finally come home to Japan.  We find out that Sairi and Necromancer Shinmei Masamune are cousins and that Luka and Sairi don't seem to like each other.

Sairi and Lia are keeping a secret about the last fight which left Lia's previous partner dead, who happens to be her brother.  It seems like it involves Yuki somehow but he has lost his memories of his past life.

I've finished "Backfire" the 16th book in her FBI series by Catherine Coulter.

Product Description

San Francisco Judge Ramsey Hunt, longtime friend to FBI agents Lacey Sherlock and Dillon Savich, is presiding over the trial of Clive and Cindy Cahill – accused in a string of murders – when the proceedings take a radical turn. Federal prosecutor Mickey O'Rourke, known for his relentless style, becomes suddenly tentative in his opening statement, leading Hunt to suspect he’s been threatened – suspicions that are all but confirmed when Hunt is shot in the back.

Savich and Sherlock receive news of the attack as an ominous note is delivered to Savich at the Hoover Building: YOU DESERVE THIS FOR WHAT YOU DID. Security tapes fail to reveal who delivered the tapes. Who is behind the shooting of Judge Ramsey Hunt? Who sent the note to Savich? And what does it all mean? Savich and Sherlock race to San Francisco to find out … watching their backs all the while.

My Review:

In San Francisco Judge Ramsay Hunt is shot in the back after halting a murder trial earlier that day.  A federal prosecutor is missing while his clients are not worried.  Some of the people called in to help are US Federal Marshall Eve Barbieri, SFPD Virginia Trolley, FBI Dillon Savich, his wife Lacey Sherlock, Cheney Stone and even the CIA are called in when Judge Hunt was shot.  Eve, Virginia, Dillon and Lacy are close friends of Judge Hunt and his wife Molly, his daughter Emma and his two twin sons which makes it personal to them.

At the same time, Dillon Savich receives a cryptic note with the words:   YOU DESERVE THIS FOR WHAT YOU DID which sounds like a threat.  When Dillon and Sherlock get a frantic call from Molly asking them to come they rush right away with their five year old son Sean in tow.  Sherlock's parents live in San Fran and volunteer to take care of Sean and they know the Hunt family as well.

FBI agent Harry Christoff is the liason officer assigned to work with Eve and you literally can see the sparks flying from the first moment they meet.  As they investigate further they realize there is two killers involved and that both are very smart, great at disguises and get aways.

Emma has her own subplot being a piano prodigy and Sean's enormous crush on her and his declaration that he is going to marry her.

Backfire is a action packed thrill ride with lots of twist and turns with two very vicious and deadly killers.

If you are new to the FF fun, Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop that expands your blog following by a joint effort between bloggers. Feature & Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, myself of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

First you leave your name here on this post, then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Now to make this FF interesting we do a FEATURE blogger. If you are interested in becoming a Feature click on the drop down link above FEATURES and Features and Follow Friday and get on the waiting list!  It is also required, that if you participate you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee and Alison Can Read) and the two Feature blogs.

Carmen of Book Me!

When did you start blogging?

All the way back in March 2012! I know, I’m practically ancient!

What is your favorite part of book blogging?

Oh my goodness, so many things! I love the memes! Dropping by every week to visit blogging buddies, and meeting new people that are as book crazy as I am! We have a really strong community and aside from the occasional “scandal”, as a whole everyone is really supportive of one another! And yeah, the review copies are kinda sweet, but I don’t think you could do this blogging thing if your heart wasn’t in it! Free books don’t necessarily guarantee a great blog!

What is your favorite book(s)?

Gah! This is such a tough question! Okay, I’m going to limit it to five or we’ll be here all day:

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma (that book almost killed me)
Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Blackbrooke by Emma Silver
Easy by Tammara Webber
And
City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare

What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some really wonderful authors and bloggers through Book Me! There are some fantastic bloggers out there that work really hard at what they do, which is amazing considering what drives them is solely their need to talk about the books they love!

Having to regularly update my blog has really honed my skills and “Voice” as a writer, so that’s been invaluable!

And without the support of Book Me!’s followers, and a very special author I know . . . ahm . . . Emma Silver, I probably never would have had the courage to submit my work to a publishing house. Now I have a short story being published by Crooked Cat Publishing and I’m hoping to finally get my YA series off the ground in the next year!

AwesomeSauce Book Club

1. When did you start blogging?

Amber: I Started the blog in January 2011 and Amber R. jumped on in May 2011.

2. What is your favorite part of book blogging?

Meeting all the other bloggers and talking to authors. We love having a group of people that love reading as much as we do. Plus getting to recommend books to other people and having them fall in love with a book just based on our recommendation is amazingly awesome!

3. What is your favorite book(s)?

This is a toughy, we love so many books. How much time do you have? lol okay okay if we have to pick just a few we'd say anything from Keri Arthur (can't just pick one of her series) Chicagoland Vampire series, Night Huntress series, Morganville Vampire series, Darkest London series, Otherworld series, Highlander series by KMM, Okay we must stop now or else we will just keep going.

4. What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?

There have been a lot of amazing things that have happened due to blogging, but we must say the best thing ever is meeting Rachel Caine and having a few drinks with her. We got to sit there and talk to her and she knew who we were by our blog and it was surreal. If you know us then you know we talk about this moment often. We are still stunned that it happened and will continue talking about it forever!

Q: Worst cover? What is the worst cover of a book that you've read and loved?

I really liked enjoyed reading this book because of the great characters, interesting legend and a psychopathic killer.

About the Author

As a child, Jennifer Haymore traveled the South Pacific with her family on their homebuilt sailboat. The months spent on the sometimes quiet, sometimes raging seas sparked her love of adventure and grand romance. Since then, she's earned degrees in computer science and education and held various jobs ranging from bookselling to teaching inner-city children to acting, but she's never stopped writing.

You can find Jennifer in Southern California trying to talk her husband into yet another trip to England, helping her three children with homework while brainstorming a new five-minute dinner menu, or crouched in a corner of the local bookstore writing her next novel.

My Review:

Eight years ago Meg accidentally fell overboard and her body was never found on her way home to Antigua with her sisters.  Everyone has believed she was lost at sea but we learn she has been held captive by a pirate.

Commander William Langley is on a mission searching for smugglers when he spots a floating vessel.  His crew and him rescue an unconscious women and a very frightened young boy.  Will is stunned when he recognizes the women as his long lost love Meg Donovan who disappeared at sea eight years ago and we learn  the boys name is Jake.

When she finally awakens, Meg explains that she escaped from the Defiant taking Jake with her when her friend the captain's wife recently died. She knows ruthless Jacob Caversham will come after them as he cannot accept such an affront especially in front of his vicious crew; as Jake is his son. Will vows to keep his beloved safe, but Meg refuses to allow either of the two males she cherishes to come to harm from vicious Caversham.

This book was nicely paced with a great hero and heroine and an interesting storyline.  Will was such a great hero because he was honorable, his unwavering love for Meg and his deep respect for her.

Jacob was a very vicious and cruel man and I'm glad he got what was coming to him.

My Review:

This book is full of red herrings and tons of twists and turns which makes it a very intriguing read.  It definitely is a page turner with some truly creepy characters.

It has been two years since Ava Garrison lost her son Noah and everyone believes he drowned.  Ava has always been a confident and take charge women but she broke down and her husband Wyatt committed her in several mental institutes.  Now she has come home at last to Neptune Gate situated on an island with her creepy relatives and servants.  She is the sole owner except for her cousin Jewel-Anne a paraplegic who hasn't sold her share to her.

Ava starts seeing Noah on the dock and hearing his cries coming from his room.  She is even having dreams about him and she even plunges into the ocean after she though she saw him on the dock one day.  She is saved by the new hired hand Austin Dern and her family believes she should be committed once again.  Ava starts to believe that Noah is alive and with Austin's help she starts to uncover clues that someone is trying to make her believe she is crazy.  Then bodies start turning up and they are connected to Ava and she becomes the prime suspect.

Austin seems to have his own hidden agenda and he figures out that Ava is connected.  He is on the search for the elusive mental patient escapee Lester Reece who killed his ex-wife and her best friend.  We find out that he had an affair with the best friend and a lot of women in the area.

Ava is surrounded by enemies which includes her own family and unfaithful husband Wyatt.  Her marriage has dissolved since the night of Noah's disappearance and he's a complete stranger to her.

Her cousin Jewel-Anne has been in a wheelchair since a boating accident has left her paralyze.  As a result, she is quite bitter and vengeful and blames Ava for her predicament.  She listens through peepholes and spies on Ava while creeping around the house.

Khloe was engaged to Ava's brother Kelvin and they use to be best friends until his death from a boating accident.  She used to be Noah's nanny.
